Things me and my friends have been brainstorming that would add little perks of realism and fun to the universe, without causing lots of new problems.
1. One is parking fees and docking fees for ships. Proportionate to ship mass and if your on missions maybe extra perks like import fees of Exotic Dancers (lol). Now of course this would be super cheap so that even the lowbies could afford it, also, proportionate fees for mass of ships could already balance it from the get go. Again, all for the sake of realism.
2. Maybe break-ins to the corp hanger witch would require a trip to the bounty office to retrieve stolen goods? Seemed more like an annoyance, but the idea here is it's those annoyances of detail that make things more real. Maybe vandalism that could occur on your corp hanger when walkable stations is released?
3. We thought ambient radio chatter while sitting in your ship would be neat. This could change depending on the ship class your in, Indy, Frigate, Battleship, etc, and the context of your situation, Idle at a gate, in combat, or mining.
4. Customization on ships. Maybe a different paint schemes, maybe an extra few prongs on Caldari ships or something. This of course should all be preset templates, just increase the number of ship models there are? (trying to remember why this is so demanding on the server)
5. Other ships parked in the station. Based on the population of the station, X amount of randomly generated ships should be in those adjacent parking spots you see in Galante and Amarr stations I've noticed. Doesn't have to be what they're actually flying, but still an Idea. I feel so lonely in that big open Amarr hanger. Take it a step farther, and have animated Indy's docking and unlocking in the background? Make is a sprite, I don't care, I want a station to look more lively.
6. Ship logs. Maybe like the notepad option, you could log Role-playing logs of your adventures for others to read should your ship aspload. Maybe make those boring 0.0 Gate camps more bearable? =D Maybe it could log what ships you were communicating with, what stations you docked at recently. Just another item to refine for isogen and noxcium, but still cool IMO.
All I can think of ATM. There were more, I will post them when I can think of them. Let me know what you guys think. Can you come up with any additions or problems that would arise from things such as these?

along the lines of 5 -- limited berths at each station. so no more then 50 ships docked at once, force the population to go somewhere other then jita 4-4 now and then.

Well like say you have an office in a minmatar station. Maybe those thugs decide to graffiti your store. if you don't go down and check it now and then, your corp office will look shoddy and vandalized, maybe shy away prospect candidates for your corp? I would vote that a lot of these would be graphic settings available for toggle on/off for those who don't care/want them.

Actually i do like that, maybe you could like offer people to grafiti down your corp hangar for few iskies, like an artwork, and once you can walk in the station with possibility of you making a picture of it/ or like upload it on eve-files as "corp hanger" artwork

Problem with these two ideas is they cross the line between 'realistic and fun/benign' and 'realistic and aggravating'. Realism alone isn't enough reason to include a feature that would serve little purpose except to annoy most people.

What you describe is not so much demanding on the server as it is on the client. Right now, if you have, say, ten Megathrons in the grid EVE simply loads the Megathron model/texture data once and displays it ten times. If everyone on grid had a custom Megathron, EVE would have to load a good deal more into memory to display them. (Disclaimer: I am not a graphics programmer so I may very well be wrong)
Other ideas seem pretty decent.

Agreed. This was more of a shotgun approach method. Random ideas, not all good, not all bad.
As for the ship customize models, I was gonna say maybe limit it to like 5 versions of 1 mega, in your example, and people could choose between 1 of 5 different versions? It would certainly break up the repetitive look of ship types. o.O

If we want realism can we start with the basics, INERTIA. Fluidic space is fun and all but objects in space don't decelerate for no reason.
Linear acceleration now! |

While this is a good idea, I was aiming for perks, not game engine changes. I would love to see this as much as the next person, but I'm looking for little things that should be to hard to add into the game.

1) you can do this with outposts to an extent, although I would definitely favor docking fees based on station use 2) maybe with ambulation, but until then it would be just an annoyance 3) whats this? a reason to get eve voice? a reason to turn on sound? /signed 4) unfortunately this could suck up a lot of resources if you have to load different skins. they are thinking of adding alliance logos to ships which would be cool. 5) this would be excellent. even jita 4-4 on the inside seems as barren as anywhere else. 6) this would be nice as well.

Scratching maybe my second idea about corp hanger break-ins, I thought most of these ideas were pretty solid. I still think the idea to have most of these options toggable so that those who disagree with said ideas, (though I know not why since none affect actual gameplay) could be happy too.
I'm still brainstorming more ideas and will countinue updating this thread until we get a much larger and more solid list. (Who knows, Trinity might be answering these items anyways. =D)

People can already do this on player run stations, but I don't see any real reason to put it onto NPC stations, it would just be a huge pain in the butt. What happens if you run out of money? Then you can't dock, so you can't sell anything, can't get missions, and can't collect ammo. Hmm. Sounds lovely.
Quote: 2. Maybe break-ins to the corp hanger witch would require a trip to the bounty office to retrieve stolen goods?
Realism is not better than fun. This isn't fun, it's annoying.
Quote: 3. We thought ambient radio chatter while sitting in your ship would be neat.
Meh. Maybe. But what would be the point, and there is potential a performance cost as the game decides what exactly you're doing. Otherwise I don't really see a problem with it, although not many would ever hear it as most people have the sound turned off anyway.
Quote: 4. Customization on ships.
I have nothing against this, but it means that there have to be two types of customisation, one for each graphics engine; would create problems for the visual difference between Tech I and Tech II and creates some extra data that the server needs to send to each client: a problem for fleet combat and completely against what CCP have been trying to do with their updates. Not to mention the previously noted problem of the client having to load a lot more different ships/skins than it does now. This was explained at the FanFest as one of the main issues with fleet warpin lag as it is.
Quote: 5. Other ships parked in the station.
This would be nice I guess. I can't see any real problems with this one myself.
Quote: 6. Ship logs.
I have a feeling the database admin wants to have a word with you about this one. Not to mention extra lag being created as they are either created as a ship explodes, or are stored in the cargo hold or something similar and would probably create similar problems to the whole bookmarks in the cargo hold thing. That's an exploit I believe.
These things really don't add much to the game, even in the sense of immersion, and most have problems either in terms of performance or fun. EVE can already be a little boring as it is, it doesn't need anything to make it worse

That would probably end up a little annoying. Things work as they are now for the most part because it's designed around that, although a few issues, especially with bumping, need to be sorted. Even a simple change like this could effect a great many other things, especially in combat.
