Ok ppls...
I REALLY need some good advice for this one.
I have a choice between dual 7950 GTX or dual 8700 Nvidia....
WHICH ONE.
so the 8700 comes ready for DirectX10...while 7950s are super gaming cards..I want pretty graphics..but I also want good performance.
Can't make up my mind...

Single Leadtek 8800 GT 512 memory, beat out 8800 GTS in recent performance tests :) But out of those two I would probably go the 8700 route.

Dual 8800GT. They're slightly faster than the 7950's i think, at about the same price. They'll be out soon.
If you just want a DX10 machine, i'd suggest waiting for the next line of cards from NVidia and Ati.
If you just want a DX10 machine, you bought Vista, and thus you have sold your soul to the devil.

The Radeon HD 3800's should be out this week. The HD 3850 pro looks to be going for around ú123, while the HD 3870 XT for around ú158. They will both support DirectX 10.1 and use less power.

The new ATI cards look quite promising. Hopefully I'll make the jump next generation and go with ATI, been miffed at Nvidia's poor cards for a while now. 3DMark06 results.

My main problem with Radeon cards is that the driver installation routine sucks. Nvidia card drivers and software are MUCH easier to install, whether it's a new machine or not. And I have never yet had the drivers go belly-up with an nVidia, whereas Radeon cards have done so frequently.

lol? Only thing you need to do is plugin your videocard and install the full instalation pack and you're done. I don't see that as being a hard-to-install videocard. Or do the Nvidia cards install themselves?

ah?
steps to install my ati X1600 pro card:
plugin card boot computer install driver reboot done
...don't tell me that the nvidia cards simply install themselves when you buy them, not even needing for you to unplug the old card and slap the new one?
oh and about the drivers, I've been using ATI since the 9600 (arround 2 to 3 years) and I haven't had any problems with drivers, bar a buggy wmv acceleration once, ever. ---

this for a notebook? (only know of the 8700 for notebooks) If so you might want to wait for the 8800m which should be ou somewhere relatively soon Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Forum Moderator ([email protected]) |

also, ATI is crap. My dad has an ATI 512mb PCI-E card, and it doesn't perform as well as my Nvidia 6600GT (128mb AGP). Just a little thought for you there.

Well done you are noob. You fail to mention which card your dad has. And comparing an entire company by 1 product is pretty foolish. Just a little thought for you there.

The dual 8700's run colder and faster then dual 7950's. Much better choice :)

The Nvidia drivers are no better, I've never had so many problems with gfx cards than I have with Nvidia. My 7900gt died on it's arse and the 8600gt fails at dual view with the new drivers. That's why i'm going with the 3870 next.
The Nvidia cards also have poor visual quality with shadowing, plus I get problems with texture flicker too.

tbh after years of seeing both cases, I can say that it really depends of the system config you have.
in some ATI work better, while the opposite happens to others.
the ATI drivers only suck when you factor the fact that CCC needs .NET framework to work, and that sucks tbh. So many people change to ATT instead.
as for NV, one thing that I really enjoyed when I swapped my ol GF3 for an ATI 9600 was how much more stable it was. the GF3 was pretty much bleh in terms of stability and it got worse with each new driver release. once I even had to downgrade the drivers cuz I couldn't make EVE work.
but as I say, it really depends of the system configuration. ---

I just received my 8800GT today. It spanks the pants off of the two 7900GS KO's I had in before.
I just can't wait for the rest of the stuff I ordered now.

I'd really like to setup 2 of those in SLI, but that is an irresponsible way to spend my money tbh...

8800GT 512MB. They're hard to find, and a bit more expensive (IIRC off the top of my head) than the cards your looking for, but they're also the fastest cards available, and the most cost/performance efficient cards ever made. Ever.
And as a rule of thumb, NVidia > ATI. While ATI cards often have great hardware, the fact of the matter is ATI often can't write drivers to save their lives. The very fact that Omega drivers, a totally free third party app, often beat out the offical ones is.. . disturbing...

Even though retailers are charging $20-30 (USD) more than the MSRP, they are still worth it.
Nvidia's partners did not make enough to meet the demand at launch, but they are slowly coming back into stock. Find a site with a good price and get notified when they come back in, this card is worth the $.

Ok fanboi, firstly they arent the fastest cards available, both the GTX and Ultra are faster, and also GT are in very short supply atm so "available" really isnt the right word.
As a a rule of thumb, neither company is better then the other. Both have had great cards in the past and both have utterly sucked. And when it comes to drivers, ATI are the ones with a decent naming scheme "year.month" so 7.10 etc. They release new drivers every month and have made their linux drivers opensource, I'd say they were going in the right direction.

Installing drivers are no problem, have done so many times, the problems are hardware/software orientated. Unfortunately I'm not 'l33t' enough to diagnose the hardware/software and re-write the drivers myself or fix the gxf card with a soldering iron and some sticky tape.
Silly me
