I feel sorry for the Developers at CCP who have worked very hard on bring us what has been the most anticipated update in recent times, and from what i saw of the patch one of the most smoothest and lag free transitions, what now should be a celebration is now over shadowed by a bug that can only be considered gross misconduct.
as a developer myself, i realise the importance of doing install tests, upgrades, uninstalls, compatibility against os, AV etc.
I would give ccp the credit for actually having done this, and wonder if perhaps some form of industrial sabotage or disgruntled employee has had something to do with this.
Perhaps in some days we can hear how this fault was able to arrise.

Hicks: Agreed.
One question - Windows XP x64: anyone know how to back up (restore?) the backup version stored somewhere in the windows directory?
CCP: I'm disappointed in you guys over this, but it happens... and tbh it's a small error on such a large upgrade. I suggest you make the staffer responsible buy all the forum mods and any devs trying to keep the masses calm, a good takeaway meal and make them lots of coffee as punishment...

i WANT A DAM ANSWER NOW OK, IM SO TICKED OFF
A system restore has worked for other users, however it may not be necessary to go to that length. As stated in the original post of this thread there are numerous knowledgebase articles and ways you can fix the single file (boot.ini) that is causing the issue.
Now do I need to unistall the game and re download it?
The patched game itself should be fine.
im afraid bro to even click on it. is this ok if i delete eve and completely dn it now, will it be good then?

Does this bug prevent me from booting to windows or something?
If am in this situaton and have no xp disc, how can i create a boot.ini file?
Im just concerned that i may potentially have to go out and purchase a copy of XP which will cost alot of money, whilst i appreciate that problems may happen on patch days and as such, may not be able to play for a few days as eve is down, is part of mmos'. What i am extremely displeased about is that this has effected me and ME personally. If i cannot boot my computer, well, i cannot do anything. alot of my RL work is obviously conducted on my computer, my family use it for various tasks.
I have never heard of anything like this happening before, ever.
However, i may just be jumping the gun and its nothing to worry about :D
Thanks in advance anyone who answers.

If you have a XP install disc Run it at bootup, press "R" when its loaded, Select your windows install when prompted, type the admin password (if you dont know what this is its probably blank) and type "bootcfg /rebuild" and follow its instructions.
This WILL fix it if you havent got a clue what you are doing.

Even though I'm not terribly bothered by this problem (I just rewrote the file from scratch), I have to give the devs an insult on this one:
"You don't deserve sleep"
You really don't. Bad bad bad work. Horrible- you should literally be ashamed. You have disabled *thousands* of computers. Many of your customers will not be able to fix this themselves.
My mind boggles at the intensity of this screwup. You'd have been better off if you had just published a racial slur in your patch notes.
-- I don't post on my main. The reason is simple- to remain obscure. EVE as a society is a rough place, and I like being anonymous. I'm not afraid. I'm just prudent. |

Also, you can go to start -> run and type in msconfig Go to the boot.ini tab, and type that into notepad. This will show your multi-boot ones IF you havent restarted yet

Bug??? Malicious code - simple as that. I am not quite sure if CCP realized the extent of possible consequences yet. __

Do you have access to a friend's XP CD, or maybe even a cd-burner for yourself, to create an emergency boot disk?

Edited by: Furious Hawk on 06/12/2007 13:00:59 This is odd, I don't have the boot file, yet I remember restarting my computer last night just fine after patching...
Maybe I remember wrong, or perhaps my XP is 1337 and does not need a stupid boot file to tell it what to do. :P
I'm going to wait for an official fix by CCP, instead of downloading the file from a link listed earlier. I just hope the snow in my area doesn't knock down any power cables hehe.

I'm afraid I have to agree with quoted message up above CCP. Seriously, the screwup with the t20 scandal (dead and over with, I know) then this?
Seriously CCP, we all know you're human and can make mistakes, but this just is unforgivable on all counts.

Edited by: The Ptolemy on 06/12/2007 12:57:56 Just had this issue. I was running 2 clients, undocked both and everything froze up. Computer auto-restarted and was missing or corrupt hal.dll. I had to start the Windows Recovery console from my XP CD (that goodness I got the CD instead of just the crappy patition from dell) and recreated the boot.ini (I think, no idea, just did what a knowledge base article I found before this site told me to do). Everything currently is working however I'd just a bit scared to log off. My boot.ini is currently on the system.

Ok, after reading 11 pages, I am still slightly confused!
Last night circa 11pm I opened my client and completed the small patch to Classic, whilst in the background began the download for "Premium". I then promptly installed premium to view the shiny new graphics. 3 Hours of game play later and work this morning I decided to shut down for the night.
This morning, I get up turn the computer on and everything works fine.. No Problems.
My Eve is installed in my "C:" directory with Windows.
Taking advice from an earlier post, I go to "Start->ControlPanel->Sytem->Advanced->Startup and Recovery-> Settings?!?"
I receive the message "The C:\boot.ini file can not be opened. Operating System and Timeout settings can not be changed."
Being that the PC running Windows XP SP2 rebooted fine this morning, am I OK. Do I need to follow paths to repair anything and is there another way of checking that my "boot.ini" file is not corrupt?
Thankyou.

Edited by: Deathcore on 06/12/2007 13:00:03 Just a thought never tried this but from experiance it should work, look at a similar Boot.ini file copy/paste it into notepad, save as a .ini file in the root of your drive.
Quote:
[boot loader] timeout=5 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)\WINDOWS="1"
That should work for most of you, unless of course you have a partitoned drive and/or 2 drives etc etc

The issue was caused only by the patching process itself. As you have already replaced your boot.ini and started up fine, you will be OK -- The cake is a lie! |

Depending on your machine, Windows can start still. This only applies in specific circumstances. Nonetheless: if you do not fix it, you will be affected sooner or later, so better check if you got your boot.ini. __
