lemme guess, since he became pure "white", does it mean that Draea became pure "black"?
I'm soo seeing where this is going, and it's not good, Supreme good and Supreme evil are the most terrible things that it can spawn from us.

A good story but a very scary one and I think things will get a lot worser before/if they get better. Nale is about to set foot on a path that will lead to heinous crimes and atrocities. A man who thinks he is in possesion of the ultimat truth is capable of anything.
This is so much more scary since we had and have people like this in the real life.
To Grimpak: IMHO Nale is definitly not pure "white" he is the one woh became "black". However it will be interesting to find out if or how Draea was changed by the Book. I must go into space again, to the lonely stars and the endless sky, and all I ask for is a fast ship and a star to steer her by... |

A pure "white" Nale is quite possible, since he's becoming the embodyment of a saying we have here in my country "of good intentions, the hell is full" (de boas intent)es o inferno est฿ cheio). ---

And why is he "white" if he is hell bound? (about which we both seem to agree.)

if you consider yourself the epithome of Good, anyone below you is not that good, thus evil. if you're pure white, you can't see the shades of grey, just black.

This nails it. One of the cornerstones of Black Mountain is that nobody is evil: People merely have different (and clashing) motivations. Even the ones who commit horrendous acts do it for a reason, no matter how twisted and debased that reason may seem to others. We'll see this again in a very ugly story called "The Canvas" that deals with Yorlas and Shiqra, the traitors on Draea and Nale's teams, respectively. They had their motivations, too.
I'm rather curious about one thing: Has everyone already figured out the references in last story's hallucination, the one that's reflected in the final scene of "Pushing Towards Bliss"? Or are people just assuming I made up freaky stuff that turned Nale into a superhuman?

Quite interesting, I truly think that this so far has been the best one. I think that Nale is kinda following the old saying, "The path to hell is paved with the best intentions", I think thats what Grimpak was trying to get at.
I can not wait for the next installment! good stuff!

This is the best Black Mountain yet, and I'd have to think a while on it but it might be my favorite chronicle ever (although the Minmatar coming-of-age story with the tattoos was really good). Here's a question for discussion in this thread: If you had the Book, would you do what Nale wants to do? Or would you find the same objections against it?

Really nice chronicle! I started looking at that section of the website few days ago, and I don't regret it!
I think it finally just is a question of "point of view"... We, as reasonnable beeing, usually see things mostly on the same angle. I don't know lots of people who stares at the logo under a cup, when it's full of coffee: we usually drink it, not taking a look at what is around (or even under, and why not beyond) the coffee at the time we drink.
This story kinda turns things around, showing that good or bad has motivations. Still, both are questionnable! ^^
Are the ways of the earthling man really not belonging to himself? (Jeremiah 10:23 ) Are we unable to rule ourself that way?
...
In any case, keep this story up, I'll be waiting for the next chapter. __________________ Thala Lonely pilot |

Edited by: Lief Siddhe on 04/12/2007 18:02:34 This is a great chronicle series. I am not getting your references for now, although one could compare Nale's Black Mountain to a ship he is connected with and a part of, and the Black Sea as space that surrounds us in our ships. The whole Black mountain story reminds me of a song:
With the wind at your back and the light in your eyes, the freeze of your blindness will show. Under the cloud cover, the flares signal change. Will you ever know? The fields they are burning, the smoke chokes your breath. Will you stand or run? You dream of a mountain, the peaks rise to the sky. Will you answer its call? Is your heart still beating? Can you feel this at all? This landslide will bury us all. With the storm on your mind and the clouds in your eyes, will you survive? Lie in wait, I will lie awake. Falling through a world unknown. --- Beneath all of our differences there's a single bond between every living Gallentean that makes us hard as diamond: a love of freedom. |

well, I can get some vague reference to a Marvel comic I once read.
one of the heroes there, in an attempt to reach a Nirvana-like state, decided that the best way to achieve that would be to become a fully neutral being, and to do that, he removed the Evil and the Good from him.
It became a disaster, since the Evil persona attempted to take over the universe (he was evil anyways), and the Good persona attempted to destroy the universe, since the ultimate Good could only be achieved by killing all the creatures that had a semblance of evil in them (IE: the entire universe).
In the end he had to return both personas to him.
What does this have to do with Nale and Draea? I see traits of both "sides" in them. Nale, after coming into contact with the Book, now tries to remove the evil by surpressing a part of the mankind's psyche.
What about Draea? before she came into contact with the book she looked like a good minion of the evil already. I can't even imagine what has become of her.
so yes, the end will be ****in' epic. ---

Well, I was never good at catching your references. Maybe the black mountain and the see in which Nale jumps are somehow tied to Nietzsches Abyss? And did Nale and Draea see each other in the book induced vision? In Nales vision she is there, not jumping but having a shadow hovering behind her. Does that refer to her violent past or impulses? Nales rebirth as the black mountain means he finds his destiny as he "has always been there"?
As for the last part of pushing towards bliss, the tree and the rocks try to hold Nale back (or distract him). And the spirts guide him towards removing free will from humanity?
I guess I'll have to wait for further chronicles to find out.
question for Grimpak: when you said Nale became pure white you meant the way he now sees himself and not how you see him?

Originally by: Lief Siddhe Also Drea's cohorts kinda reminded me of the riders of the apocalypse
"Krezek ... liked torturing his subjects without ever being in their presence. Falau was ... wars. Yorlas ... drew his pleasure from the successful taking of a life and the individual marking of his kills. Polok ... had a preference for being called the Plague"
Bingo.
Which begs the question of who Nale's teammates are: Monas, Zetyn, Berkho and Shiqra. For the record, the word "sicarius" ("sicarii" in plural) once meant the same as the word "iscariot".

In some earlier BM thread I mentioned that Nale and Draea are effectively one whole person split in two, with the extremes of each side suitably exaggerated.
As for what happens to Draea, well, like Nale she gets pushed further along her path, but it may not be the one you expected. If it's darkness turning darker that you want, wait for "The Canvas" to be published.
Originally by: Alex Bester I guess I'll have to wait for further chronicles to find out.
The text of Black Mountain will never explain exactly why the hallucinatory scene was structured in exactly that way, so if you want to know some of it, read below the
SPOILER, of sorts
While Black Mountain isn't a direct retelling of anything, it does contain a lot of references. Nale's walk through the desert, when he comes to the kingdom of the world (restyled as the map of New Eden), and the rocks turning soft, and the cliff from which he decides to throw himself, is based in good part on the temptation of Christ. The difference is that Christ withstood each temptation, but Nale fell for the last one. There is much I could say about what Nale gave up by the fall and what he gained, but in short it's a reflection on someone who tries to do more good than he should have, takes a huge risk, and fails; and of what happens after.

ah I'm not expecting the darkness turning darker, I'm expecting the darkness getting purer.
evil without a reason to be is not that hard to defeat, while an evil with a single-minded purpose and a clear view of its objectives might even become the worse one can expect.
Like what happened Nale. He was pretty much clouded by doubt. The Book pretty much removed those clouds from his mind and he gained an objective.
selfless throwing yourself to an objective, wether it is "good" or "bad", can transform a regular person in an unstoppable machine. ---

while the rest of you debate about the finer points of the philosophy and deeper meanings behind the story, i shall go one step further.....and do absolutely nothing. Seriously, in matters of such magnificently vague surrealism, i have found that the best course of action.really, it could mean anything from an arthas stlye turn to the dark side or that there is a rather large burger on a curiously black mountain. In an alternate dimension. but...joking aside, this is really one mysterious plot so far, which either means you have no idea where you're going with this or have it all planned out.well, wither way, you have a great thing going here. Keep going! Oh, and if this dosent make sense to anyone, please keep in mind that its 4 in the morning here, and i have an exam tomorrow.er, today. whatever.
