I bought my last ones with from the CCP shop itself. This time I thought it'd be better to get it instantly, so since I'd heard good things about ShatteredCrystal, I ordered through them.
I can't say I have anything good to say about Shattered Crystal. I got a phone call 10 mins after I placed the order. This was to ask some security questions. Then they said I'd receive an email, which I assumed would be my timecode, but instead I received one from TrustWho.com saying that they needed ID. A Government ID style and a Utility Bill to prove address. Sent via Email!
On Friday afternoon (UK), like a fool because I really wanted it, I sent them both (a utility statement and my driving license). I spent Friday evening trying to hear from them, chased again on Saturday morning, to be told that only Managers can view the ID's and they aren't in over the weekend. By this time I'm starting to worry and the realisation that I've sent my ID over the interneet which would be an identity theif's wet dream!
So Monday (today) comes around, I waited till 17:00 UK time so the managers would've had time in USA to get into the office. Then I chased them up. To be told:

My apologies, I had emailed you about your ID you sent in but you must not have received it. We require some form of photo identification. Unfortunately your driving permit does not have one. If you could send in a government issued Photo ID then we can continue verification.
Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience,
Nathan Emerson Manager
TrustWho LLC www.TrustWho.com USA: (503) 252-1169 Canada: (604) 628-2277 United Kingdom: +0442079934727
Now is it me, or wtf does a company need my photo ID for? It's not like I'm there in person so they can check the picture. I would've thought my UK Driving license (non-picture) would've been enough!
So hence my concerns, what a terrible company to deal with.

they do it for YOUR safety, if they can't verify you ARE who you say you are they won't do buisness with you, a photo ID is required in alot of places to verify a credit card purchase
who is to say you aren't someone simply using "your" credentials to commit credit card fraud

You really would have to ask them, I would assume that the phonecall wasn't enough to satisfy their security requirements which hardly makes them identity scammers. But of course that's only a guess from me, you would really need to contact them to get an answer.

Even tough i do my sales via Paypal, i do shop by shattered crystal. The only thing they have done was a phonecall to the phone number listed in my paypal profile. Some random questions were asked, and after that i got the e-mail within a few minutes... _______

Edited by: Canine Fiend on 05/11/2007 18:10:57 Believe it or not, credit card fraud is rampant in the MMO industry. It's a great way to launder money... Buy GTC for cash, sell GTC for isk, sell isk (illegal but people do it) and then you've got clean money.
Shattered crystal (whom I've used multiple times in the past) seems to try and prevent this by making 100% sure that you are who you say you are. Granted I was never asked for any sort of photo ID, but they did call my phone and ask to verify who I was by identifying local landmarks that only people who live in my area would be able to answer without hesitation.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with them, but I know countless people who've used them with no problem. Good luck resolving your issues with them!

I'm willing to bet that they do this because ISK Farmers use GTCs to fund their accounts. Makes it easier to use stolen credit cards and launder money, and prevents CCP from connecting an account to a credit card. ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

Whether or not they are legit you can understand my concern.
Plus still, who on earth asks for photo ID to be sent via email!? That is outrageous.

Shattered Crystal is an official ETC retailer, all of which are listed here. But as they are retailers we don't offer support for them, they have their own support.

Well, it could be that that e-mail is totaly unrelated to shattered crystal, and just a random scam spam e-mail _______

I've used ShatteredCrystal and I was surprised at the lengths they go to to make sure that it's really you ordering the GTC. I was asked several questions that I can only describe as innovative. Shortly after, I received my GTC.
They're not scamming you. Though I think they better prepare you for the interaction with TrustWho. (they didn't do that with me) -- Support fixing the EVE UI

I have been buying most of what I own for the past 10 years online, from retailers around the world, using various payment methods, and I have never ever been asked by a retailer to provide things like that.

Edited by: Saya Hime on 05/11/2007 18:26:56 I'm a heavy user of online shopping, and I've made purchases as high as 8000Ç, and I was never asked for a photo ID. I don't see how it can help them to detect scammers and fraud. What's the advantage of seeing your face? They've got a database with criminal mugshots or what? Plus if you really want to scam, a 30s job under photoshop and voila. You've got a new identity with a new face and a new address.

Edited by: TypoNinja on 05/11/2007 18:50:12 I buy my time codes from them, no issues. Less than half an hour after placing the order, got a phone call. Pretty cool security questions, local land marks, street intersections, stuff only a resident of the area would know. I think its a really innovative way to try and combat credit card fraud.
Had a time code in a follow up email shortly there after, probably less than an hour all told from order to time code.
And that was for my first purchase subsequent ones were much quicker.

so according to that theory they have sellers living where ever their buyers are living?

Edited by: Helen Hunts on 05/11/2007 18:54:23 Shattered Crystal makes the verification call just once. 30 days after your first order, your account gets marked for automatic approval, which makes code delivery happen faster, sometimes faster than the PayPal email. (In the first 30 days, all purchases have to be manually authorized on their end)
Edit: I've been using Shattered Crystal for about 9 million SP now, and have found no problems. Figure it from there. _______________________________

There is absolutely no reason for a copy of your photo ID to be required to purchase a GTC. Find someone else to do business with that aren't so intrusive.
