Hello Capsuleers,
As many of you are taking the long trek to Iceland in March this year to attend Fanfest 2012 in the Harpa Centre, we wanted to take this opportunity to make a thread giving you information on what to expect at Fanfest and where to eat, drink and be merry in Reykjavik. There is a lot to cover and it is certain that I will be unable to cover everything but I will reserve the second post and update the OP with as much relevant information as possible. Please feel free to ask questions and we will do our very best to get you answers.
Before Fanfest Starts
Fanfest 2012 main page GÇô This page holds the main information listing for Fanfest information including news, events, location, hotel partners and early bird specials.
Currency GÇô The currency in Iceland is the Icelandic Krona. While you can certainly feel free to bring cash, please note that almost every single business will accept a credit or debit card as payment. There are banks at the airport and throughout the city center where you can change currency. The main banks in Iceland are Arion Banki and Landsbankinn with opening hours between 9:30 to 16:00 Monday GÇô Friday. Both of these sites have currency converter calculators for your convenience.
Emergency Services GÇô The number for police, ambulance or fire department is 112. Players who have an unlocked phone can purchase a prepaid sim card from Vodafone during their stay in Iceland. Top ups can be acquired from any 10/11 store which open 24 hours a day.
Weather and Attire GÇô It is often said of March that it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb but this does not always hold true for Iceland. You should prepare for cold weather and strong winds, which amplify the cold ,so a good rainproof jacket and shoes are a must. Last year in March we had several feet of snow fall at the beginning of the month yet the year before that was quite pleasant. All dress for Fanfest, of course, should be casual but feel free to dress up in character if you like.
Getting from the airport to Reykjavik GÇô There are several options for getting from the airport to Reykjavik. You can simply hire a taxi outside of the terminal building and can expect to pay approximately 11,500 Icelandic Krona for a one way trip to Reykjavik. This is a fine option if several of you are sharing the cost.
The cheaper alternative is the Flybus which operates daily from Keflavik airport to the main bus station in town. Depending on your ticket type, the bus service will carry you onward to your final hotel destination. This ticket type is the Flybus +. The return ticket price for Flybus + is 4500 Icelandic Krona.
The final option is to rent a car which is available from Keflavik airport through a website like artic.is or Sad cars. This is a good idea if you are travelling with a group and intend on going out of Reykjavik to tour or see Northern Lights (if they are on show).
Self-catering GÇô If you intend to visit at Fanfest and are staying somewhere with a kitchen and can cook your own food then you may want to consider the following stores and supermarkets
10-11 GÇô Opens 24/7 and sells a lot of the basics like cereal, milk, bread, eggs, meat and various tinned goods. Bonus GÇô One of the biggest supermarket chains offering a lot of brand name goods and pretty much everything you need. Kronan GÇô Like bonus only with more choice.
Some things to look out for in supermakets when you do not know the local language
Milk GÇô Comes in Blue cartons (full fat), Yellow cartons (semi skimmed/low fat) and Purple cartons (long life)
Meats are as follows: Lamb GÇô Lamba Beef GÇô Naut Chicken GÇô Kjuklinga Pork GÇô Gris Bacon - Beikon
Eating and Drinking GÇô LetGÇÖs get to the nitty gritty and to the fun stuff that people want to do GÇô Eat, Drink and Be Merry. Below are a list of places to eat and drink and links, whenever possible, to a menu. Unfortunately they will not all be in English but most should be
Eating out in Reykjavik
Expensive
Fishmarket GÇô This is a very upscale fish restaurant which also features some of the best Sushi in Reykjavik. Grillmarket GÇô Like Fishmarket, Grillmarket is an upscale steakhouse which features some of the best Mojitos you will ever have. Austur GÇô Another steakhouse in the center of town. This restaurant transforms into a club after 22:00 Austur India GÇô This is the premier Indian restaurant in Reykjavik. Menu is quite extensive and the food i... CCP Navigator -Community Manager |

Mid-range
Italia GÇô This is a budget to medium restaurant which serves wonderful pasta and pizza in huge portions. The number 17 consisting of fusilli, chicken, bacon and chili is pretty amazing. Uno GÇô Uno cook fresh pasta in-house along with a variety of meat and fish dishes. Situated on the main plaza in town. Hresso GÇô This bar/caf+¬ has an extensive menu and a daily specials list along with a great dessert menu. There is also free wi-fi. Booyah! Laundromat Caf+¬ GÇô Much like the above only it has a fairly sizeable library of books and board games. Vegamot GÇô A nice restaurant with a good selection of dishes from around the world. The Louisiana chicken strips are wonderful. Islenskibarinn GÇô Another restaurant which offers a lot of traditional Icelandic dishes as well as great burgers and meals in a jar.
Budget
Bullan GÇô One of the best burgers in Iceland served in one of the tiniest outlets in town. If you go in a group of 50, expect a lot of you to stand. The burgers are well worth it. Nonnibiti GÇô If you come to Fanfest and do not get a sub from NonniGÇÖs then you have basically wasted your trip. Some people will tell you that Hlollabatur is better but those people are pretty dumb. Prikid GÇô Home of the Jack Daniels milk shakes and triple burgers. The perfect place for a hangover breakfast/lunch. Nings GÇô Chinese takeaway food. Some people love it and some hate it.
There are plenty more restaurants which fit into the budget categories and I am sure others can fill you in with the details.
Drinking in Reykjavik
Since a bar does not necessarily require a menu I will simply list some of the well-known bars that you may wish to check out or that are popular with Fanfest attendees. Please note that the official drinking age in Iceland is 21.
The English Pub GÇô Very busy pub at weekends with a good crowd of people. Sun GÇô Thursday closes at 01:00 and Fri/Sat stays open to around 3:00/4:00 am Celtic Cross GÇô A pub very much favored by many Fanfest attendees. MandrillGÇÖs Tweet Fleet meet was held here last year and he will be arranging another. Be sure to keep an eye on his blog for updates. Sun GÇô Thursday closes at 01:00 and Fri/Sat stays open to around 3:00/4:00 am Islenskibarinn GÇô Bar/Caf+¬ which is a popular haunt for tourists and Devs alike. Sun GÇô Thursday closes at 01:00 and Fri/Sat stays open to around 3:00/4:00 am. Truno/Barbara GÇô One of the biggest gay hotspots in Reykjavik. This club stays open well into the early hours of the morning at weekends and is a pretty chill place to hang out. Thursday closes at 01:00 and Fri/Sat stays open to around 4:00/6:00 am. Bjarni Fel GÇô The main sports bar in Reykjavik. If you are attending Fanfest and are afraid of missing your favorite football, rugby, cricket, baseball, basketball or soccer game then this is the place to go. 4:00/5:00 am. Naesti Bar GÇô Home of the 3 Mojitos for 3000 Krona offer. Located right by the Celtic Cross. - Thursday closes at 01:00 and Fri/Sat stays open to around 3:00/4:00 am.
Apart from the above list there are a multitude of other bars and clubs around Reykjavik. Generally they will all remain open to 01:00 Sunday GÇô Thursday and much later at the weekends. CCP Navigator -Community Manager |

Hey there Is there a pub where players will be meeting up on the wednesday before the event. I arrive on that day and would like a few beers with fellow players. Cant wait to come, last year was so awesome, I think this year will be even better. |

Checking the hotel lobby and the first random bar you stumble upon has never failed me, there's always a group of players somewhere who are happy to have you along. <3
Still, there's usually a meetup or three on Wednesday, check the forums the night before going and you may find something. If not, then Hresso is usually a safe bet if past experience is anything to go by. |

To be honest you'll probably bump into other attendees before you even board the plane to Keflavik, a non-trivial percentage of people on your flight are likely to be going to Fanfest, especially on the Wednesday.
Failing that, you'll find that pretty much any lobby or bar on Wednesday will have groups of Fanfest attendees in them. You can pretty much go up to any group of people who aren't speaking Icelandic and there's a good chance you've found your first group of Eve players. I'm not aware of any specific venues that have been nominated to get nerdrushed yet though. |

New rare in-game stuffs for those of us who are attending!
Anybody flying in from the US ever have problems checking in early at their hotel in previous years? I'm coming in the day of the Golden Circle tour, and I really want to be checked in before that. I'm assuming an E-mail requesting early check-in will help. |

Schweet! Would be fun (and not entirely unexpected) if the upgraded cargo was a Quafe bay conversion, putting it in line with all the other cool-but-practically-useless novelty ships. I guess we'll just have to wait and see... (just five weeks left... five looong weeks) |

If not, the infamous hot dog stand ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A6jarins_Beztu_Pylsur ) is literally 200 yards from the front door of Harpa. |

We've got a place called The Wienery that's known for its various hot dogs and other stuff. I go there about once a week, as it's a bit of a drive from where I live. I'd definitely go more often if I could. I don't think it's been visited by any presidents though... |

I had good experience with sixt.is for car rental in price last year and used them this year too. Just be at least 20years old and have a EU driving licens, no additional cost/paper. The blue lagoon is located in the middle of your trip to reyjkavik so i suggest doing it when you arrive if you have an rental car (note its expensive) or you can do it with the evecommunity cheaper.
Golden Route trip is in my geeky mind overrated, drove it with some random persons last year. The roads are nice and trafficlight and no roundabouts makes it kinda similar to US.
FYI, tipping is not common in Iceland, they will not be offended if you do. But don't mention the economy
Iceland climate is actually _not cold_, I traveled in only T-shirt last year and walked for over 1 hour in the city without dying. But then again, I'm used to it.
I'l be traveling from norway to iceland 21.st and back 26th. if someone is traveling similar, send me a evemail:)

Actually, I wouldn't mind a schedule. As a first-timer at FanFest, I don't want to miss anything if I can help it.
Man, I can't believe it's only 17 days away. For a while there it was stuck on 'forever until FanFest' but now the days are going by quickly. I just hope time slows down again once I get to Iceland. lol |

First off, if you're paying EUR for tickets instead I highly suggest running some incursions or scamming to pay with PLEX instead. Second, If you've ever been there before you'll find out there's a reason they sell tickets to party to locals.
Looking quickly at those prices, they're only available for thursday and saturday. The price combined (I'm just guessing at the saturday ticket not including the party) is 75 EUR. A full ticket is 95 EUR and includes all 3 days plus the party plus a goodie bag which previously included drink tickets. So what are you whining about? That CCP tries to recoup costs by letting locals in for 2 days to see what they're doing? That CCP sells party-only ticket to somehow tilt the gender balance from abysmal to tolerable?
All music festivals I have worked at have had some deal for the locals to get in cheaper to see bands in exchange for us filling their village of 5,000 with 30,000 drunk idiots so they'll let us come back next year. This is no different

Quick correction (possibly): While my Icelandic is limited to Swedish+guesswork I'm pretty sure the first option is a three day pass - i.e. all of fanfest. Doesn't seem to say anything about the loot we players get though which as you say include drink tickets etc. I don't think the locals get that, which evens it out somewhat. I'm sure someone will analyse the contents of the bag, run the spreadsheets and rage endlessly on the market forum if when he's unhappy with the outcome. It's the EVE way. |
