Wow. This is just so absolutely rare. Folks see "Gravity" and are just..........
"I saw the much-anticipated new film from director and co-writer Alfonso Cuar+¦n (CHILDREN OF MEN; Y TU MAM+ü TAMBI+ëN) a couple weeks back, and I came out thinking one very clear thought: "I've never seen anything like that before in my life." It's not a thought that crosses my mind that often anymore (especially after watching a movie), and that's sad.
"But I've gotten so used to it, that when something like GRAVITY comes into my life, it's hard to let go. If you've seen clips or trailers for GRAVITY (as I'm sure most of you have), you're going to regret ever having seen a frame of this film out of context once you've seen the complete work.
"The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as a pair of astronauts (actually, she's a medical engineer, as she points out) that work together to stay alive after a horrific accident eliminates every possible place they have left to go in space.
"Technical achievements aside (I still don't know how they did most of what I saw in this film), GRAVITY is a tale about surviving, being very alone, and the things we cling to and remember when we're fairly certain the end is near. But on a pure geek level, well, the power of this film's effects are immeasurable. Any young children with dreams of being astronauts may have those dreams ripped from their hearts after seeing GRAVITY. At times, it's one of the most terrifying, awe-inspiring things you've ever seen." Why do bikers wear leather ??-á Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.-á -- Paul Lynde |

Michael Dietrich linked a funny article about the "Robocop" remake over in the Schwarzenegger Avatar 2 Thread.
"A hand on RoboCop is more doomed than a Hand in King's Landing."
About that "Carrie" remake:
The actress playing her is (of course) too pretty. Half the point of the original story was that she is indeed a rather plain, homely girl. Sissy Spacek (who is not actually that homely) let them really work on making her somewhat unattractive. Someone whom one would believe would have trouble getting asked out to a prom.
This is just a case of dolling up the concept with CGI effects (which were not even needed during the original...why now ?). And a 'pretty and popular' actress. I mean, does a burning gym with locked doors really need computer help to make it more scary ? I don;t think so. If so, there is just a failure of imagination of all involved.
Another pointless exercise in cultural regurgitation, and most indeed. Why do bikers wear leather ??-á Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.-á -- Paul Lynde |

I can sympathize here.
My wife has a peculiar tendency to watch "Housewives of *random_city*" and it drives me crazy at times. Most of the cast of those "reality" shows fall firmly under both categories.

Another one for the pile of "Everybody must be a winner because losing is bad"
New California youth football mercy rule inflames
"Northern California Federation Youth Football League (NCFYFL) instituted stiff new penalties for any teams that beat opponents by 35 points or more.
"Specifically, those teams will be fined $200 and their coaches will be suspended from all league activities for two weeks. The penalty is a drastic change for the league of 7-13 year-olds, which previously issued teams with a warning following such blowouts and required a written description that detailed what the victorious team had done to try and keep scores low."
"One team has stopped attempting any field goals, leaving kicker James McHugh unable to attempt any scoring kicks except points after touchdowns. That's a problem for a 13-year-old who hopes to serve as a high school placekicker in fall 2014."
""Now they are afraid their coaches are going to get suspended and they are not going to have a coach to come out here and play football,"
""We lose a lot of football players because their teams lose so badly," Rochin told KCRA. "If they are constantly getting beat, who wants to play anymore? We lose kids all season long because of that.
"It's not hurting the kids, it's teaching them compassion for the other team.
