Edited by: DirtyHarry on 06/12/2007 07:17:08 CCP what about those with multiple boot systems? what are you going to suggest for them? the solution you gave there only applies to those who have 1 operating system installed on their PC and that that operating system is on the "default" location that windows puts it in, and not an extra partition.
Those with multiple boot systems, my first advice would be to use system restore if you have it. If that fails you will have to manually create the boot.ini file like the dev said in the original post, HOWEVER you will also have to add in your extra windows installs, this is by adding extra lines of code with the location of the extra installs disks rdisks and partitions.
Also those who will suggest using recovery console and bootcfg /rebuild , that isn't realistic as many people wont have their windows CDs be it through piracy or preloaded systems from companies. On top of that when it scans for windows installs its a possibility it wont find extra installs for those multibooters thus them having to do it manually (i had this prob myself).
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000492.htm < for the multibooters who are stuck, that may at least help you understand what the stuff in the boot.ini file is so you can add in the extra detail for your other installs.
ps: prepare for the storm tomorrow ccp when people arrive home from work and switch on their PCs

That is false. I run my games from another partition, and my boot.ini is missing.

Go to start -> run -> cmd Type find "" C:\boot.ini
If its there it should read something like ---------- C:\BOOT.INI If its not there it should say File not found - C:\boot.ini

Welp... As a Sirmoll would say "We didn't want that Boot.ini anyways"
This is a pretty serius screwup CCP.. Are you trying to give us a hint? I.E We don't really want you playing our game so here is a patch to make sure you don't ever play it again..
How something like this could be missed by quality controll is beyond me. Chalk up another negative mark on your record CCP.
Im just glad i caught this before shutin down my system.. I am sure your going to have LOTS of people online tomorrow ((After they have to fix their computers)) screaming about this.

Originally by: VossKarr I find this an easier suggestion:
Quote: If you installed the premium patch and didnt reboot yet there's an easy fix. 1. Locate your "boot.ini.backup" file in C:\WINDOWS\pss . 2. Copy it to your desktop. 3. Delete the ".backup" extension so teh file is named "boot.ini" 4. Copy your brand new shiny boot.ini to your root directory. (in most cases c:\)
This worked for me. Also, the part about windows service pack 2 is wrong. It nuked my boot.ini. When I right click the "My Computer" icon and hit properties it says this:
System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
My boot.ini definately got nuked. Thanks for the infos VossKarr. Save me a lot of time.

Edited by: Alitha Maru on 06/12/2007 07:19:10 I am running Windows XP and Windows Vista, dualboot. I was in Vista when I upgraded last night before I went to bed. I obviously did not check boot.ini before I went to work because I was a bit in a hurry. But the machine is still on at home. Also, EVE is installed on a partition than both XP and Vista.
The XP partition is the first one, then comes the Vista partition which I was in when I upgraded. Am I affected when I get home (?)
I see boot.ini's for one partition, but how would I write one if I have two like this?

For Dell users with a hidden restore partition You may use this boot.ini :
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Notice the "partition(2)" instead of "partition(1)" Change the "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" if you have a Home edition or a media Center Edition --------- Red Panda ---------

Don't think so. I'm on my laptop right now, which has no boot.ini, and has been rebooted, so as long as you can get in Windows, you should be ok.

Ok, two things.
1) This guy " Originally by: Kittamaru -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JUST AN UPDATE:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is apparently IMMUNE to this bug... I have tested this, so have my corpmates. If you have Win XP SP 2 (and you SHOULD) you should be just fine!"-----------------------------------------------------------
was obviously trying to mislead people to get them to ruin their computers and should have his account deleted. Saying that you can your corpmates have "tested" it is complete BS. His ass should be suspended.
2) Your quality control people should all be fired. This is a huge **** up on your part CCP and you've shown that while you may have come up with a sweet game your company lacks a commitment to ensure the quality of your product. "Oh look it looks real nice, but it might destroy your operating system!" I personally am ****ed off. If there ends up being a class action lawsuit or whatnot due to negligence count me in. Unbelievable this crap.

Since it did not reboot sucessfully, you need to use your windows disk to restore your boot.ini file. There are instructions in an announcement in the Player News Center item. The instructions for those who rebooted are at the bottom, after clicking "Read more".
Quote: For users who have rebooted their computers after installing the Classic to Premium patch:
Boot from your OS cd and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. You must be logged in as the machine's local administrator. Choose the corresponding number asked of you for your OS is on, normally its #1 Then type: - Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini - DEL C:\Boot.ini - BootCfg /Rebuild - Fixboot

Here is why restarting your computer even with a nuked boot.ini works:
If you have edited nothing after your boot.ini was killed, and you restart, Windows will choke while trying to find the file and call to the backup. It replaces the file on it's own. I AM NOT SAYING GO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.
I however, am on a boot camped MacBook Pro, and am now screwed. Very very screwed.

Ok, guys, quit flaming. It seems like an honest mistake, and one that they are trying to fix. nothing's gonna completely work, especially after a massive rehaul like this.
Devs, i discovered something interesting. When i did a search for boot.ini in my C:\ drive, i came across a couple of boot.ini files in several of EVE online's system files. I took no notice, as panic of losing my work computer overrode suspicion. after installing the premium client (the full not the patch), i looked again and lo and behold, no boot.ini files except the windows one. Two questions: 1: Did the old version of eve use a boot.ini for anything? I suspect not, but finding one in your core files was kind of wierd. 2: did you overhaul the entire game as to not use it? it would make sense that such a file would be left behind in a patched version. maybe that's what is causing the problem.
Just a hypothesis. I'm not a system wiz, i just notice things.

i'm running windows xp pro x64. installed through patch. to premium. after 10 mins in game. windows crashed to blue screen for a memory dump. which forced me to reboot. i noticed the error but pc did reboot and logged back into eve. logged back out after a while and played another game and that other game is freezing up alot. my problem is that i don't understand all this fixing stuff, like how to get pc to boot from cd-drive then go through all of the fixes. even the dev has posted he has made an error on how to fix it. so what is the fixes? i read the ms fixes and its not the same as what the dev's here are saying. i have no idea of this type of stuff. your talking about stuff i have never done or have any idea of how to do it even with your notes. so the only way i have any idea of how to get this taken care of. is pay ms tech support the 50 or 60 dollars to chat with them over the telephone to have them talk me through the fix..

Here is what I did, I was able to boot from C:\windows
First I did a system restore to a prior point Start/Accessories/system tools
I Copied my boot.ini from that time
I emailed my Boot Ini to myself as an attachment
I undid my system restore
I downloaded my attached boot ini to desktop
I opened My Computer/C: and dragged the boot.ini file
Everything works fine and the eve doesn't need to be re downloaded
Hope this helps
