well... i dont think this movie is marketed at a robocop reboot.. its more like "upgrade to today's action standards"
so im assuming.. the plot will almost entirely remain similar. |

Yeah. Bullcrap. Everybody raises the Hindenburg as an argument against hydrogen airships. So effing what? The hydrogen exploded, so will the kerosene in today's aircraft, too. Oh, and today's aircraft crash all the time, I'd say at least once per month somewhere on this world an aircraft crashes- but is anyone crying for an end of the aeroplan era? At least after 9/11 people could have screamed that aeroplans are far too dangerous, but nobody did. For unknown reasons our world is slowly losing helium, helium will be one of the most precious resources within several decades- nobody will be able to afford a whole airship filled with helium, not even Graygor. Yeah i want hydrogen but fighting the negative rep is an issue. And largely hydrogen was smeared for 1 key reason. Pre WW2 competition. UK / USA / France - Planes for travel Germany - Airships. Airships were the king, planes were unsafe, uncomfy and largely horrible. Airships let you travel in the same comfort as you would in any Cunard Line ship and were the favourite of the upper classes (who were also in approval of certain german groups during the perioid). So when the Hindenburg went boom it was smeared to hell and back by industrialists in the UK and USA / France. Same way that public transport was crushed by big oil in the states in the post WW2 era in LA etc. Got to love capitalism eh? Thats largely why this super heavy lift airships never take off (pune intended) as big aerospace companies often buy the patents out and sit on them. Hence why i want no backers.
Glad you brought that up. I wanted to say the very same thing, but it might have sounded like paranoid ramblings from me. So take it out of the mouth of a Brit. The Hindenburg accident (by the way, only 35 persons died in that crash, the other 62 people on board survived. If a modern airliner would explode, I wonder if there would be any survivors at all. so much for "unsafe") was exploited to harm the German pre-WW II economy and carve a niche for the (at that time) unreliable and fragile aeroplanes so especially the US economy could profit.

The monocle never came my way, I presumed that some nefarious type had purloined it. On the subject of Airships I have a Pickelhaube and a Pith Helmet, so I have a hat for every occasion. Kirjava still has it. I will write him a mail so he can contract it to you. And hurry up, Sheimi is already close to 10k, the sooner you get you monocle, the longer you will get to wear it. edit: mail sent. 'Heh, I remember it totally passed me by when I hit 10k Likes. In fact, nobody even noticed and after I said something about it, I get told I needed to post a picture of my character with 10k likes. Kinda hard to post a pic of your own char with 10k likes when that amount hits you while offline. DMC
Oh crap. Sorry DMC, didn't notice it either. I guess you guys will have to be more vocal about your 10k threshold, best is to stir up things already when you hit 9,5 so we can organize the monocle in advance. Kir hasn't answered my mail yet, with a bit of bad luck he is on vacation and our monocle will be unavailable for some time. That thing with the 10k screenshot is new to me, I think you got trolled. But then again, the current monocle owner makes the rules and decides where the monocle goes next, so if Kir told you that, I guess it was kind of legit. But it would have been quite strange, still...

Sure is...
As someone suffering from flight anxiety I always hoped passanger airships would become a reality in my lifetime, but alas, at the moment big airlines and plane manufacturers have successfully suppressed the return of the technology... maybe when flying has become so expensive that nobody will be able to afford it.
...that shouldn't be too long, seeing how airline price competition and demand for ever more air transportation are burning out the business faster then any recession could.

Yep. And after WW2 there were so many pilots and aircraft put up for sale and airlines sprouted like mushrooms.
Airship was left to languish because basically planes "had" to fly as they were a vital transport tool even in the 50s.
Theres also the fact that airships had no military application that a plane couldnt do better.
That said though, should the Israeli Ark airship ever be built the airships true intention as a mini drone carrier will be revealed. Able to stay aloft far longer than any plane and able to fit all the tech needed for the trophy shield. Planes just cant fit it as atm its too bulky.
Airship was just too far ahead of its time. That said that, if WW1 had never happened we wouldnt have seen the appearance of fighters and bombers in their current form perhaps. And the airship would be king.
The UK and USA had their own programmes as did france, Russia and Japan but the German expertise was years ahead of them.
You should read up on the US Navys airship core. Wonderful idea but the American ships were just too damn small and under powered to handle seawinds. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Id say the opposite is happening. World flight is increasing thanks to China finding its feet. It may feel like that in the EU but airlines are falling over themselves to accommodate the Chinese boom. And theres 3x as many of them nearly as in the EU.
Jet fuel is the bottle neck there though. And while the solar plane "does" work, its far too inefficient for anything other than a gimmick atm. But the same thing was said of the kittyhawk.
Hydrogen fuel for hybrid planes was talked about at the Paris airshow but the aviation industry have bitten their own arse thanks to all their slandering of the gas.

Well, to be honest, storms and heavy seawinds were also a huge problem for the larger German airships, they couldn't just fly above the storms like modern airplanes, they had to maneuver around them which often caused huge delays in their flight plans. I am not even sure if it would be possible with today's technology to build a large airship that can fly through the stratosphere above the weather- but it sounds like an interesting technological challenge to me.

That would mean pressurising the cabin.
Im not big on my gasses but wouldnt hydrogen be less buoyant at higher altitudes? I guess that would need more engine power to compensate. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

I think it's todays problem with finite resources- the scarcer they become, the more profit is to be made with them. So an incredibly huge lobby grew that was powerful enough to quench all technological alternatives. And the rarer those resources get, the more profit is to be had, so these lobbies become more powerful instead of less as the age of fossil fuel is slowly fading.

Yea, it would... but they could mix in other noble gases like helium to compensate for that... in theory.
@ Zimmy: True, but don't think for a second that those lobbies didn't use some of their profits to buy up and develop alternatives for themself that sit in their desks to be whipped out, and of course be exploited as soon as the aforementioned "finish line" is crossed... one might think those companies don't plan ahead, but they do. I am not a physicist, either, but I reckon a high altitude airship would have to be GIGANTIC even compared to the large Zeppelins of the early 20th century.
