I've just installed the game on Windows XP, patched it to the latest version, got DX 9.0b - game loads fine, created character, click character to enter the game...
And boom, on the "connecting to subspace" screen, I get a Visual C++ runtime error. Can't find a fix. Gah.
Anybody got any tips?

HASMat, I believe your RIVA TNT2 is too old to support EVE. The video card needs to support hardware T&L and I doubt yours does. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
The other ppl in this thread having problems, pls post your hardware specifications and driver versions so I or someone else on the board can try and give you an answer.

The issue would appear to be because the graphics card doesn't support hardware TnL.
I've found a program called 3D-Analyze which actually allows emulation of Hardware TnL on non-TnL cards (it's performed via software). However, I can't get it working with Eve (it works with other games, eg GTA 3).
So... I've emailed the author of the program. It appears to be some kind of bug related to loading Eve.

Mal, Devilangel and HASMat, you're all up the creek without a paddle. Mal guessed the reason: Neither the TNT nor the Intel 82x chips support full hardware T&L, which EVE requires to run. If you want to play the game without crashing every five seconds, you will have to upgrade.
This page contains a list of cards both supported and unsupported.

Maybe not - I have contacted the author of 3D-Analyze, and we are working together to attempt to get Hardware TnL Emulation working with Eve. Assuming everything goes to plan, I plan to put together an UNOFFICIAL patch which will allow the game to run on Non-TnL graphics chipsets.
I'm eternally greatful to Thomas Bruckschlegel of 3D company Tommti Systems who has personally taken it upon himself to see if there's something which can be done here...
I will post more information tomorrow.

Well, if you are docked at a station you can play the game with the 3d-analyze patch. But you cannot enter space, then it will crash.
Mal Reynolds -> did you get a response from the company?

your best solution is to buy a T&L capable card for 50 US dollors on up and leave the TnT to the old games.....
you would be much better off, then trying to emulate anything for a TnT......and playing EvE....
just my two cents...
EvE is demanding on everything ecspecially video....lower end cards and ecspecially ones without T&L will not give you a good fun time in EvE....plus games like SWG wont even load without a T&L capable card....

Well, I run a GForce4 TI 4600 (mentioned as one of the tested and approved cards) and got the C++ runtime error twice, yesterday. First time for the error. This was at peak server load so that may or may not be a factor.
I've updated all my drivers, I run a Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz machine with 1028 SDRAM, Direct X 9.0b, Latest nVidia drver for the TI 4600.
The CTD's I've experienced, beyond the C++ errors, are really putting me off this game. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue. - Franžois, duc de La Rochefoucauld |

I run it on my home pc 700Mhz + GeFor 2 smoothly, and its a really slow and old pc. But as I spend 10-12 hours a day away from this, I normally use my laptop to play the games, but if I give you 50 bucks you''re more than welcome to give my centrino laptop an upgrade, coz I can''t upgrade it!...

I got a Thinkpad laptop with the Intel graphicsI card. A few weeks ago I couldnt even see the EULA but after the latest patch I can get into the station like normal, buy sell and chat but when I try to enter space or look at the map I get this runtime error like you people.
My comp can handle most other 3D games but doesnt support hardware T&L. People dont generally buy laptops to play games but sometimes they want to from time. I think this is a problem that can be solved and Im tired of this sentiment "just upgrade" since many laptops cant be upgraded and I for one wont buy a new laptop just to play Eve more comfortably.
Why cant I have the option to chat and mine with low quality graphics and no sound.
I sorta know what the mining lazer looks like by now and allready have a tape with the mining sound to listent to when Im not online :-)
