I'm having extreme trouble not getting blown up in level 1 agent missions. I'd been doing okay for a while with the hit and run to a station to repair but it's getting old now and I just lost my 2nd kestral that I invested 700k isk in and i don't really feel like replacing it anytime soon because I'm sick of dying like I'm nothing. I need a setup that is going to work for a noob with any Caldari ship that would not cost alot. I was using
High x4 Missile Lanuchers
Mid Invuliability Field I Shield Recharger I Small Shield Extender I
Low Quantam Co processer I Reactor Control Unit I
Once 3 or more targets are in range I start getting hit so hard it doesn't even matter. I'm sick of having to warp out in the nick of time, I need to know what i'm doing wrong so i can actually enjoy the combat portion of this game at some point. Please don't suggest something that a person with more the a million can afford. I refuse to spend more then a million unless it's necessary for level 1 missions.

Have you tried fitting a small shield booster instead of your shield recharger? Also Power Diagnostic Systems may work better in your low slots than Reactor Control Units. Apologies if this sounds patronising - but did you remember to activate the Invulnerability field when you warped into the mission?

Core skills help a lot with taking and doing damage.

Yes, I tried a booster but if I have my invulability field on then my capacitor can't handle it drains too fast. I tried out 2 or 3 battles to see what seemed to help me take less damage and in the end I found that a invuliability field was better then the booster. Yes, when I enter 25km of any enemy I activate my invuliability field....I wish the problem was so simple.
I know alot of combat skills are low and I'm uping the shield ones right now, I figure that I can try to make my ship more durable so that I can actually kill a enemy or two before I have to get the hell out of dodge. 5% here or there makes me wonder if in will actually help me that much. I seem totally out classed in every combat.

Without knowing what you have for fitting skills (Engineering, Electronics, Weapons Upgrades, etc) it is hard for us to recommend a setup for you.
I had a special setup that I liked that involved fitting 4x launchers with 2x BCU, along with a decent tank, but that setup required a large budget and a lot of skills, so it is not likely to help you.

Also if it's World's collde that is killing you... well that mission is really hard solo for beginer players, I just decline it.

Ok forgive me I don't have EFT handy at work but essentially I'll recommend a few things.
Hi's look good.
Med's, drop the invuln, shield recharger and extender. Replace it with a shield booster, a passive resistance amp specific to the rats you are fighting and an AB.
Low's, if you still need the co processor keep it(or get more electronics, weapon upgrades etc etc) if not grab a ballistic control unit. The RCU is a bad bad idea on a frigate, PDS is a better option IF you need cap and PG and shields. However if you need just the grid then use a micro aux power core(MAPC) it's a straight +10. If you need just cap use a flux coil(relays kill boost), if you're not sure, toss in an overdrive or nanofiber internal structure(helps you speed tank).
Basically you may want to work on avoiding damage by staying out of range(manual flight helps), and when you do take it you need to be able to recover from it, the invul field and extender would work nice for pvp(sort of) but for missions it doesn't work the battles simply last to long. -=^=- "Someday the world will recognize the genius in my insanity." |

Yeah it is the world's collide mission, I'm going to look over Khan's suggestions and try to put together another kestral. I'm glad to hear this mission is just a really tough one, I was worried that I was using a really screwed up setup or something.
What will happen if I fail to complete the mission? I remember reading that you may not be able to work with that corp again...or agent...I don't remember exactly.

Edited by: Falka Lakadaka on 24/11/2007 08:14:19 It sounds like tactics might be an issue here as well.
It looks like you've got the whole enemy fleet bashing away at you. Or at least more than you'd like.
Fire up your afterburner and fly AWAY from them at high speed. Get yourself to a position where you can dictate how many attack you. There's nothing wrong with flying away fast and attacking at the same time. If they all stop attacking, turn around and fly towards them slowly until one starts targetting you. Then turn around and fly away again (fast or slow - it depends on what you need).
Until you get better skills and a better tank, this can be quite effective. More advanced users use variations on this theme all the time.
One more thing - if the enemy is clumped into little groups - take out one group at a time, this often prevents the other groups attacking at all, until you specifically target them.
Hope this helps - and it won't cost you one single ISK.
PS: If it's Worlds Collide, then this is supposed to be the hardest Level 1 mission of the lot, so just refuse that one for now. After nearly 1000 missions, I'm still waiting to get this one, so I can't really comment on specific tactics for this mission. The above is general advice for any mission.
Cheers Falka

The key to missions is kiting the rats at maximum range.
As for the fittings, I'd go with:
Low: Power Diagnostic Unit, Ballistic Control Unit
Med: Shield Extender, Passive Hardener, Afterburner

This will sound a wee bit crass but try a Merlin instead if you can. They are far more sturdy than a Kestral. I was able to pwn all over Rats in a Merlin with a Shield Booster and some extenders getting me over 1,000 shields. It is a very tanky little frig. +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!

The key to surviving Worlds Collide (Level 1) when you're a new player is to not try fighting in the first room but just hit the afterburner and run to the gate.

Well for World Collide i use a Destroyer as it is classed as a frigate
That is normally more than capable of doing it solo plus Frigate is good to change to salvage barge when you upgrade to Cruiser

I'll look into the Merlin, I'm thinking about getting a destroyer. They are considered frigate class right? I actually pwned the ships in the first area of the mission....they were easy. It's when I went through the gate I had problems, 3 in short ranges when you jump in. You blow up one and 4 more spawn within 30-40km, I make a run for the other gate in the area but I died before I got there. I guess my best bet would be to train afterburners and try and run away and keep them at range because I can't outrun any of them at the moment.
Anyway, I would like to thank you all for your help. I think my problem is i don't even have the utility skills that every combat pilot should have. I never even thought of getting afterburners...not even once.

Go for afterburners....don't make the mistake of going for Microwarp drives for missions.
MWDs might look good as they give you a much better speed boost, but they have some significant drawbacks (cap and sig radius). And to boot - they won't work at all in 99% of missions as they can't be activated in a deadspace.
If you need more speed, train afterburners to Level IV and get a tech II (or find a decent named one).

There's a very simple answer to this: you think you're flying a Gallente ship. Look at the markings - it's Caldari. Caldari do not fly round their opponents in ever decreasing circles, they run away from them.
There are Skills you can train that improve the range of your missiles, one for speed and another for time of flight. You only have to outrange Mr Rat by a few km for the win. Reprocess those Shield modules, you won't take damage unless you warp into a deadspace on top of the bad guys. For that fit an Afterburner so you are faster than Mr Rat and an Inertial Stabilizer to improve your acceleration so you can get out of his range quicker.
These Skills apply to all ships, so they will work for you in all combat.

Yes. The reason you were having problems is that you did what a lot of new people do and dove into the enemy to take them on. I'm losing count of the number of times I've said this or seen it in responses. So don't feel bad.
The key to mission success, at least at the low levels ... is using speed to divide and conqueror.
The Afterburner is the most important thing you can have in these missions as it will let you out run them.
Pull away from them ... get your shield and armor back up then go sucker them into chasing you again.
Use long range weapons to shoot down your wake and kill them as they come up.
I like to put an Overdrive Injector System on my ships. It makes a fast ship even faster - and if you have one of the better armored (and hence slower frigates) it helps make him a fast frigate (at least compared to the Rat's).
The small afterburner I like is the Cold-Gas Arc Jet. It costs more but when speed is life - it's worth it.
Monopropellant I Hydrazine Afterburners are next, then the 1MN AB's.
DO NOT USE THE CIVILIAN AFTERBURNERS. They are to slow and you will get caught.
Just change your tactics as has been advised - and you will find hard missions becoming trivial.
One more thing you might think about doing ... is you don't really need 4 banks of missiles to kill rats at level 1. I like to put a Salvager on there.
Salvaging One Melted Capacitor Console - can get you half a million ISK. They don't drop all the time ... but some of the other stuff is worth some money too.
Using proper tactics - even When Worlds Collide - is not that hard a mission. It just takes longer because there's more Rat's to kill and salvage.
One thing ... when you come through a warp gate on one of these missions, the very first thing you want to do is hit the right triangle on your speed controls and get up to full speed before it all falls off. If you're surrounded by Rat's, turn on your active defense modules and AB out of there.
Get clear - let your shields recharge and repair your armor - then begin approaching the closest group of enemies. Angle toward them, don't just go right into them. As they start to turn into you - turn away and kite them along until you've killed them all. Then do the same things to all the other little clumps of Rats.

Here you go :
Highs : 4x missile launcher
Mids : AB, shield booster, rat specific passive shield hardener
Lows : Whatever you need to fit above (see if Power Diagnostics work for you) + Overdrives
Download Eve Fitting Tool ASAP (can be found in ships forum in a sticky)
Good luck
