Depends on whether the manufacturer is working in a purely capitalist setting or not.
The Steyr AUG is an Austrian design not Australian.

Yes that was pointed out already and I was corrected thank you. It's a good thing I wrote "I think" implying that I wasn't sure cause I really had no knowledge of that weapon but thanks for reminding me...again

The FN FAL is Belgian, not German. I saw the same program as you on Discovery Civ. (aka "We were bought out by the US military, now here's 8 hours of how great it is to be a US Marine in Iraq; btw, we'll be flashing the number for your local enlistment center every 20 minutes following an inspirational minority scaling a 10 foot sandstone pillar to see a dead marine salute him.")

Too many people have a "favorite" rifle based on flavor of the month tech instead of service history and effectiveness. I still laugh when gun magazine editors talk about how "bad" the M16 is despite so many countries trying to get their hands on them or their excellent effectivenss in combat (but but 1 ex-special forces no-name guy said they were bad!).
Waiting for the first monkey to post how the new Scar is soooo good on paper but has no combat history.
M16 is so desired by a lot of countries because it's very accessible by the US since its easy to manufacture en masse. Also M16 did perform quite horribly in the vietnam theatre since it is a very fragile rifle and a bit of sand in the barrel or trigger would lock it up. -

The main problem was when it was introduced it was said to never need cleaning...
and no, the AK 47 is NOT a better rifle (pre-emptive strike!)... it's woefully inaccurate (doesn't matter if it'll always fire if you cant hit your target) and has a massive recoil that also pushes the rifle off to the left. I really really dont like it, it's ugly as hell and heavy
Now the AK 74 on the other hand...

AK-47 made #1. Most widely produced and used rifle. Most Durable and longest lasting. Accuracy: Average Combat effectiveness: Excellent Innovation: Excellent Handling: Excellent Service length: Very Long
Those points are pretty inaccurate. Its accuracy is pretty horrible, It cant fire the weapon without receiving a a big amount of recoil from the rifle itself, the handeling is pretty poor due to the recoil your spread is very wide with it. Combat effectiveness, alright it 'unjammable' ill leave it there but this gun cant be used on full auto like some other guns can be , it never goes in the same area firing in rapid succession because of its recoil.

The AK really has to be seen in context.
I saw it compared to the Roman gladius somewhere which I thought was a pretty good analogy - The gladius design was all about it's utility for usage by formations of troops.
I figure for large conscript armies it's about optimum. Accuracy is less of a concern because you have more d00ds (who aren't shooting very well anyway because they are n00bs) and the thing not being cleaned very well is more of a concern because your d00ds are n00bs. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

AK 47 might be innacurate, BUT you could drive a tank over it and it would still work. it is very, very, VERY easy to maintain, and the production patterns of it had so many lax on them that if stones had gunpowder on them, the rifle would shoot them. the gun is damn durable, easy to produce and very easy to maintain. Add that to a good firepower provided by the type of ammo used by her, and you know why the AK 47 is considered the eternal rival of the M16, wich is more expensive, it is a notch down in terms of durability, BUT is more accurate due to a more strict production pattern.
all in all AK-47 = M-16 tbh. Altho I like the AK-47 style better. (the HK G3 is damn cool too) ---

L85a1 is so badly made that the hammer catches on plastic in the butt, and english soldiers were apparently holding the plastic up with selotape to prevent the hammer sticking, i've not ever seen this rifle but from people i know and stuff i have read it is apparently the worst modern made rifle out there

Does it matter if the AK-47 is accurate or not? Isn't most smallarms fire surpressive in order to get a larger better co-ordinated strike in place in the first place?
How many fights are won by small arms accuracy over range anyways?
So if it never fails and always is up to the task of keeping the enemy pinned down or detered from engaging, doesn't it then fill its purpose?

In current warzones you have civilians running around all over the place so you can't call in an artillery strike or air... in which case the guy taking headshots at 500 meters will end up doing better than the guy expending a full 30 round magazine on full auto at a 200 meter target and hitting everything EXCEPT the target

My AK-47 came with a muzzle system that reduces the recoil. It's shaped to fire a portion of the gas up keeping the rifle a little more level.
About the only other thing I can think of to reduce the kick is laying on the ground with a bipod.
Doubt either of those would do any good in full auto though.

Well its pretty **** apparently, but thats going a bit far. It IS fragile, has plenty of faults, and has some awkward design features (the right-hand-only thing being a major one). But on the other hand it is far more accurate than an M16, is powerful, and is apparently fairly easy to maintain (luckily, considering how often it jams).
Its a***** up, but I think "worst modern made rifle" might be a bit of a statement. ------

FN FAL FTW!
... because that's what my action man had when I was a kid and I found it in my parents garden a few years back, 30 or so years later!
Real guns? We don't do that so well in England, so my experience is based on
A .22 rifle - target shooting A shotgun - clay pigeon shooting A cork popgun - Brighton pier
Let me near a gun and I'll probably end up doing this to myself!

M107 50 Caliber Rifle
1. Accuracy: Has a rumored 1 inch drop at 2 miles..
2. Combat effectivness: Disables armored vehicles if need be.
3. Innovation: The recoil technology in them is beyond imagination!
4. Handling: A large gun, some having the ability to be taken apart rapidly. So rather mobile.
5. Service length: Implemented not long ago by elite units, will be used for a LONG time.
