4. Handling: A large gun, some having the ability to be taken apart rapidly. So rather mobile.
5. Service length: Implemented not long ago by elite units, will be used for a LONG time.
looks damn good, but I still prefer the Gepard M6 with it's 14.5mm rounds ---

3. Innovation: The recoil technology in them is beyond imagination! A double action muzzle brake that's on most .50cal weapons isn't that amazing
4. Handling: A large gun, some having the ability to be taken apart rapidly. So rather mobile.

Added some 'outside' opinions to your post. Also a .408, .338, or .308 can hit farther then a .50 due to having a higher muzzle velocity; meaning more rangem and less deviation due to wind and distance.

Isn't the new .416 cal. te best for range so far? Saw a thing on it on the military channel, hit a 12" target at 2500 meters

That was a CheyTac M-200 Intervention firing a 305 grain .408 caliber round. Probably one of the best gun/round combinations in the world for long-range shooting. Mines out at the shop for some work atm, or I'd throw up some pictures of it.

I never knew that deer were wearing 10mm plate armour during hunting season; those sneaky bastards.
On a less rediculous note, I'm glad I don't live anywhere near you people. Regardless of how responsible the people in here are, there are much less responsible persons with the same "freedom" to buy anti-vehicular weaponry. Seems slightly (oh, just slightly) absurd.

Since i'm in the Portuguese Army i'm biased towards our good old HK-G3. Its a old model but more efective today becouse of the munition used. The 7.62mm ammo will easely penetrate most body armors at 1000m, combined whit a good marksmen the high acuracy of the gun makes it a deadly combination. Moderatly usefull against lightly armored veicules since we use AP rounds. Easy to mantain and hard to jam or damage... One can actualy past a armored veicule over it and still be combat ready.

Ah, should have noticed the "can" in there. I was picturing a standard issue battle rifle, not an AM weapon. The US wanted to give everyone this abortion of a gun for a while

Originally by: Grimpak polish troops can carry a >20kg rifle that shoots heavy machinegun bullets and have nearly 2/3rds of your size ABOUT FOR ABOUT 10M FROM THE TROOP TRANSPORT.
Fixed! Like the Barret or any other anti-material rifle, they are rarely far from a troop transport or fixed location like a building or outpost. There is only so much weight that a soldier can carry in addition to their combat gear. 30lbs more than an M16 or AK makes ALOT of difference. Due to this most anti-material weapons rarely are taken on patrol and reserved for special need jobs or as stand off weapons. Even special forces except under special circumstances are reluctant to carry the thing due to its weight when an old .308 round will do the job. Save the superman stories for when in the FOB or in an armchair.
Now while the anti-material rifles are big and make loud booms and can cut a person in half...they are fairly ineffective on the battlefield except in the hands of specialists. You dont stalk and snipe in a firefight. You rarely get targets at long ranges with uncluttered fields of fire in urban settings. They are difficult to deploy quickly.
Also, M1A1 was an upgrade for the M1 Garand. Changes only recently made to it in the past few years have been available to the G3 and FN FAL for a while. I'm just not that impressed by it. The only reason it was issued as a DM rifle was because it was medium caliber rifle in our inventories at the time.

Trust me, I hear all sorts of stories about some idiot who went and shot 'insert himself/friend/dog/house/car/plane' while hunting around my house. Luckily for me... All the morons stay at least 5miles away from me b/c well that's where my property lines start.

Not true in Commufornia... I had an AR-15 when I moved here. I fired at the range every day to keep my USMC rifle quals up but nope, it's an "assault" weapon because it has a pistol grip . Though I don't need the handgun safety cert to buy a handgun
