SIS vs Trailer Ferox
this was made with:
Shadows: Extreme Bloom: high 6 x AA 16 x HQ Anisotropic Filtering
probably some newer grfx cards can do better, but i doubt this will make such a difference. Imho Trinity Trailer was offline rendered..
I'm pretty sure the ship in the trailer is not a Ferox. It is a Nighthawk. Here's my in hangar screenshot of the Nighthawk. Not that far off the trailer (just missing the nice blueish light from the nebula)

To me it looks pretty much as expected (in-game), considering that: - The promo shots and videos only show ships from their "chocolate side" with ideal camera angels and lighting situations. - They are most likely recorded and then downscaled from very large resolutions, effectively getting you high quality anti-aliasing for free (we can't use AA with HDR).
This is completely normal and certainly not unethical. The graphics do come to life only in the game though, so it's not as "bad" as most of these screenshots look. What looks like a blurry pixelated texture on a screenshot, may actually be a really nifty shader effect in action.

Originally by: Ishina Fel All of the trailers are rendered at huge resolutions with *massive* post-processing. I would guess that we're talking things like several dozen passes of antialiasing, much bigger texture sizes, global illumination and triple precision HDR here. These trailers are not FRAPSed in real time, they are rendered frame by frame directly from the engine! This level of quality can likely not be rendered in real time!
No, that's untrue
The guy who makes all of CCP's trailers has a little modified game client, in which he can make ships fly in formation, do banked turns, whatever. He also has a stupidly high-powered PC and probably access to the DX10 version of the engine. They are likely frapsed at about 2000xwhatever, not huge sizes. And as it's a game engine, using the games models, the texture sizes are the same no matter what size you render it at, because they are set within the folder. Just because you render it smaller, doesn't mean the texture looses quality.
Thats true for the old client but is it true for the new client?

Edited by: Yuki Santara on 28/11/2007 23:10:12 To illustrate the point, here are some shots I reduced in size from my native resolution to 800x640 and saved in lossless PNG format. It is very likely that I had HDR disabled when I made these shots so they aren't representative (and now my test client refuses to start), but I think you will agree that the edges look pretty smooth: http://www.abload.de/img/gate195y.png http://www.abload.de/img/gate292u.png http://www.abload.de/img/gate3e5z.png
I'm quite certain this is why the promo shots have this "almost-painted" feel to it. Now add better lighting conditions and full scale bloom and I see no reason why there should have been any (further) post-processing or offline-rendering involved.

you lot are hilarious
Im sorry I didnt release the expansion was officaly out already, but according to everyone here it is lol.
There is a reason the word "Test" appears in Test Server.
Stupid as it may sound but maybe there testing the new engine on this "Test" server...I know its a crazy thought.
Another crazy crazy idea is maybe its not the final build we will see when it is "officialy" released, because (heres that word again) maybe there testing it in stages.
..but carry on

What you have to remember is that now the ships reflect their environment. This means that the colour of the system your in, and the kind of lighting it has greatly affects the end result. Secondly, everyone seems to choose to compare screenshots taken with less than perfect settings. While this may be the standard running level for the vast majority of people, CCP aren t going to deliberately tone down the settings in their videos, they are going to make it do all it can do. And lastly, it s very probable that the final video is downscaled from the source footage. This gives it the same effect as anti-aliasing and hides many deficiencies in quality that the textures can give for the same reason that downscaling an image makes it look better. br br Run your settings on a powerful machine, with all the settings maxed out and in the same environment, at the same angle, as CCP, and I have a feeling you ll get near identical results. br br Edit: Damn it, why do the people with the huge screens always fail at linking? br br [u b /b rl= http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3029/20071128051543tl5.jpgClick for image[/url]

HDR yes, AA no.
I like the presence of jaggies, but not overly so. I've gotten used to em and seeing as that'll be the only way I can tell visually nowadays what a game is from RL, I'll stick to it.
Beowulf movie scares the bleeding crap out of me if games got that good looking.
Oh, turn on HDR guys, it makes everything look damn close to the trailer. -
