The Republic is decaying! The Federation is falling into hedonism! The State is out of touch and corrupt! The EMPIRE, oh GODS* THE EMPIRE! *(Not that I believe in any of those other, lesser gods, lost souls, and charlatan "spirits")
All background noise to a more immediate problem I seem to have been experiencing of late. Crew Loyalty I'm hoping to find some tips and tricks to garnering more loyalty, and bravery out of my crew, especially in those larger ships of the line: Heavy Assault Cruisers, Battle Cruisers, and Battleships. I tend not to have these problems in the Cruisers and, on rare instances where I actually have assistants, in Frigates I find myself piloting.
A little about me and my crews: I'm a God fearing Lady, with a progressive bent, and less than orthodox grasp on religion. We'll not discuss my view of CONCORD, or the laws of other "sovereign" states other than the Glorious Empire. I've been called some nasty things, and done worse, but I believe in second chances, as I've been given a second, third, fifth and . . oh, I've lost count how many times my predecessor has gone on to see the Lord, and I awake in a clone vat to carry on her name and estates! Because of my belief in another chance (as second seems somewhat hypocritical, no?), I recruit heavily from the pirate organizations I am frequently sent out to subdue in the outskirts of one of the Royal Family Holdings (no bordering of heathens either, no fear of me wishing to traverse the lands of the godless, unless I absolutely must). I draw most abundantly from the Blood Raider Covenant, whose crews tend to be under-trained and misguided. (Wouldn't you choose to join, if the options were join and come aboard, or get kicked out of the airlock to wait for someone else to rescue you? A sizable wing was just destroyed, what are the chances they'll come back for a second taste of death?) I do so (recruit), because I find myself searching through the wrecks of their squadrons most. I'm sure if I took up residence elsewhere to serve and assist others, I would recruit the local independents: Angels, Guristas, Serpentis, but not ever the Sansha, can't trust those damn zombies. I was forced to scuttle a ship, and come back to bathe it in holy and cleansing laser fire, after an Independent Slave got lose and initiated an assimilation code, and she seemed like such a nice engine tech. Maybe I should speak with Izzychan about how to prevent that in the future . . . . I digress, pardon me. There are several advantages to recruiting the independents: lower pay, fewer station and planet side problems, no union fees, and no mandatory benefits (though I provide stellar benefits, through communistic companies of course, none of those theological or capitalistic goons). Best of all, I'm given a chance to guide thousands into God's graces, despite them having lost their ways, or fallen into the darker path of them. Enough background!
On with the problem: of late, I've found teams and portions of the crew running for the escape hatches, or abandoning their posts. Just the other day, I had a warp disruptor team make a dash for the hatches, allowing a Hurricane class Battle Cruiser to escape (we only had 2 hull breaches, and a sleeping quarters spill into the void). The team is for sale, if anyone feels they could make use of them, well trained, highly educated, but not the best suited for hard physical labor, also, they're ex ::cough:: Raiders. I've had repair crews cease their labors, resulting in some close calls, and gunnery crews that just ... leave. I've not suffered any losses yet, but I'd rather not play fast and loose with Madam Luck. If anyone has any ideas on how I could assist these men and women at being braver, and more steadfast, please let me know. If you feel you could do a better job with educating them, let me know as well, I'll gladly sell them for administration fees. Thank you greatly. Letheeth Kayl Ain't no yarrin here!

This answer is very simple really. The reason they serve is money. Not pride or religion, or honor, its cold hard cash. What you want to do is offer bonuses and what not. If a crew stays in their position, offer a bonus. If they do well, offer a bonus. Increase the general pay slightly to draw in more canditates so you have your pick of who you want. basically, make the reward outweight the risk of possibly dying. If they earn a crapload of money if they live, they might be willing to stay on their post a bit longer. Or any other incentive you might have. Being an Amarr I can assume less beatings may be an option? note: The views of Jean Controleur (me) do not represent the views of Placid Reborn in any form or way, and anything Jean Controleur (me) says should not be interpretted to be official policy, ideas, |

Crew Loyalty is a direct function of leadership. You can choose to be domineering and use slaves. Unless you use the latest in mind control drugs, you will live in fear of a revolt. You can also lead through fear, make your crew afraid to be disloyal. This works for some, but your crew will, generally, not be the highest calibre of workers - they don't put up with such behaviour. I choose to lead through trust and respect. I treat my crew well and listen to thier grievances. They know they can trust mem and I them. Now this is not to say that everything is cake and Quafe all the time. I have had crewmembers take advantage of my trust, but then they have to live in fear that I will find them in the future. Not a pleasant way to live. Follow your instinct and training, and most of all for you - Keep your Faith.
