Thanks.

If you can get to a prompt and access the drives, navigating to the directory where the boot.ini file is, and typing "copy boot.ini c:\" without quotes should copy the boot.ini file to the correct location. simply restart after that. To get to the prompt, you're most likely going to need a boot disk on a 3.5, which you should be able to create or download just about anywhere at another computer.
Won't happen unless he's unfortunate enough to have a fat32 file system - MS DOS has no clue what NTFS is.
yeah I forgot. The CD-rom should still be getting power though, I don't know why a bootable disk wouldn't work. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." (Hurray temp sig!) |

If you have successfully turned your computer off and on then you don't have anything to fix in the first place.
If you have not turned it off out of fear and want to check for the boot tile, then go to the root of your drive and then on the top back click tools > folder options > view > and then switch the radio button to "show hidden files and folders" and also uncheck "hide protected operating system files". After doing that, see if you can find a "boot" file in that root directory. If there is none there, then go to the windows folder in the root directory, then the pss folder in that. Copy and paste the "boot.ini.backup" file into the root directory, then rename it to "boot" (you don't need to type .ini because the file is already listed like that, and if you add it yourself it will treat it like a name of the file and then your computer won't recognize it). After doing that, go back and reset the radio button and checkbox you changed earlier.

OK i want to check if i wont have a problem. i followed the instructions given by CCP Pete. I followed the process from the microsoft website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022/
i have rebooted my pc twice to check. All loads fine except before windows loads up i get a very quick Invalid Boot.ini file. message but my windows xp works.
I want to know if this is going to be a big problem and is it worth using the xp OS disk to repair windows?
Test a bit more please CCP next time. Otherwise awesome expansion

Apparently it's "good enough," but I'd run MSCONFIG and check the boot.ini tab.

Okay, I cannot boot my computer up now, I get the boot.ini and the hll.dll error (or whatever it is). I do not have any Windows XP installation disks (since my computer came with the OS already installed), nor can I create any 3.5" floppy boot disks, since I don't have access to any computers that can write to 3.5" disks.
What do I do now?

Hmmm.
I download and update and play for a couple hours with no problem then I shut down and go to bed. Then I wake up and I see all this about not rebooting, all the while I have already shut my computer down. Does CCP make house calls? I expect them to come fix my computer if it doesn't work when I get home from the office.

Edited by: Scarlett Harlot on 06/12/2007 20:34:45 My Two ISK..
I am truly upset that this issue was discovered after most people had already downloaded/upgraded Eve Trinity and logged for the evening. I am even more upset that this issue came to my attention early this morning while at work checking the boards. I felt so damn frustrated knowing I could not do anything about it till I arrived home. I understand mistakes BUT this one is a big one. How many tens or hundreds of thousands of customers are currently without the use of their PC at all or have been put in this situation (most whom I would say logged off) trying to rebuild a boot.ini? CCP will either do something to make this up to their customer base or loose costomers... no way around it.
I did log off and did loose my boot.ini file. By some blessing I was able to boot my system... and I spent the last hour researching and then rebuilding a "working" boot.ini. The frustration and stress many people are feeling right now needs to be addressed... not just a clinical fix. Remember - no customers - no income.
As for me, I love the game and will continue to play. For CCP, mistakes happen but get your **** together this a major league foul up. You have a loyal group of fans you need to repair your reputation with...

Well you have a few options. You can download a bootable CD from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm on another computer, burn it, and use that to restore the file, or you can look for any other WinXP CD that a friend might have etc and use that. The bootdisk would probably be the easiest way, but you need the replacement files on something so you can add them in again as I don't believe the boot disks can repair it, they can only get you to a prompt you can use to copy the files from a disk or some such. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" I can confirm that this is not true. The bug affects all versions of XP.
Effects xp x64 as well.
This "bug" affected all versions of Windows XP (32, 64, etc.) but not Vista (or win2k from what I know). It affected you whether you ran as a limited account or as an admin. It didn't care about Antivirus programs, firewalls, etc. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that you're "ok" if you had an update or something like that.
The only thing SP2 did for you is still boot without the boot.ini AS LONG AS your windows install was a pure vanilla one(default directory, first drive & partition)

restoring the xp os if your boot ini has been erased should be an easy task is you have a genuine copy of win xp(i know that some of you out there do..he he) simply throw the disk in the drive and reboot. when the install screen options comes up just select repair and not install. it should reinstall your windows and keep all your progs, with files in tact. though this will admittedly restart your freakin coutdown to oblivion 30 day notice but if you activated it over the phone you shouldnt have to answer to the microsquish inquisition.

I have the CD that came with my system, but after following everything, and now having three different windows choices that don't work when I boot, is there any way to install windows but keep all my old data?
I know I'll have to reinstall everything, but at least I could use the computer.

As long as you don't try to install another operating system and use XP's bootloader for it, it should all be good.

I agree this is a accident and from working testing games i know this can easily happen. I love eve and i wont stop playing.
People you DONT have to reinstall the whole of windows. just do a repair.

Despite the apology, I think that it is a shame that CCP has not made a post to this thread for over 15 or so pages. CCP, If you are really sincere about fixing this mess, why is there not a single person replying QUICKLY to all this anguish on this this thread? Why do you not have a free dos boot image that will repair the boot.ini already as a download on the the site? I am sorry but it does not appear to me that you are working all that hard given the severity of the problem among your user base.

Hmm, I don't think that I know anyone who has a WinXP CD (I've asked around, and most people are in the same boat that I'm in, in that they had the OS factory installed).
What replacement files are you talking about that would need to be transferred?

If you don't, replace it before you reboot, then proceed to follow the rest of step 1 ala forgetting about it and just playing the game. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?"
