I'm pretty new to Eve, just a little under a month of playtime. But after flying around Eve, going from system to system I noticed something... there's a lot of space out there that has little to no activity. Now i haven't been to 0.0 and my traveling has only taken me to a couple systems as low as 0.2. But even in there it just seems a bit quiet. I've even seen talk about some 0.0 systems being quiet most the time.
Now I understand this is space, and well, space is vast and empty for the most part. And some people enjoy to immerse themselves into the game by way of having a universe that seems never-ending. This is a valid concern actually, but i believe the benefits would outweigh what you would have to give up if you view the game this way.
That aside, what would happen if the Eve universe were to down-size? Say 15 or so percent. Take a system out here and there. Consolidate some Regions. Empty some space out within some systems (not all, leave some to have a larger feel to them). Fill up some of that empty space with the stations, belts, planets and encounters from those areas not getting any traffic.
Wouldn't this help with the talks I hear about how long traveling takes, 30+ jumps and how most just hit auto and go watch TV. How some just can't come to the battle cause they are too far away. Wouldn't this bring people a bit closer together? (livelier local anyone?) Wouldn't this give pirates and anti's more RP opportunities and encounters? Wouldn't this make a better Eve overall?
One problem I see is for haulers. They would loose a bit more Isk since their lively hood is based on how many jumps they have to haul their cargo. But what I hear is most Corps/Alliances have their own Haulers anyway. Also I'm sure there is some problems with POS tactical placement and whatnot, not sure how this all works yet, one of the parts of the game i haven't truly looked into yet.
Now like i said above, I'm new to the game. Regardless, I have been traveling around for a bit, as its my thing to do in most games, I enjoy exploring but it just seems to be that this game has a bit too much deadspace for even the most avid explorers.
So I ask the question, what if Eve Down-sized? What problems and solutions would this bring? Also, is this something that the devs have stated will never happen?

At our last big expansion (two ago now actually, i think) they added a bunch of new regions. If you like crowded and cozy, there are a lot of empire systems with 254397525 belts and 37 stations and 100+ people in local. If you want wilderness, 0.0 and low sec have that. It's one of the things I personally love about Eve is the fact that I feel like I can go to a 'city' full of people and business or I can hang out in a frontier town at a new outpost with 20 people in local and only 100 in the constellation. Mostly, I don't see any reason at all to downsize. Not sure if you're American, but would you suggest we remove Iowa and Nebraska just because between them there's fewer people than there are in Chicago? What would be the point? ------ Pain is weakness leaving the body.

I'll be honest, I think eve could do with actually increasing in size, adding a few more regions, I find some regions even in 0.0 overcrowded

Well it's good to hear that the Eve universe is a bit crowded. With my limited experience out there just traveling around I was hoping it was just bad luck that I haven't ran into a lot of others. Heard people talking about never leaving certain regions after years playing though, such as east, west, etc. and it got me thinking about this idea. Also for a young nublet like myself Eve just seems too huge, after some time I'm sure that will change. Thanks for the first hand knowledge, cheers!

I'd like to see "space" get bigger myself, more dynamic and and more places to go. It's space after all.
Shamless plug: posts seven and eight, in the link below are and idea for "bigger space", as part of a lager, no puns intended, idea.

The scale of Eve is one of its greatest aspects, and not something to be undone.
Empire systems are full of stations and players, living in peaceful safety... in about a 1/4 of the Eve Universe. Another 1/4 of Eve is low sec, danger and money abound with a few people taking their chances. Then there is 0.0, a place where I can fly 30 jumps and only see 3 players along the way, but then once I hit a system with an outpost - BLAM, 30 people in local. 0.0 is a place where people blob together for security, like a hive, so your unlikely to see people there unless the hive is on the move.
