Ubuntu Gutsy on an AMD64 2800+ with 1GB RAM and a nvidia 6800.
I get between 18 and 25 FPS in space, when there is no activity outside the station. This is about 1/3rd the framerate for windows.
What tips do you recommend to improve performance?

I have a similar comp spec and a similar problem. I installed the latest Linux drivers for the 6800 card by using Envy. Love that I can now play the game in Linux but my fps are a lot less than in windows so I would welcome the same tips as well plz

New official client is faster for me than wine (though wine speed was just about ok).
But I have some small issues that I didn't have on wine. * Loose keyboard input after switching to other app and back (workaround: press ctrl-shift-alt) * No umlauts (codepage problem) * Standing boxes don't show on chat chars. Green Addressbook square is there and some red boxes at least - but no blue boxes and not sure I get all red. * Doesn't always close properly
NVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS 256 MB on 2 GHz Duo Core 2 with 2GB RAM Laptop Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy), compizfusion active, windowed - other stuff runinng in parallel (Firefox, Rhythmbox, etc..)
In station fps: 45-75 - varies a lot depending on station or whatever. Outside 30+ under normal conditions

8600GS, 2Gb, XP + Fedora 8.
140'ish at 1600x1058 fps under XP in space. 50'ish at 1024x768 fps under F8 in space.
Not quite sure what's going on here, albeit my other installs such as VtM:Bloodlines runs faster in Linux than XP.

First of all, migrate from the internal repo's Nvidia driver to the one provided by Envy (google for Ubuntu Envy), it's the actual, puka, latest Nvidia driver.
Second of all make sure you're running the latest version of Wine; again the one in the official repos might not be the latest (we're currently at 0.49); go to www.winehq.com and bounce in to the download -> ubuntu section to see how to add their repos to your apt list. Once done: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade If upgrade doesn't catch it: sudo apt-get install wine
Next it's time to play with the registry
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal then type regedit [smack return obviously] Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Wine Do you see a folder called "Direct3D" in there somewhere? No? Make a new key. Now in Direct3D you are going to create some string values:
String key to create Value DirectDrawRenderer opengl OffscreenRenderingMode pbuffer UseGLSL enabled VideoMemorySize 256 <or your video ram amount if dif>
These might not be the 'best' settings, but they're what I used and hey... everything from Dark Crusade to HL2:EP2 works fine (so does EVE 15fps in a L4 blockade). However you could also try setting ORM to fbo and see if that improves it, same for DDR which can be set to gdi (but not nod, otherwise Kane appears and eats puppies in your living room).
Right in EVE itself, you feel the need for speed. Audio off. 16bit video, 16bit stencil. Make sure LOD and Dither are on.
Of course, if your using the official Cegeda client then you are, as Cegeda told me regarding getting HL2 working, going to have to fiddle with it on your own.
