This is for the tech savvy people , currently considering on stripping my pc and getting hold of a new case/mobo since my current mobo is pretty ****e.
At the moment im torn between a Asus Striker (SLI) or an Asus Formula (non SLI). Personally its SLI for me so i can at least futureproof it somewhat for a couple more years, but the decider if its possible to use a normal chipset graphics card (7950GT 512mb) and use it with a SLI Mobo, until i can afford 2 x sli cards... or am i jsut plain crazy ......

i'm not 100% sure what your asking.. i think its can u use non sli gfx cards with an sli chipset?
if that is the question, the answer is yes you can. Use a single ATI card if you want, it doesn't matter what you put in if you are just using one card.

You don't need 2 cards with an SLI-compatible board. It can improve the performance, but with some of the current crop of boards, it's note necessary.
Unless you use Vista. In which case you're screwed, no matter what you do.

To quote Haynes:
Unless you have a monitor the size of a house, or have been given the task of animating Shrek 4, you won't need SLI. It's just a way for GPU manufacturers to sell you two cards instead of one. --------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll just throw in my 2 cents here as Ive built many PC in the last few years.....
1. Always buy the best motherboard you can. This is the foundation of the PC and gives you an upgrade path. It is also the hardest part to replace as you need to remove everything!
2. SLI motherboards will run any type of single GPU, you can even run an ATI/Matrox blah blah if you want.
3. My recommendations for a motherboard atm would be:
X38 chipset for intel as this will support Crossfire and latest 1600mhz FSB cpus (also they use pcie2 and some even DDR3 memory....all good for future upgrades).
790FX chipset for AMD as this supports quad crossfire and latest AM2+ cpus (all good for future)
If you want to go the Intel/SLI route the Nvidia 680i chipset gives you the most future proofing or you could wait a few weeks for the new Nvidia 780i to be released. .

Well, my 2 choices were these Striker / Formula . Out of the two, which do you reckon Abbadon? But as you said, i'll most likely be buying after xmas once pressies etc have been dealt with so the 780 chipset might be a viable option by then...

Well betwwen those 2 the big decision is if you decide to go for 2 graphics cards in the future -
Striker = Nvidia cards in SLI Formula = ATI cards in Crossfire
There is no doubt atm that nvidia have the best preforming cards on the market (also less noise, less power needed and less heat generated
However ATI gfx tend to produce better cards for media centre solutions (HDTV etc and reports suggest that quality of graphics are higher when comparing with similar Nvidia card with same quality settings - although as I mentioned at a lower FPS)
If it was my cash I'd go for the Striker purely as I use my PC for games and not media applications and the quality issue is very subjective and probably negligible in most cases.
Also as a side note it supports 3 x pcie gfx cards, always nice for multiple clients or having Eve + forums + other random stuff open at once
The only downsides are that it will not support the new range of penryn Intel cpus which require an FSB of 1600 and no pcie v2 support (the 780i will support these) .

Heh, cheers for the advice, i'll be leaving it for a few weeks at least and see about those 780 chips then make a decision...but for the time being sli is probably my way to go as i find myself playing games/browsing as well as multimedia progs (ps etc etc), so multitasking is a big thing for me (currently have a dual core) and my current mobo is pretty ****e compared to todays standards..
