Edited by: Daeva Vios on 17/11/2007 13:22:07 No one is voicing their thoughts about the QEN yet.
I am at work, so I don't have the time to digest it right now.
Anyone see anything noteworthy?

Since I tend to stick to this forum and the New Player forum, I tend to look here for threads about the economy.
I was surprised there wasn't a thread here, since this is the Market Discussions forum and all.

Now you're just trolling.

Er...what?
I posted a link to the QEN (just released) and asked for opinions, some guy says "there's plenty of discussion" and links to the first econ devblog thread (released september), I said the thread he linked wasn't the right thread...and I'm trolling?
...are you joking...?

Edited by: Daeva Vios on 17/11/2007 15:30:29 The info provided needs to be cleaned up, that's my overall view. I think the good doctor has to spend more time here (from stuff he has said in the past, I tend to believe he does at least glance over this forum) and read up on the basics of trading in the EVE universe, because it strongly differs from the real world.
All that has been said, though.
I haven't had time to really look over it in-depth (finishing up my shift here in about an hour), but the doctor seems to be really strongly pushing for an adjustment in the NPC price of shuttles. He's only mentioned it twice, but afaik that's more than it's ever been mentioned by any other member of the staff, and I tend to believe he knows what he's talking about.
The demographic information is also really interesting to me. I'd be a lot more interested if it showed distribution of isk between empire, low sec and null sec pilots, corps and alliances. So many people say the money is in null sec, but I haven't found that to be the case, personally.
Basically it leaves me wanting more, but that 'more' might be revealed when I have the time to look over it more thoroughly.

I intentionally didn't make a thread about it because there really was nothing all that noteworthy in it to me. A few "neat" things to see... but I honestly skipped over parts as it seemed quite redundant and not altogether useful.

It will be very nice to have some concrete evidence to point to whenever someone screams about rampant inflation though.
It was also nice to have confirmation on a number of predictions/assumptions I've made or seen here.

well since it was asked i will give my opinion.
I thought that the QEN Q3 report, that was just recently released, was a nice little hodge podge of numbers with a few neat facts.
Like all statistics its meaningless without the right quantifying filters. For example, ill use the following quote for illustrative purposes;
Quote: A snapshot of the status on October 19th, 2007 was used to find out which ship players happen to be in at downtime. We found that 78% of all characters were located in high security areas (security status at 0.5 or higher), 13% were located in low security areas, and 9% were in 0.0 at the time the snapshot was taken. So, the majority were flying in high sec.
So what stops the above information from being "useful"?
- This data doesnt excluded defunct trial accounts
- This data includes untrained alts, such as the sort used for scouting, price checks, or logistical tools
- Being but a single snap shot does not provide enough for any statiscal significance
- Since the snap shot was taken during DT on a Friday, it might only be capturing what the distrubution of pilots is middle of the day on Friday (myself im almost always at a market hub then, other times of the week might find me in low sec or 0.0)
Now while the reasons i gave are in regards to the quote that I used, there are similar problems with almost all of the data presented in the report. Lack of proper "filtering" and context of the presented data. It is something that I made little ranting post about in Dr.E first few threads. It is something that has caused some people to call for Dr.E to play eve, to actually understand what he is talking about. Instead of just juggling numbers without having the experience ingame to actually understand what his data mining really means.
Does this mean that Dr.E's reports are useless?
Yes at the current time, to me and many others like me they are useless. They are just novelty jumbles of numbers, which make pretty reports that the masses can use to jump to all sorts of conclusions of mass hysteria.
Are Dr.E's reports a lost cause?
No they arent, he seems to slowly understanding the mechanics of the game, as evidenced by a response of his in his Q3 thread. Unfortunetly until such time as these reports are properly contextualized and codified into a meaningful way that takes into account the realities of the eve universe, they are just pretty bobbles to bedazzle the natives with.

Daeva,
I hope this explains why for most of the "regulars" of MD that this quarterly report is sort of "meh". If the example that I used for my points wasnted enough, id be more than happy to render the same to any other of the data points that was presented in the report.
