From comparing these two ships, the Vigil seems to be better for the role:
- Vigil is faster than a Rifter (+5% ship velocity per level) - Further lock range (45 km vs Rifter's 22 km) - Cheaper
Of course Rifter has a much higher damage output (4 high slots vs Vigil's 3), but as a tackler in a gang you aren't expected to be a damage dealer.
So why is everyone seems to choose a Rifter over a Vigil for this role? Is damage output so important to a tackler? |

In a pure tackler role the Vigil is a better ship.
However the extra dps from a rifter can be useful if you are in a really small gang. . .. WELP! .. . |

The rifter is (generally) a better PVP ship. The Vigil is much better for a tackling role.

Rifter also has a stronger defense , you can plate it for durability. Vigil is weaker , so it won't last long in web range. If you just want to scramble a target , the slasher is even cheaper and faster.

The vigil can run mwd and disruptor off a small injector. The slasher cannot and will quickly cap out running both.

Vigil: 1mn MWD II, Warp Disruptor II, Sm Cap Booster II 2x OD II, Nano II
-- 5812 m/sec, cap lasts as long as you have cap charges (I get 5400 m/sec out of it)
Slasher: 1mn MWD II, Warp Disruptor II OD II
-- 4843 m/sec, cap lasts 30 sec

fit a small cap battery 2 instead of the booster and it's a winner.
you don't need to run the MWD the whole time, and a ship with 96m3 of cargo isn't much good at hauling cap charges around.

I always love these posts, no matter how crappy the ship and the role, everyone always throws tech 2 gear on and uses unreasonable amounts of CPU and power for anyone who is just starting out ;)
"I have all tech 2 and level 5 skills" "Nice man what ship?" "A Vigil!"

maybe if we're talking about 30 million isk t1 cruisers yeah, but a vigil costs **** all and so does the t2 on that ship.
about 5 mil for a decent tackler is fine imo if the pilot can't fly an inty for whatever reason.

You're probably looking at one of two roles in which the Rifter is a superior tackler.
#1: Close in tackling with web and 7.5km scram. Rifter is a great deal more durable (you can even get a 400mm plate to fit with an MaPC), and thus will survive in this position longer. #2: Small gang where the Rifter's added DPS is really needed.
For pure "getting a point of scramble on", though, the Vigil is superior with higher speed and better sensor characteristics.

You assume that I don't have 4 vigils fit exactly like that in my hanger right now. I seem to remember saying how much *I* get out of it. ;-)
It's a much cheaper hull than a Stiletto, and is quite a bit faster. I wasn't talking out my arse - I've actually *USED* it setup this way.

Injectors on frigates are stupid.
MWD/Disruptor/Small Cap Battery OD/Nano/Cap Power Relay
Permaruns everything I believe. Been a while since I've been tackler in a gang but that does work iirc.
7.5km + web is a death sentence for most frigates even if you go plate + dc.
Tackle from max range while orbitting as fast as possible. Hopefully someone in your gang has a mindlinked claymore so you're Warp Disruptor II has 30 odd km range. Can't remember exact bonus that gives you but its pretty damned useful to be able to tackle outside of Heavy Neut range. . .. WELP! .. . |

The small cap battery is ideal for this, injectors on frigs is a bad idea imho
