Edited by: Dr Slurm on 13/11/2007 22:15:49 What is Eve-Trader.com? I have been creating an alternate trading/market forum over the last couple of months. The purpose of the site being a place for players to trade and discuss the market. I started down this road when CCP announced that it would be closing these forums. I continued down the same road after they rescinded their announcement.
Why has it taken a couple months to put together a forum? The reason it has taken this long is because I chose to write it from scratch. The site is written in PHP backed by a MySQL database. Many might ask why I wanted to write it from scratch and not just modify an existing board like phpBB. Personally I don't really enjoy reading other people's code. It just doesn't fit into my dyslexic brain that well. Even more so I hate having to modify it. I want to provide extensive functionality that is customized to the way people trade in Eve. To do this I felt it needed to be written from scratch.
I have created an About Page on the website to answer some questions of how it will work.
For now this request is for Alpha Testers. I hope to get a few people experienced in testing websites. I would specifically like someone to test SQL injection. I've made my best effort to secure the site I have created, but I'm also sure I've missed something.
I would also like to find a CSS designer. In all honesty I think my design of the site sucks. I've written the site in such a way that all styling is managed through CSS like it should be. I would also be willing to make any code changes necessary for the designer to create the look that we come up with together. I would of course have the final say in the design and code, but would very open to all ideas.
What happens after testing is done? The simple answer is the site goes live. I know as a web developer the key to any website is getting enough users to gain perpetuity. The odd part about this website is that I would like to make it a public corporation inside Eve. I would like to offer 10,000 shares at 200,000 ISK each for a total NAV of 2,000,000,000 ISK. I feel that 2billion is a rather small sum in the grande scheme of things, but it would be enough to hold over costs until the site attracted enough visitors to make it worth it. The reason I ask for this investment is that I would also like to hire writers for the site and an Editor in Chief. I also plan to use a large portion of this investment for marketing and a membership drive. I'm asking players that are comfortable using this current forum to move to a new board and have to register all over again. To encourage this I would like to offer some rewards. All of this is detailed in the "About Page" link above.
That's great and all but how do you plan to make ISK for the investors? There are two sources of ISK for Eve-Trader.com a classified ad system that charges per unique click and a mechanism to charge people bumping their posts in the Order and Services forums.
The classified ad system is obvious and needs little explanation. These ads are currently only served on the Eve-Trader.com website. The bump charge is a little less obvious. The forums as I have written them now do not send a post back to the top when someone replies to it. This only applies to the special forums where orders are managed. The reason for this is bumping is annoying, unfair, and a hassle to moderate properly. To this end if a person wants their buy/sell/auction/trade bumped to the top they can pay a small fee for the privilege. (minimum 100k ISK) These are the two planned sources of revenue for Eve-Trader.com.

But how will people see my order after its off the first page? I'm currently working on a search engine that will put that to rest. I think giving the user the tools to find what they want is the far better answer.
For now investment is not open and no ISK will be accepted. This post is just looking for alpha testers, a CSS designer, and to explain the questions that would arise from this request. Personally I will be purchasing a stake in this corporation, but not so much that I am the controlling interest.

YES someone took my idea that was posed on this forum mere moments after CCP closed the Market Forums and turned it into reality!! :)
Consider I don't have any coding experiences this was not going to come to life by my hand, kudos to you Dr S.

I believe your thread was the one I read and thought, well, ****, I can do that.
p.s. does mean you want to be a tester?

Apart from thrashing the system looking for exploits what else is expected of a tester?

Since this IS a market forum, I think the correct question is not what we do, but how much we get paid for it =D

Guess that would be something good to be more specific about.
Mainly testers would just be going through the features of the site and making sure that they work and are easy enough to understand and use.
I have this theory as a developer you tend to get numb to the interface that you are creating because you have to go through it so many times when testing. Just because your brain (the developers) accepts the interface doesn't make it good. Problems arise when you give it to actual users who might be less technically inclined then the developer.

I was thinking about that after I made the original post. I would consider providing free or very discounted classifieds to testers. Possibly even a starting balance with the site when it went live.
The lame answer would be you would be rewarded by knowing you contributed to (hopefully) the next new big Eve fan site. I will definitely give all testers and contributors a byline somewhere on the site as a shout out.

I agree, it's always good to have others go through your work and catch things you miss, whether it's code or writing or live interpretive dance (well less so on the last one).
Also as to paying, that was mostly a joke, but the offer is much appreciated. And I'd be glad to mess around with this site for you.

No offense meant, but it needs a UI upgrade, a cleaner web 2.0 kind of look would do nicely with this.

Which is exactly why I'm looking for either a CSS designer or a Graphic Designer. Hell even if someone could come up with a look in Illustrator I could probably copy it into code. As far as graphic design goes I just don't have it.

Detecting whether or not you're vulnerable to basic SQL injection is pretty easy as is preventing. If putting something with a ' in it the relevant field gives you a syntax error, you're vulnerable. Properly escaping single quotes in input, so it doesn't interpret it as an SQL command will do it. There are plenty of helpful websites easily findable out there on exactly how to detect vulnerability, and you know your server software best, so a discussion of that should be available as well. I did a bit of infosec work in a previous life, but I don't know enough programming to be helpful in any kind of implementation of a fix if one is needed. I did some poking on the site to see if I could see straight away if it was, but the messages I was getting were unclear, so don't worry about someone breaking it open without more access than normal Joe Internet.

I have a function that intelligently escapes strings. Any data that comes from an outside source or even possibly comes from outside source gets escaped before it goes into the query. I do know a bit about it. I would just rather find out if my sql queries are vulnerable before the site goes live.
If someone wanted to do serious injection testing I would be willing to provide a schema for the database to them. So long as they agree to keep it to themselves. I wouldn't be worried about it becoming public, but there's no need for it.

Sounds excellent, good work Slurm.
It looks a little 90s right now, sadly, I'm not the one to help with that as my graphic/design skills are poor to say the least.
Love the functionality though. I don't really have the time to give it a good going over atm but I'd probably invest in the corp to help get this off the ground.

Working on those bugs.
I think I have enough testers. I'm pretty sure the small group I have now will be able to over load me.
I'm still looking for someone who does graphic design or even better CSS.
