It happens to me (splash screen the crash) if I try to use ALSA sound.
If I change it to OSS, it works (although the sound is not so good).
I have to work out ALSA on my PC, but at least I can play the game.
It is worth a shot, anyway.

I have the same problem with ubuntu 7.10 but switching to oss audio does not help, I tried also disabling audio from prefs.ini. I can start eve on wine 0.9.44 version without audio.

Mitor and Dedlog have Athlon CPU's, as do I.
Booner in this GFX card related threadhas said:
" We believe we have identified the primary issue and are working on a solution.
At this point we believe this problem should only be affecting people with Athlon or Athlon XP processors. If you have another type of processor but are experiencing a similar problem, please post your system information along with the above requested traces. "
So there's hope for some of us but this doesn't help the original poster of this thread.

Got It!
Fix
I installed RedistD3DXOnly.exe into my EVE Online folder and I'm cruising the Universe.
I'm running the game on Cedega 6.0.3 with ubuntu 7.10

The above linked "fix" seems to be only for full users of Cedega 6.0.3 (those paying transgaming).
To pay for Cedega means we're paying transgaming twice, since the wrapped eve-linux client is the result of a contract between TG and CCP where some of our EvE subs are paid to TG to make EvE work on Linux and Mac.
I tried copying the RedistD3DX file from my backup of .cedega into the new .cedega folder in the appropriate place... I got an error message saying my "EvE client installation may have modified, damaged or corrupt files. Please reinstall the game client"
I'm still a paying subscriber to Cedega so it looks like I'll have to download Cedega 6.0.3 and make EvE work as it did before the EvE-linux client release which still appears not to work for some people (me included).
CURRENT STATUS: Wrapped eve-linux client NOT working

That's what did the trick for me as well. It's not pretty, but it works, and it works rather nicely.

I have Ubuntu AND an Athlon CPU. I'm in but unstable, this is how:
Situation was as I stated 2 posts above.
Deleted .cedega Used the search function in Ubuntu 7.10: System -> Admin -> Synaptic Package Manager to make sure all "cedega" related items were removed.
Downloaded Cedega 6.0.2 engine (subscription required) and 6.0.2 to 6.0.3 patch. Installed and patched full Cedega.
Downloaded EvE Windows client. Installed in Cedega with the GDDB EvEOnline settings (drop down menu within Cedega's games installation dialogue).
This resulted in splash and crash... so I did this:
(In Cedega) Tools -> Shortcuts -> Add Browsed to RedistD3DXOnly.exe found in: /home/USERNAME/.cedega/EvEFolder/c_drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE/bin Used Cedega to run this once. Changed the ALSA sound settings from "hw" to "default" and unchecked "MMAP".
Then EvE worked.
This was too unstable to haul for a mining op so I will read around more and see what can be changed to improve things. At least I was able to set a new skill training and tend to the labs.
I still await a CCP <> TG solution to the acknowledged problem had by users of Ubuntu AND Athlon CPU's when trying to play using the wrapped EvE-linux client.

Edited by: Mars Nine on 14/11/2007 12:55:21 I said (up there) that I'd report back if I got things stable. Well I have :)
This is probably only relevant to nVidia GFX owners using Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy".
BRIEF SPEC: nVidia card and Athlon single core CPU (longer spec at end of post) Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy" with Gnome.
SYSTEM FREEZING when: 3D games (including EvE) running browsing graphical websites (I know nowadays there are not many which are not) 3D screen saver running
ACTIONS LEADING TO SOLUTION:
[1] Install Automatix2: http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/ind...t_Installation I don't think anything here actually helped but it did have some nice features and packages. System still freezing.
[2] Install and use Envy: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html This was used to remove and update nVidia drivers and xorg
SYSTEM HAS NOT FROZEN SINCE
(On a side note: This current set-up of Gutsy is most definitely slower than Feisty)
Solidarity,
Mars
SYSTEM SPEC:

Hey, Mars, your method works with CCP's official client, or with Cedega 6.0.3 ?

I am currently testing a patch that fixes (hopefully) this issue.
I used to get this error on our test Ubuntu box, but with the new patch I no get the log in screen.
We are hoping to deploy the patch on tuesday (it just patches the Cedega/Cider engine not the actual game engine). The Linux patch will automatically deploy but it will be a manual patch for the Mac's.
I am writing up the Documentation as I wait for the bulk data.
Will update you all later today with more news.

Hey Guys !
Just few little suggestions for those stuck on the black screen.
I'm running the 32bit version on a core2duo with nvidia GeforceGO7400 on ubuntu Gusty 7.10 I've installed the latest nvidia drivers with ENVY
First of all I suggest you to disable all the fancy effects on your desktop as the game will run much faster. To do so right click on your desktop>change desktop background>Visual effects then click on none and OK.
Second thing I've noticed, I was using BeepMediaPlayer to listen my stupid music in the background and it was crashing systematicly when I was launching EVE, it took me some time to find out this was my problem .
Hope that will help a bit
