Well,
Don't want to add much since it's probably hell at CCP office right now, im a software dev, i know this kind of deal (courage guys) just one suggestion :
You should really get rid of that boot.ini file on windows versions.
Seeing what information is stored there (pretty much nothing), why not use registry ?
Or at least rename it in a future patch, your own program files should never be called the same as common system files, that be for windows only of course. Sounds 'smart ass' now the harm is done, but since **** happens all the time doing dev, why not. ;) So at least forgetting to put relative link for file deletion wont touch system files. ;)
Dev team : wish you the best.

Not being all that technically minded it looks as if the PC will have to go and be repaired, no doubt at some cost.
Well done.
C.
Do you have the original Windows install disks handy? Are you able to get through some of the steps in the article here?
Yes, but for some reason my PC wouldn't boot from the XP disk. So I delved into the murky world of the BIOS and set to read from CD ROM only.
My computer would then only post this message on start up.
'DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER'
I probably shouldnt have fiddled with the BIOS, but there you go - if you don't try you can't succeed. (Ive finally got back into the BIOS now and sorted that). Perhaps I've got a hardware fault with my CD-ROM drive? Any ideas on how I should have the BIOS set up correctly?
C.
BOOT disk failure, means it see's the CD drive but the XP cd is not working, is the CD a burned copy or a real copy?

However, when I download the winxpboot.ini and try to rename it to boot.ini within my C:\ folder, it tells me to name it something different as there is already something with that name in the folder.
However, as I said before, as far as I can tell, there isn't. Do I trust the windows message or my own eyes?
Msconfig boot.ini tab "check all boot paths" also states that I am safe..... but still no sign of my boot.ini!
Open c:\ from "My Computer", go to tools, Folder options, seleve view tab, uncheck the following;
"Hide protected operating System files"
and select "show Hidden Files"
then look to see in the boot.ini file is there, if its not, windows is lieing to you and you should trust your own eyes.

The problem with this is that I cannot now put a boot.ini file into my C:\ directory as it wont let me rename any file to boot.ini :P
If u followed instructions and the boot.ini files is not there after the steps indicated, then there is something wrong... (ccp induced)
go to start, run, Type: notepad c:\boot.ini
If you see something like [QUOTE] [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer [/QUOTE]

You either have been biten by the ccp bug or your system boots from another partition (if u have more than one, if not..ccp broked ya puter)
notepad c:\boot.ini bring up:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

I'm running "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition".
There was no boot.ini file in my C:\ directory when I checked it after finding the link to this thread on the login screen of EVE.
I am attempting to use MSCONFIG to verify that I have reconstructed the boot.ini file correctly.
However, when I look at the boot.ini tab, everything is greyed out, including the "Check All Boot Paths" button that the instructions say to use...
What now?

If you've already restarted your computer the most I can suggest is hooking your hd up as slave or raid and replacing the boot.ini that way. :/ Maybe someone else can explain that in a 'computers for the average user' terminology, but I'm bad at explaining that stuff.

Ah the long awaited Jita fix is with us at last.
I ran and rebooted 3 PCs with the new stuff, boot.ini has gone from all of them
Ive only had a chance to check one of them but its just using the backup version like a good little OS should, ill probably shot the fix on later.
It is somewhat difficult to excuse an error of quite this magnitude and whilst i wouldnt wish sacking on anyone I hope someone is at least being made to feel a little uncomfortable over this one.

Btw, I have downloaded the patch the minute the server was back up (about 2.05 AM GMT) and had a look at that premium thing around 6 AM.
I have checked my HDD directory and there is a boot.ini file (it's called BOOT.ini on my PC) and this is what it says inside:
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
Does this mean that I can still reboot fine?
Sry, I don't know too much when it comes to PCs.
You're safe to reboot :) PS: please double check this though.
Clik Start->Run, type: msconfig <hit enter> Then click the boot.ini tab, then click "Check All Boot Paths"
This should check out okay.

I suspect that you didn't follow all of the instructions. Make sure you did the "Check All Boot paths" step and say yes to remove the ones that don't exist.
You should also set the default entry and if you have more than 1 boot partition set the timeout value to 5 seconds. This should mean that you don't get the menu at all if you have one partition and the menu will only hang around for 5 seconds before booting the default config if you have more than one.

1. Is XP Media Edition effected? I ask because when I turned my computer back on this morning, it started fine. (that said, when I looked, the boot.ini file was missing).
2. If I use system restore and go back to before I installed the update, will it replace the boot.ini file?
Thanks in advance for any help and useful comments. ------------------------

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Rollup 2 installed. I downloaded the Premium patch last night and after I was very pleased at looking at the new models, shut down my computer.
I was able to start it up again this morning with no problems, but until I saw the forums, I thought something had went wrong with the patch and I just got lucky.
So I went to try to manually create the boot.ini patch into my harddrive, but the system told me that the file was already created. Of coarse, I do not have my hard drive set to C:\ but another letter.
Again, I was able to start up my computer with no problems with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Ok, on the boot.ini, there is a second box you have to uncheck on windows xp, (yes, i had to make a new boot.ini) and to be honest, they told you most everything of what to do...tools/folder options/view, Show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected system files.
This is a very easy thing to do, and if people like FHPhantom would start doing what is stated instead of yelling about it, it shouldn't be hard to make a boot disk and then from there make a boot.ini. All the information needed is already IN THIS POST.
So CCP made a monumental screw up to a file, which microsoft really should have protected better in the first place, do you think they have some sort of illuminati ring designed to destroy the computers of anyone that played wow or everquest to be the sole dominator of the MMORPG world?

If the system is booting fine, then you should be ok to continue as is. That said, it is a good idea to replace the boot.ini file, and the links provided at the start of this thread should help with that. -- The cake is a lie! |
