(applies for some other branches as well) When scrolling with in IE you hear some odd noise comming form your machine. Its your video card, and a solution has bin found for IE only, by disableing smooth scrolling with in the IE options.
Never the less, a similar sound (louder) I'm having when I'm playing Eve. NoDoubt this might be related to the problem already know, and only minor work arounds have bin found. But noting so far for Eve. What happens to be generating the sound 24/7 when fully logged in, not just a scrolling issue.
I have had a GeForce 4 Ti 4200, and well, same noise only very fain't. Often it got swolled in the background noise. I upgraded to a new card, FX 5950 Ultra (Asus V9980) and the same noise is there only 10x times stronger. And its becoming hard to ignor.
Specially, because its now also gets generated over the sound card and comming from my speakers. No its not a sound card issue, tried it on a whole differed machne similar result and two totaly differend machine setups.
I'm wondering how many other fellow Eve-players have this problem and if the have found a work around. And of course, are the Dev's aware of this issue...
(edit) The sound appears and stay's when you have multiple windows opended. 3 windows chat, hanger and ship hanger trigger it for me. Might be more for others or less. Unknown to me. (/edit)

I've been informed that the noises when scrolling are the capacitors on the GFX Card squealing as the current passes through them.
No idea if thats what it is, but its a known nVidia trait.

Thats correct, but some thing, is triggering it. that it can be evaded by disabling smooth mouse scrolling with in IE should point out to some thing... hardware is controlled by software... ______________ System spec's: Windows XP Professional AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz Memory: 1536MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b NVIDIA GeForce4 FX 5950 Ultra 256.0 MB at 1280*1024 IIYAMA MA203DT Monitor Max Res: 1920,1440 SB Audigy Audio |

Edited by: Xavier Arron on 10/03/2004 10:00:18 I had a GF5900 and had the same problems. I found that it was effected by refresh rate.
Try running a demo or something in very low res so that you achieve very high refresh rates.
Try one of the small demos in the DirectX 9 SDK if you have it.
lol - at 5000+ fps it squeals like a pig.
Anyhow it was very annoying and peeps were reporting varying noise levels. I paid uber money when it first came out and i was not happy. I sent mine back for a ATi 9800 pro.
Best computer purchase i ever made, 9800pro kicks ass :)

I get a similar noise coming from my speakers whenever I scroll in IE. I disabled the smooth scrolling and the high pitched part of the sound has gone away, although the lower frequency part remains. This is much much quieter though, so much less of a problem.
The only thing is.... I have an ATI card, so the problem is not exclusive to Nvidia.
Cheers for helping me sort it out though, its been bugging me for a while :)

I'm getting this exact problem as well. I notice a very quite noise when scrolling with Firefox, but the noise in EVE is annoyingly loud, despite having sound disabed in the prefs.ini file.
I'm running an ATI X700. I've got a feeling it might be related to having an on-board sound card, though the nVidia onboard chipsets are supposed to have a good signal to noise ratio. I suppose it could be electromagnetic interference from the graphics card, but if so, thats very shoddy design.
Just putting this out there, and hoping someone has a fix...

The root cause of this noise (and other noise such as disc access) is the on-board sound chipset in most motherboards is situated next to the data bus (due to the cramped confines of the motherboard. Thus it picks up a lot of noise from chip to the rear port.
The easiest (and only, as far as I know) solution is to but a separate soundcard. A cheap one wll eliminate the noise, and a slightly more expensive one will provide you with a better level of sound quality anyway.

This might me induction on the cable connecting dvd/cd drive to soundcard. Try muting directinput and cdaudio in your mixer (you might need to make them show up first in advanced tab). -- "Say yes to pron on Concord billboards" campaing. Eve mercenaries portal: http://www.eve-mercs.com |

I notice the noise too. But not in eve. In wow, when I zoom in to the point where my toon is still visible, but transparent. Im using a 7900gt @700/1900. Fortunately (or maybe not, heh) the addition of a much needed 80mm case fan seems to have covered it up quite well :ugh:
