Happens alot on my older pc, couldnt even join a fleet because of it because the client always crashed as soon as i warped to the gate where every one was waiting. On the newer(faster) PC it doesnt happen as often but still is annoying exspecially when you have to sit in that stupid logout warp everytime.

Another update. Like Sevarus I tried the debug process but it brought the system to a crawl, why I have no idea, but I turned it off. After re-installing the drivers clean and a clean install of just the CCP wrapped client the crashes still occur and completely random. I have tried every combination of graphics and detail settings as well as audio, etc... All proved to have no impact on the stability of the client other than slightly affecting FPS.

lsb-release ebuild was masked in Gentoo just yesterday for ~amd64
Today, after a sync, the lsb-release package is nolonger masked, and I installed it.
Eve hasn't crashed on me yet afterwards, though I haven't ran the game for a long time. So whether it's a fix for the random crashes, don't know. But lsb_release is called by the linux client, and the Gentoo ebuild was just unmasked for ~amd64 configurations.
I did witness graphical glitches, misaligned textures etc. after installing the lsb-release. But, at least I haven't crashed on arrival to a stargate today :D

Just a heads-up here guys. If you're having trouble even getting logged in from this issue, try logging in via a different character. It worked for me. Just spent 30 minutes trying to get back in-game after dropping to desktop with this issue... kept getting hung after character select/loading... but when I chose a different character, it popped right in.
Then, when I went back to the 'problem' character... problem has at least temporarily abated, and login as normal.

I'm also noticing a python version mismatch when I run eve via the terminal.. anyone else getting this?

This is most likely a result of a wineserver or process not properly shutting down. If you crash to desktop, and have a hard time restarting EVE, then open a terminal and see if there are any wine related processes still running. If so, kill them.

These python problems are simple to solve.
What happened was your python was updated, but all the modules weren't.
In Gentoo, run python-updater

Same here.
Eve66 client Gentoo (mostly) x86 Kernel 2.6.23-r3 nvdia 100.14.19
It's been solid as a rock with the existing linux client under Revelations since I signed up to the trial when it was released a month back.
Since upgrading to the Trinity client, I get crashes regularly changing from map to map, docking, jumping or just picking my nose ;)
Six shagging times last night trying to get my sparkly new stabber back home in one piece. A pickup that should have taken 20 mins tops took over an hour and left me with an overwhelming urge to pod the cat
Would it be possible to step back to the stable revelations client ? As we don't get the Trinity bells and whistles yet anyway, we're lumbered with an unstable (verging on useless) client for no apparent benefit to us.

Short answer - No :)
Long answer - trinity includes lots of other stuff aside from the new graphics. Have you noticed that the UI is more responsive on the whole, cans open and show their contents quicker and various UI bits are now detachable? --- I use Gentoo/Linux and Gentoo uses software I write |

If you dont mind doing some compiling you should try using wine, didnt have a single crash with it yet.

Well after more testing I have found absolutely no common cause other than playing the game. The crash has happened when doing anything and I mean anything with no specific timeframe.
1. Switching chat windows (in and out of station) 2. Pulling up ship/player info (in and out of station) 3. Launching Drones 4. Opening cargo hold (in and out of station) 5. Opening Drone bay (in and out of station) 6. Rotating ship in station 7. Browsing market (in and out of station) 8. Warping to gate 9. Jumping through gate 10. Using jump bridge 11. activating/de-acivating mods
Tried with clean install of ubuntu 7.10 w/ all updates and running only the CCP wrapped client. I have tried with every combination of graphics/sound settings. I can say that it is definately a client issue at this point and am now awaiting a response from Transgaming/CCP.

Well I took the time to compile Wine with the .diff and tried the premium client w/ sm2 graphics. All I can say is this. Why can't transgaming get it right? All I have to do is disable my NIC, load client and re-enable NIC and log in. The client is stable AND faster. Granted no sound or EvE Voice but ya know what? I don't care. I can play without random crashes and I am not pleading on deaf ears begging for a fix for something that is "officially supported". It is a sad state of affairs when a commercial operation working directly with CCP can't get a stable client yet a FOSS project manages to. Come Wine 0.9.51 or 0.9.52 I am willing to bet it will work as well as it did with Rev. II. Sorry Transgaming but... You fail at EvE.

Actually, while trying to debug these problems I decided to actually pay for Cedega since I very badly want to ditch windows on my main machine for Linux.
I'm not impressed with Cedega. Without just tearing them apart let's just say their product is very experimental. I'll just say this: EVE doesn't work (Even from install on the commercial Cedega) and C&C Generals won't load.
So I blew 15 bucks for Cedega... Caveat Emptor.
But what gets me is that Wine, under the older client, worked great. It was fast, it didn't crash for me, and it just worked.
My suggestion: Give that money CCP gives to Cedega to the Wine team. I'm sure they'd whip up an update that worked well with a little financial support.
My plans, until of course CCP releases a fixed client, is to sit here watching C&C Generals sit at 0% installed for the next three days. It's less painful than reinstalling Windows XP.
Sorry for the tone, I'm a little incredulous at the moment. I was happier when I was hacking Wine to run EVE. It worked.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 11/12/2007 10:39:05 Not going to get into it on the this vs. that....but you do realize that cedega has MULTIPLE engines, right? Two minute search in the cedega forums showed that this one was working:
(from the wiki for C&C Generals) Works with Cedega version(s) 6.0 (best)5.1, 5.0.3, 4.0.1, 4.0 Tested with Cedega version(s) 6.0, 5.1, 5.0.3, 4.0.1, 4.0
You can download those and run them via the cedega interface.
Also in the game settings, you need to ensure that you are running "XP" and not win98.
"Search" can be yer friend.

Have pointed TG at this thread, to make sure that it gets looked into.
We have a fix in testing for some crash issues and hope that these are related to that.

We are going to set up a group for linux and Mac testing, we are just working out the details on how to do it effectively.
Will be a dedicated section of the Bug Hunters most likely.

That's good news.
While we're waiting, cam the upcoming patch be deployed onto a test server so we can debug it?
Or alternatively just release it. I hope I'm not being too harsh (I know you guys are working your tails off). But I'll take my chances at this point.

Unlike the windows side where everyone gets the test client/new builds to log into sisi for feedbacK? I don't mean to sound facetious here, but while the wine users are testing and fixing their 'client' the linux/mac "official" users must wait for a patch and provide no feedback other than the way its being done now?
Or ??? I understand that cedega/TG are more "closed source", but does everyone involved understand the value of the users who beat and bang on this day in and day out or not? Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding the post.
A little clarification would be helpful.

to those with crashing issues. when I played rev2 on whine, I had similar issues. finally I read that disabling hardware acceleration for audio would fix stability issues (it did), could you try to disable the hardware acceleration and eve voice and test then?
also, on wine, sometimes eve freezes around the time a session change occurs (session change is usually fine, this happens maybe 5-10% of them). My crashes are completely random. There is no activity that can be done in the game that I have not had it crash while doing. The only thing I can say for sure is that I think I've only crashed once when I was docked compared to the hundreds of crashes I've encountered doing anything else. I also get the "Bad Stuff" messages in my console, and after reading this forum I've decided to try completely disabling all sound to see if it makes a difference and I'm also going to install this lsb-release that it complains about when it starts and crashes. It would be great to know when the stable patch will be released, and it would be even more interesting to hear why this wasn't tested before doing the trinity upgrade on the servers. Do you need more testers for the linux client or something?

The Issue is that we have to have clean separation of the TQ Client and the SiSi client. Including the underlying Cedega engines.
TransGaming are working on this and we hope to have s olution in place shortly so that you can have 1 TQ client with the stable Cedega engine and a SiSi client with the testing Cedega Engine.
So you can see that this is not quite as easy as it is in windows.
Or current thinking is to have is installed as a separate program, into different directories and such. So it is a matter of getting all this sorted and wrapped into a package for deployment.
