I tried the method of replacing boot.ini with the boot.ini backup file from C:\Windows\pss, and it worked fine on my laptop. However, on my PC, the backup file doesn't exist. Also, I realize this sucks, but in my own opinion, some people need to calm down.

People who only have a vendor specific Win XP recovery CD (in my case that CD only allows me to "restore factory settings", i.e. it would format everything) may want to take extra precautions. A typo in your boot.ini may prevent you from accessing your disk, the same may be true if you use a replacement nt kernel loader (for example for custom boot screens), or have several partitions.
I tried using a "standard" boot.ini, and was no longer able to boot from my disk. As a precaution for this case you could make a set of boot floppy disks if you have a drive for those, make a bootable cd, or a bootable usb stick (http://www.student.livjm.ac.uk/cmpsgoos/usb_bootdrive_guide.htm for how to make a bootable usb stick). If you create a DOS bootable medium, you may need additional software on your boot medium to access NTFS file systems (http://www.free-av.com/antivirclassic/avira_ntfs4dos.html).
In my case, deleting the boot.ini from DOS allowed me to boot from the hard disk again.

Well mine got deleted and i rebooted, but all you have to do is make another you can do it without even booting windows. Just use your XP CD and do the repair prompt and have it build another boot.ini ---------- I gave up on sigs. As all the beatings from the abusive mods are starting to hurt and leave nasty bruises. |

If you have not already rebooted your computer, be sure the file is definitely missing by following the following steps:
Open My Computer from desktop Navigate to C: From the menu bar at the top, select Tools > Folder Options Select the View tab Uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files" Click OK
This will allow you to see boot.ini if it is there in the root directory. If it is not, try the following:
Click Start Select Run Type msconfig Select the BOOT.INI tab
Use this tool to scan for installed operating systems and boot structure, and it should create a proper boot.ini for you.

Hmm, I'm on Windows XP Pro SP2, and on mine, a boot.ini tab doesn't even display on msconfig if the file isn't present in C:\. Yours autogenerates a boot.ini if it's not present? Neat!

Because CCP has a "boot.ini" in the root of their install folder. The installer programmer almost certainly intended to delete boot.ini but instead deleted \boot.ini
It's a silly mistake, and easy to make (especially when pressured by 200,000 users who want to get back to their Veld roids as quickly as possible, despite the fact that you're changing a great deal of the programming of the world's largest gaming supercomputer), but still, obviously, quite deadly.

Edited by: CCP Lingorm on 06/12/2007 07:49:39 If you have a missing boot.ini here is another solution.
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Copy the above code into notepad and save it to "c:\boot.ini" Start > Run "msconfig" Go to the boot.ini tab and click "Check all boot paths"
This will then go down the list and check each of the lines to see if it is valid for you. You will get a popup telling you if any of the lines is Invalid and asking if you want to remove it. Click yes. At the end of all the popups you should be left with a working boot.ini
msconfig WILL NOT rebuild your boot.ini if you do not have one. It will only validate you exsisting boot.ini

I'm 100% sure... I deliberately tried this on a separate machine (we have over a half dozen working Pc's in my household... go figure right?) and it worked fine. XP SP 2 does NOT allow the deletion of the boot.ini file. And even if it is deleted, it stores a backup that it will load instead.
Either that or my PC has self evolved somehow... :P

Better not risk it, you can just download the full premium client and install that instead, it doesn't play around with your boot.ini

Well it seems this was on the test server as well. I have as of yet not downloaded the prem content on my main eve install. I have however installed the prem stuff on the sisi install last night, and had yet not rebooted.
I guess that perhaps the stuff on the test server changed a bit between test and live, not a good idea. Makes testing invalid.

Use some Linux LiveCD distribution. Most of them allow to mount and edit NTFS partitions. You will have to manually create and edit boot.ini file but it should work.

As stated (in greater detail) in my thread on the Test Forum...
I run a MacBook Pro with Boot Camp, and got hit with this issue early today before the information about it came to light. On reboot, my OS was so borked that I had to delete my Boot Camp partition and repartition to reinstall windows... only to find out that I couldn't repartition because my Root had somehow been set to Invisible.
A couple hours of searching and some Terminal crunching later, I fixed my hard drive problem, only to find out that I still can't reinstall Windows because my CD-ROM drive no longer works.
Needless to say, my laptop is going to the nearest Apple store for repairs tomorrow. You guys gonna pay the bill for that for me? No? Damn, didn't think so. Thanks a lot, CCP.

I would like to state, for the record.
XP Service Pack 2 should be immune to this... the boot.ini does not appear, but windows should load from the backup. I have re-tested it TWICE now, and can confirm it. Either my PC has self evolved and is able to heal itself, or it works. Period.
Considering I tried it on a second PC, and my corpmates have tried this, I can safely give this a 100% YES SP2 fixes this problem.
And yes, it was a simple typo... how I don't know. This didn't happen on SiSi...
