Well so far Ive been unable to recover my OS.
Not being all that technically minded it looks as if the PC will have to go and be repaired, no doubt at some cost.
Well done.

Im not at home but im pretty certain i updated b4 4am.
I am concerned as some people (myself included) do not have a windows XP disc since retailers do not include them in prebuilt machines (such as pcworld, staples, currys or whatever).
Does this bug prevent me from booting to windows or something?
If am in this situaton and have no xp disc, how can i create a boot.ini file?
Im just concerned that i may potentially have to go out and purchase a copy of XP which will cost alot of money, whilst i appreciate that problems may happen on patch days and as such, may not be able to play for a few days as eve is down, is part of mmos'. What i am extremely displeased about is that this has effected me and ME personally. If i cannot boot my computer, well, i cannot do anything. alot of my RL work is obviously conducted on my computer, my family use it for various tasks.
I have never heard of anything like this happening before, ever.
However, i may just be jumping the gun and its nothing to worry about :D
Thanks in advance anyone who answers.
Do you have access to a friend's XP CD, or maybe even a cd-burner for yourself, to create an emergency boot disk?
I have a CD burner! My system has a hidden partition (seems to be fairly standard for pc world kit) also - dunno if that helps.
So you have more than one partition, ie. one for Windows installation, and another for games and applications?
Chances are its windows data files for installing windows not the os in its operational form on the hidden partition.

The instalations that caused problems have been removed from the download location. So if you download your eve updates right now it should be ok.
If you run the update you downloaded right after deployment of trinity you will be screwed. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

I cannot understand. There are people here in the forum complain that they PC isn't working and what to do. Or blame CCP.
Hold on a sec. a) First of all to be online and here means you either have access to 2nd computer or your is working.
b) If you gave your computer to someone to sorted and they told you "format and reinstallation of windows" then they don't know how to properly solve a problem like this. There are tools the PROPER profecionals use that check a disk/computer for basic issues. Especialy when MS screws the windows\config folder ALL THE TIME real engineers know how to do it.
c) regarding to "whom I sue", "compensation etc", STOP NOW. Sue MS for the incompetend system they build and that allowed 3rd party applications be able to get access and delete critical system files. It can happen to anyone and as you can see ANY 3rd party program can screw your system up. None can prove that you had a problem either way. Even MS doesn't compensate on issues they create.
d) The responsible people should make a list of all the trolls here and start popping them.

I am running media pro sp2 and boot.ini is screwed, if your running any version of XP, more then likely u r affected, however im sure there can be certain situations where people might have some kind of program running in the background that protects the boot.ini file from being corrupted or deleted, and probally are totally unaware that they even have this.

but still what has our boot.ini to do with eve???
nothing, it simply lets the NTloader (the process that kickstarts a windows install, find the partition that your windows install is on.
rather luckily if your windows install is in the default place, and on the default active partition, then windows should just work.
this is a*****up of monumental proportions, really honestly id be supprised if ccp doesnt get in serious trouble for this.

That is not your windows boot.ini, thats the one that eve uses.
Your windows boot.ini should be in C:\

I decided to cancel the download and subsequently cant run eve right now...
If you cancelled the download, you should have no problems with this issue. If you cancelled the installation of the downloaded content patch, there is a chance your boot.ini has been removed. I would suggest checking it is there, and if it is not, follow the steps in the original post to fix it. -- The cake is a lie! |

i agree with this statement
this is the reason why i run linux on my main machines and windows on the ones i game with but still it is an unbelivable error made by ccp that can not be excused at all
i really don t care what happens to my windows machines since i just reinstall if something happens fixing it is too much work hehe and i have nothing important on them anyways
the thing is though like some of the ppl here said earlyer there are some players out here that are totally computer literate and or only have 1 computer we don t know yet how many people are affected by this error that are not able to boot and can not read this messages
if i would be a gm or boss of ccp i would put on a big jacket its gonne be a hell of lawsuits coming your way especially from the usa
this fopar could have been avoided if somebody would have tested the patch before it went live

Thank you for spamming this in game. If this actually ended up causing problems because of the missing boot.ini I would have been mighty POed during my next reboot. :)
Fortunately my install on the computer I updated first is pretty vanilla so the example given should work out fine. :)

Originally by: Kepleious Ok, I'll admit I'm confused.
1. I seem to have downloaded the premium content after upgrading classic yesterday evening, either 2300 or 2400. 2. I am running XP SP2 3. EVE is on Drive C 4. I do not have a system boot.ini file. 5. I booted my computer this morning, say 1230 GMT, without incident. 6. Do I now have to leave the computer on because I've played EVE or would it not have booted if I have the problem?
Thanks,

Likely, your boot.ini file is either there but flagged "hidden file" or it's in another system folder, as sometimes happens. Don't worry about it. ------------------------ CCP Bricked your PC? No bootdisk? Don't panic. All is not lost. Try this. |
