Eve runs fine on my windows side. When I try it in linux using CCP's new linux client, there's a splash screen and then nothing. When I ran the system test thing it says I fail the 3D accel test. Any ideas on why this would fail on linux but be fine under windows?

Edited by: Lukas Rox on 06/11/2007 13:41:34 You have to have kernel headers installed for this to work. See your distrubtion package list and install the appropriate kernel header package.
For ATI:
go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html choose Linux x86 (for 32 bit cpu) or Linux x86_64 (for 64 bit CPU) choose your card family and then series
(would be Radeon -> ATI Radeon x1600 series in my case)
download the file, chmod it to 755 run the file (should run as root - use sudo for ubuntu or su for other distributions) follow the on-screen instructions
reboot your Xwindow by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
Additional info: The newest ATI driver can work with COMPOSITE extension enabled
For Nvidia:
go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us choose GeForce choose your card series choose the right card then choose Linux 32bit / Linux 64-bit depending on your CPU type optionally, choose the language
(would be GeForce -> GeForce Fx series in my case)
download the file, chmod it to 755 run the file (should be run as root - use sudo for ubuntu or su for other distributions) follow the on-screen instructions
reboot your Xwindow by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
Finally
You should be able to run simple 3d acceleration test, for example glxgears This also enables your card to play videos using XV output in mplayer and you should also be able to use BERYL window manager. --- Visit in game for nice items links http://eve.interkam.pl/eveships

If you're using Ubuntu, check that you're using the "restricted drivers" (ie: unsupported, not functionality restricted). This is particularly important for nvidia cards as there is an alternate (open source) nvidia driver which doesnt' support 3d acceleration to the level that the official nvidia one does. This will save you the effort (and potential pain) of trying to install the correct driver manually. :)
You can check all of this in the restricted drivers manager under "System", "Administration".

If you want to know if you have hardware acceleration type in a terminal window: glxinfo | grep direct
Which will give either direct rendering: No or direct rendering: Yes
Yes means you have hardware accelration.
glxgears will run with or without hardware acceleration

Your graphics card is unfortunately not supported, minimum requirements need an nVidia 6600 or better to run. Additionally Intel graphics cards less than the Intel GMA950 do not support T&L and can thus not run EVE without problems. Intel have released drivers that emulate T&L using the CPU but it's been known not to work well.

Thank you for your quick reply, thou i am kinda sad to hear that i cant run eve under linux when i can run eve under windows xp on the exact same machine
should there be a workaround for the missing T&L then I would be more than happy to give it a try before i have to give up and pop the windows xp install disk back in

If we find a workaround we'll post it, we want as many players to the game as we can get ( of course :) If you find a workaround it would be great if you could post it to our "unsupported" thread we are working on ( post date not know, may be next week or 2 years from now :)

I am also having problems getting the Linux client to work. When I start EVE I get the splash screen, then it disappears and then I'm left with only a black box (like how WINE acts when you don't have the Ariel font in the right place).
Now I'm getting conflicting information about the video card requirements. On the Requirements page link to by the Client Download page and the Penguins in Space Devblog, it says that the Linux client's video card requirement is, "64 MB GeForce FX class card or better"
But I am also seeing in other parts of the website, that the actual minimum required video card is an nVidia 6600 (can't find the pages/post ATM). But I guess what I'm asking is am I wasting my time trying to troubleshoot this black-screen on my nVidia FX5600 card or is it possible for this client to work with cards below the 6600?
I ran the system tests in the EVE Configuration program and they all passed. I double-check that I have all the required dependent packages listed on the requirements page for Ubuntu (I'm still running Fiesty).
Here is how the configuration utility detects my system: Quote:
cpu: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ cpu_ghz: 2.0 memory: 1011 videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation videocard_type: GeForce FX 5600/AGP/SSE2/3DNOW! videocard_ram: 256 agp_aperture_size: 92 videocard_driver_version: 2.1.0 NVIDIA 97.55 soundcard: Chaintech AV-710 at 0x9000, irq 2 soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.13 machine_bitness: 32 kernel: 2.6.20-16-generic x_version: Xorg Version 7.2.0 distro: Debian 4.0 GUI version: eve-000062
Also, when I start the client using the command prompt, I get the following messages:
Quote: Single-user install... This is the update checker... Running /home/leecifer/.cedega/.updater/cedega_updater.py /home/leecifer/.cedega/.updater/gddb.py:26: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser Running... /home/leecifer/.cedega/.ui/runGUI /home/leecifer/.cedega/.ui/gddb.py:24: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser
I'm not sure if those python errors are game breaking, but I'm including them just in case. Also the version of Python I have installed (according to the command: python --version) is, "Python 2.5.1"
So that is where I'm sitting. I'm not sure if I should just order a video card or keep troubleshooting this because it is not clear what the video card requirements are and I'm not sure the next troubleshooting steps I should take if my video card will work.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanx guys.

Have you installed Ithe 32libs for your distro? if you haven't you will have problems running EVE.

What 32libs are those ? I"m on Ubuntu 7.10 with a 6600 GT card, and my EVE client dies on the splashscreen too. It isn't the ALSA audio, I'm on OSS. The common thread (for people with supported video cards) seems to be Ubuntu.

I'm running ubuntu 7.10 with a 6600 GT as well. I was getting the same problem until I used Envy to install an nvidia driver and then went into Restricted Drivers Manager and enabled the nvidia driver. Also after using Envy to install it you will have a system tool called Nvidia Settings.

Severus James posted a solution that resolved my black-screen problem, and that was to simply switch from ALSA to OSS for sound. After I did that, the client fired right up.
Thanks James!!

I'm also stuck on the Splash and Crash using the wrapped client. My system specs are:
Quote: cpu: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2500+ cpu_ghz: 1.84 memory: 1519 videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation videocard_type: GeForce 6800 GS/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! videocard_ram: 256 agp_aperture_size: 92 videocard_driver_version: 2.1.1 NVIDIA 100.14.19 soundcard: VIA 8235 with ALC650F at 0xe400, irq 2 soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.14 machine_bitness: 32 kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic x_version: Xorg Version 1.3.0 distro: Debian lenny/sid GUI version: eve-000062
I'm running a fairly new install of Ubuntu 7.10 using the NVIDIA Restricted Drivers. I pass all the tests in the configuration utility and have tried using both ALSA and OSS as the sound driver.
Now, I already have EVE running under WINE with no problems at this point, and was hoping to get the "official" version of the client working. I have all the dependencies listed in the installation guide. Well if "ibc6" is supposed to be "libc6" which I highly suspect :v:
I'm not sure if this actually means anything, but when I run eve from the command line I get:
Quote: $ eve Single-user install... This is the update checker... Running /home/XXXXXX/.cedega/.updater/cedega_updater.py /home/XXXXXX/.cedega/.updater/gddb.py:26: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser Running... /home/XXXXXX/.cedega/.ui/runGUI /home/XXXXXX/.cedega/.ui/gddb.py:24: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser
After I get back to the command prompt the EVE spash screen loads, and after 10 seconds or so disappears and then all eve related process die.
Additionally the output from glxinfo | grep direct is direct rendering: Yes.
fake edit:
While looking at the log file from the debug output, I'm getting this as an error:

...same problem...
I've been trying since Tuesday to get the wrapped (supported) EvEOnline-linux to work. And now my skill training has run out
Ubuntu 7.04 upgraded today to 7.10 and still no joy.
Didn't expect to find hope in a thread talking about graphics card not working. My graphics card IS working. Yes Booner, I have an Athlon processor too:
cpu: AMD Athlon(tm) cpu_ghz: 1.74 memory: 2027 videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation videocard_type: GeForce 7600 GS/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! videocard_ram: 256 agp_aperture_size: 44 videocard_driver_version: 2.1.0 NVIDIA 96.39 soundcard: C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6 (model 55) at 0xd400, irq 2 soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.14 machine_bitness: 32 kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic x_version: Xorg Version 1.3.0 distro: Debian lenny/sid GUI version: eve-000062
Please post solution where it can be easily found
