It may have been and accident but I've spent over 7 hours at this point trying to fix my computer and nothing is working. I've done everything they have suggested and more, I'm not completely ******** when it comes to these things either. CCP has screwed me and I am pretty fed up. I can't imagine really feeling like playing eve if I can't get my computer to run or if I have to format anything

Unforgivable
this is the final blow bmo
WOW posted on the 3rd of Dec and not edited. Observed on singularity by a regular player, and as quickly as mods lock threads for being off topic (he was in the wrong forum, should have been game development, however to his credit it was an Issue) this could have saved everyone a major headache. ---------------------------------

i mean ... we all made those mistakes, i admit it. but then we sucked it up, reinstalled dos and learned from it. 10 years ago....
no really, sorry for the flames, but youre either bull****ting us, or youre very irresponsible.
ccp might have screwed up big time, yeah, i dont really care. but what you (supposedly) are doing is much much worse

Sweet jesus ......... finally got a hold of an OS disk from someone and followed the instructions listed on Microsoft's web page for " missing and/or corrupt hal.dll file ". With a bit of patience and double checking on my typing errors, I made it through successfully. If you can NOT reboot just follow those instructions and you will be on the track back to normalcy !!!
Oh and CCP ......... ' Smell My Finger ' !!!

I haven't read through the entire 70 pages so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I deemed it important enough to post...
If you are running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2 and you can't find your boot.ini file but it keeps telling you it's there, you may have missed a step in unhiding the file that I didn't see mentioned (though like I said I could have missed it). You need to go in your root drive where boot.ini is supposed to be. Tools>Folder Options then in the "View" tab go down to "Hidden Files and Folders", and below that after checking "Show Hidden Files and Folder" there is another option below that for "Hide Protected Operating System Files". Uncheck that one and click the "Apply" button and you should be able to see your boot.ini file if it's really there.
Just for the paranoid people who don't trust anything that Windows tells them. ---------------

Edited by: TazzieDevil on 07/12/2007 05:41:47 I have found even for those that do have the boot file still have problems were you can log on and start to play and then after about 15 minutes you loose connection or it freezes and then looses connection and you need to reload into game again. i have been having to this for the last several hours. I cant put a petition in due to the fact that they dont allow you enough petitions for situations like this come on fix the problem please so that we can play what we have payed for. I have even uninstalled game and reinstalled it to find the problem is still there wtf? i am sick of paying for games that ppl f&^%& with to much and screw it up.

For those of you having bluescreen problems: notice that the upgrade blew away your settings, and sound is enabled! Just disable sound and see if the problems go away again.
Scary bug, this. Logged on today after having played a bit yesterday to a missing hal.dll. Did a google on 'eve online trinity virus', found the fix, and all is good once again. =)
Those of you calling for the dev/QA guys responsible to be fired are a bit out of line. Let me tell you an anecdote to put things into perspective.
Many years ago I worked at a medical devices company whose server end ran on big, heavy, expensive fault tolerant Unix variants. Having redundant hardware didn't protect the poor customers from a script which ran as root to create (and later unlink) a file in /dev named /dev/$USER_DEVICE, where the value for USER_DEVICE was entered at a prompt by the user...
Translation for the unix illiterate: unlink is the equivalent of delete AND deltree commands. /dev is the equivalent of windows/system32 for a unix box -- it doesn't contain any executable code, but every device on the system is accessed through that directory. So when the users hit <enter> at the prompt, instead of deleting a file in /dev it removed the directory instead, and thusly the ability to access every piece of hardware on that machine. The same machine being used by every doctor and nurse at a 1000+ bed hospital. Good times were to be had by all.
So, losing a bit of time restoring your gaming PC doesn't seem like such a big deal now, does it?

crossposting to help out:
My Windows Media Center Edition was affected but luckily I got someone ingame to give me the text from a compatible system...seeing as how I don't have the disks(Ebay-shopper ]/- ) I would have been buttfecked. I made a copy just in case too, since my backup did not exist(turn on your system restore)
My bug with not being able to log into premium but only classic caused me to get install the whole client over...it deleted my new boot file....CCP plz take that link down. My backup saved me but that 's bad sportsmanship now. I did enough damage control ingame to warrant you guys giving me a some free gametime, but FIX THAT IMMEDIATELY! Please...Confused
btw the boot for Media Center is:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Enjoy, fellow victims. The WoW people are never gonna let us hear the end of thisugh

Sorry for the LOSS of your /dev directory contents.
Technician to fix the computer that screwed up and not having a relative to fix it because you're a gamer and unfortunately not able to obtain IT professional status (haha): $50
Paying for the subscription: $14
Finding out that installing something from a game to make it look better just costed you more money then anticipated: Priceless
For everything else: there is someone who can always beat your story because murphy's law never sleeps.
Enough said, don't tell people stories about how it could be worse because its not going to make them IT professionals and able to fix their own problems and restore game saves they probably spent endless hours....
it was a massive mishap we can learn from, don't stop playing EVE because of it. They learned their lesson and probably learned that naming may need to go through the QA process and most times boot.ini is not a problem except in this case... booteve.ini perhaps. Worst case scenario in that event... C:\booteve.ini haha.

read carefully it wipes out the c:\ and teh second partiton all comes in operable including my hd linked to my comp by usb it made all crash and my usb hd wont work at all no with customer info, it ran off of boot.ini along with windows ,
Therefore cust data and web site lsot not ran from same computer just linked to it game cannot technically access info but if info on main hd is toasted for the shadow copy of windows so is teh usb hd.! both had to be formatted and reinstalled. ccp better start crediting massivly S.*hit, due to the simple fact tehy knew way before hand and then released it early without beta testing it fully first and ******* all us and it is illegal in the us due to the fact its neglect, and frivilant software if it can crash a system or cause damage to a system not of their own then by the computer piracy and crimes act of 1983 its considerd a computer crime or illicit virus" frivilous in meanings and a ****up on their behalf if anyof us ever have to pay for a eve subscription again or a ****** up patch ill sue there ass.and im in the law buisness.

There is something called due dilligance, I really don't think this was followed here. Because if it was installed even on one Windows Machine with XP, which I assume a great number of their subscribers use, they would of found this tiny blunder. As well to have somebody post about it previous and only get blasted about being in the wrong thread. You would also assume that people with common sense would have forward that 'critical' information to the game developers.
I have been trying hard to get a friend to play this game and all he can do is show me many time's when dev's have used exploits for their friends benefits, all be it they have been released from CCP, and now something as basic as using a windows system file name as a gaming file name. Is that not programing 101 on the top 5 things not to do??? I was in a panic this morning as I did not reboot my machine, my friend (remember I was trying to get a guy to play this game??) forwarded me a link to slash dot about my Eve and the effects last night patch may have had on my machine. I looked for a number to call, a live chat to join, or surf this forum to find the answer. And I could not. I had to rely in him and myself to find the answers, pull the plug on my PC and Prey it came back up again.
Will I quit playing this game?? Probably not, do I feel that some sort of compensation should be given back to the community?? Absolutely. Some sort of 'token' compensation would go a long way to eleviate some of the just concerns people have and the trust that was lost in part by following simple, upgrading protocols.

My fathers a lawyer and if he wrote something so poor as this he would be disbarred from the bar association. Try again. Second, learn about computers, boot.ini does not destroy partitions it means the boot information for WINDOWS when booting is missing. Running a second operating system or LiveCD that autodetects harddrives or even has support for NTFS file system will find the partitions integrity is fine. The failure with your USB harddrive is your own, you probably misconfigured if you even tried to configure the BIOS. Most system "admins" now adays forgot to set removable media as primary boot sources and not the harddrive so that in case you run into said issue where it can find a master boot record but then screws up it won't halt the system.
I admit that CCP made a mistake, however sir, your post and your knowledge of which you are speaking about are worse off then they could have made it.
You think this is the first time you've seen someone install "AS IS" software and try to sue a company because it messed up? Read the fine print, the installation processes is not fully automated so you can make a choice to install it or not. Good luck my friend, and god speed with your IT and LAW degrees.

This is not a flame to CCP.
Someone at CCP made an error and it wasn't caught by Quality Control. Oh noes.
Fix the problem and get over it. There's plenty of info about that now. It's not catastrophic except for the noobs who can't be arsed to do anything at all.
If I hear one more person whine about their "important work" trashed by CCP's error, I'm gonna puke. Stop putting your critical data on your darned game PC! Didn't you learn anything in that 101 level computer orientation class?
Also, the most basic search will reveal how to fix the boot.ini file. It's not hard at all. If you think it is, sell your computer in order to save the rest of us our sanity.
Thanks.

First of all, the Bill of Rights is not a document drawn up to declare whats a crime or not. Its main and only purpose is declare your rights and freedoms.
Unfortunately there is one problem with your analogy. The problem is when a lawyer argues a case in court to the jury on a crinimal case they need to prove motive and intent. Not only could you not prove they had a reason to interrupt their clients who pay them, as well as they intended for the damage to occur. Without motive or intent you will not have a case.
Second of all, if there is an autoreboot option its in the system configuration I believe under system restore and that only pertains to blue screens AKA Fatal stop errors where the system cannot recover. If you are rebooting due to that, your problems are more numerous then this.
If you came back and your computer was jacked due to miss configuration and it was XP, grab the disk and system restore for starters. Failure to do so makes me wonder who gets certifications. "Bill fo rights" homie?
Second of all, intent comes into play even with the 1983 Computer Crimes Act. You cannot convict for criminal reason without proving intent.
I would like to thank Google for my research.

Applied Patch
Turned comp off after.

I have no-where to recover a copy of boot.ini.
