If your Windows installation is on the C: drive and EVE is on another drive, eg E: you will be FINE!

Your character is saved on the eve server not client side, it wont be affected.

Man...am I glad my current computer can't handle the premium install! I'm still running classic, so no issues here.
Regardless, I will not be bashing CCP or cancelling my account that I just opened yesterday. I have been with EVE on and off since the Beta, which I was a part of. Through that time, CCP has been GREAT. Easily the best and most reliable MMO out there. Some may not agree, but that's how I see it. CCP definitely made a huge mistake in allowing this type of error to occur, but I know they will make sure it never happens again.
Obviously lots of great advice in this thread on fixing the issue. If anything, EVERYONE should learn from this problem - keep an up-to-date system restore at all times. Make lots of backups of important data. If reasonable, keep a cheap computer for work/school related uses.

I had a very similar experience to 'The Ptolemy' although my problems would now appear to have been caused by updating my test client. The DELL knowledge base and Windows CD came to my rescue however and it wasn't such a big deal. I am probably going to have to go through the routine again this evening as I updated my live client to premium graphics last night just before logging off for the night. Oh well. :)

Character information is stored server side, and is not affected if you delete or uninstall your eve client. -- The cake is a lie! |

People who lost work should ask themselves - Why did i destroy my harddrive? With a little bit of searching they could have found out it's as easy as get a bootdisk and place a text file on their HD....
I'm truly staggered by the amount of people that think a format is always the only solution to whatever Windows does. If the data was that important those people will have to ask themselves why they systemrestored and formatted so quickly.

I just want to point out that anyone with a dual boot machine, or machines with utility partitions (Dell, HP) need to use the Windows Recovery Console to restore the boot.ini, unless you know the geometry of your disks, and where the windows partition starts.
Full instructions can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330184
Hope this helps.

Im not at home but im pretty certain i updated b4 4am.
I am concerned as some people (myself included) do not have a windows XP disc since retailers do not include them in prebuilt machines (such as pcworld, staples, currys or whatever).
Does this bug prevent me from booting to windows or something?
If am in this situaton and have no xp disc, how can i create a boot.ini file?
Im just concerned that i may potentially have to go out and purchase a copy of XP which will cost alot of money, whilst i appreciate that problems may happen on patch days and as such, may not be able to play for a few days as eve is down, is part of mmos'. What i am extremely displeased about is that this has effected me and ME personally. If i cannot boot my computer, well, i cannot do anything. alot of my RL work is obviously conducted on my computer, my family use it for various tasks.
I have never heard of anything like this happening before, ever.
However, i may just be jumping the gun and its nothing to worry about :D
Thanks in advance anyone who answers.
Do you have access to a friend's XP CD, or maybe even a cd-burner for yourself, to create an emergency boot disk?
I have a CD burner! My system has a hidden partition (seems to be fairly standard for pc world kit) also - dunno if that helps.

Well I am sitting at work reading this and from what I have read my XP Home will need fixing too. I would note I booted up no problems this morning however I did not pay much attention to the screen (in the shower at the time)EvE fired up with no issues.
When I get home tonight I'll try the fix however I dont see what all the fuss is about. Worst comes to worst I'll do a full reinstall. TBH my machine could use one anyhow.
For those people without disks see if you have any friends with one as all your activation codes for your install will be on your PC somewhere. It is a time consuming process but view it as an opportunity to have an early spring clean for the holiday season. For people who have not done a full reinstall before you will be surprised at how much more responsive your machine will be after a few hours work

Even though I agree with your other points, CCP have made similar errors in the past (deleting stuff outside the instalation directory). but meh, mistakes happen and if your computer is so vital that you loose thousends of dollars worth of stuff by reinstalling (even though it isn't necerary) you should probably have considered to have a proper back up strategy and not even be installing games on that system. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

I find this an easier suggestion:
Quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you installed the premium patch and didnt reboot yet there's an easy fix. 1. Locate your "boot.ini.backup" file in C:\WINDOWS\pss . 2. Copy it to your desktop. 3. Delete the ".backup" extension so teh file is named "boot.ini" 4. Copy your brand new shiny boot.ini to your root directory. (in most cases c:\) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What does #4 exactly mean? ROOT DIRECTORY??
also it seems my boot file was also deleted however, my comp ws able to restart.
my folder goes as following: C:/program files/ccp/eve
does this mean my comp isnt affected?

So you have more than one partition, ie. one for Windows installation, and another for games and applications?

As i was slowly sinking into depression whilst reading the news, i came across the dude/dudette who said that you're immune if you install to non-sys partition. lucky me, i've seperated system from my documents/files/games ages ago. made a good habbit of it and still am glad for it :)
