Jumped in game real quick to switch skills so I don't lose 3 hours and I noticed by each skill a number ranging from 1-5.
What are these numbers? Only thought that came across my mind was like a skill level or something. Like missile op was 1, standard missile was 2, and some of the missile supports were 4's and so forth.

Was this number per chance in parenthesis? If so, it's the rank number. The higher the rank number the more skill points it requires to level up.

Rank 2 skills take twice as long to train than rank 1 skills. Rank 3 skills take three times as long to train than rank 1 skills. Rank 4 skills take four times as long to train than rank 1 skills.
etc. etc.

Possibly. Like I said, i didn't get much of a chance to look at it, just noticed them by the skill name.
Was this just introduced in yesterdays patch?

They've been there for a long time, interesting that you just noticed them o_0 As said, it's the skill rank, the higher the number the longer the train time. ------------------------------ ~ AKA Josh ~ - Battleclinic Staff Developer - ------------------------------

Koo, that's all I needed. Guess I just haven't been too observant in the skill selection box.

Micheal,
Ignore the flames. I completely did the tutorial back when I started playing and I don't recall it going over the rank on skills. I actually found out about it months later as well.
Coincidentally, I don't know what the top skill rank is but I've seen some being as high as rank 13 .

Top ranked skill is rank 16, which is Racial Titan, I believe.

Yeah so far I've found battlecruisers 6 which will take 24 days for level 5 skill training.
I'm guessing the flamer was thinking I was talking about the little flashy boxes cause I don't remember seeing these ranks in the tutorial either. Course I dont remember seeing them till yesterday either

Yeah, they've been there since I started, so at least for several months, though I'm sure they were there before that as others have said. I'm not recalling it was in the tutorials; I think I learned what it meant here on the forums. Although, you both could be right, because maybe a while back, in earlier tutorials, it was mentioned. /me shrugs.
One thing I have noticed change, though. If you right-click a skill in training, you used to get an option that said "Abort Training". Now it says "Pause Training". It does the same thing, but now it's more user friendly.

Yeah I notice the pause training instead of abort training the other day too. I had to abort training earlier in the week to put on a +4 wisdom enhancement then realized I needed cybernetics 4 (NTS-check required skills first). I finished up cyber 4 last night which of course is after the patch and I needed to pause training before I could put the implant in.

No its not mentioned in the tutorial as far as I can remember.
EVE can be very confusing to new players so its understandable.
First skill I trained was defender missiles to level 3 coz it sounded usefull lol

Who the what now?... , you mean Willpower perchance? (Wisdom in EvE is game client independent, and usually comes boxed with the users original packaging. Although some people loose theres in the shipping, or under the sofa)
Biggest rank for a skill you'll no doubt have to face is 8 for Battleships and one or two of the support skills, unless you decide to go for capitals and up. Also id say they changed the "abort" to "pause" since there'd be small minds that would think it meant they'd loose all there skill points for that level of the skill they where training should they choose to abort and start training some other skill instead. Even with that whole big pop up stating you wont loose any SP every ime you choose to abort training.
My bad. I meant memory. Been playing rpg's for too long, used to intelligence and wisdom.

Not a flame, just a friendly reminder:
Don't bother naming the Rank for any skill when talking with people ingame. All that matters is what level you have it at, since the rank is only an indicator of difficulty (which you know by now). Most new people confuse rank and level of a skill, because they think it matters (which is why someone say they have Battlecruisers 6 and that is impossible ), but it really doesn't. Focus on the level, ignore the rank, enjoy the game

Rank is only an indicator to you how long it will take to train, which you now know. Any other player in-game you talk to will have access to that information if the think Rank matters. Level is the unknown they don't have! :)
/me thinks this should be in the tutorial somewhere.

Or the ability to right-click a "what's this" button on said number.
