My heart goes out to all CCP. You guys are great, and your response to the issue has been fast. Nevertheless:
Quote: WTF 1: Naming a game data file "boot.ini"
WTF 2: Accidentally adding a backslash, resulting in the patch deleting "\boot.ini", aka "C:\boot.ini".
WTF 3: This getting through QA and ending up in a patch run by up to two hundred thousand people.
WTF 4: The fact that Windows allows applications to overwrite boot.ini.

I was in a training class for communication routing equipment. My instructor was showing us commands on the interface... then said now NEVER EVER EVER type "del *.*" as he typed it in. He turned around and explained how it deletes the entire routing database and it would cause hugh problems. He spun back around as hit the enter key. And just stopped, turned pale white and said ****.
Comms weren't fully restored for 6 hours.

So, I should be OK right? As long as I haven't accepted the Premium download?

Anybody have the idea 'till now for an SABOTAGE??? I think that this one is too BAD to have been just a mistake. This is to hard to believe that they can be so lousy.
Hope that is an error made with a purpose to denigrate CCP and the new "face" of EVE...
Sorry about that. (I am using MacBookPro and another machine with XP x64, so, that doesn't effect me... I hope!) __________________________________________________ Everything for everybody!

I can only presume that if you have both Windows and EVE installed on the same drive and partition that Windows Media Edition uses a similiar boot method to Vista, which is run through x:\boot\

I have dualboot, XP and Vista. XP is on partiton 1, Vista on 2. EVE is installed on the E partition. When I upgraded I was in Vista. So that means I should be safe, yes?

I don't know what caused the issue in the first place, and to be honest, I can't think of what they could have done to cause it (but it wouldn't be the first time something completely random has happened, Windows does weird stuff sometimes.) The bigger issue is this: regardless of what CCP did, IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TOUCH THE FILE IN THE FIRST PLACE. If Windows came even close to being a decent OS, it wouldn't allow arbitrary modification of system critical files without confirmation. Granted the average ****** (i.e. 99% of the people that have access to computers) would just click accept anyway, but it should have at least come up saying something was trying to mess with it. Windows is the only OS I know of to ever allow ANYTHING to touch system files without permission.
Sorry for the rant, but yeah, it shouldn't have happened in the first place, but the blame isn't all on CCP either, since if MS did their job right for once it wouldn't have been possible in the first place. |

for the computer illiterate, an illustrated guide to fixing this problem on windows XP. note that this guide assumes you have not yet restarted your computer. if you have, that's a whole other story.
** note: all links are pictures. if the text instructions alone are making your head spin, the pictures should help clear up some of the confusion **
STEP 1
hit your start menu button, it should look something like this. click on the "Run" tab, and you should see this window pop up. type "cmd" (without quotations) into that box, like what it shows in the picture, and hit ok. you should see something like this. don't worry if the text doesn't exactly match up with the picture; that's irrelevant.
now type
find "" C:\boot.ini
(with the quotation marks) and hit enter. two things can happen here:
a) ---------- C:\BOOT.INI shows up. - congratulations, you're not affected! you can now reboot safely.
b) File not found - C:\boot.ini shows up. - you've been affected. keep reading!
STEP 2
go to your start menu again, right click "My Computer", and click on Properties. it should look like this. note the part circled in red; REMEMBER WHAT IT SAYS THERE. it might say "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" like in the picture, or "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. whatever it says there, write it down somewhere. we're going to need it soon.
STEP 3
go to your start menu and click on "Run" again like we did in STEP 1. this time, instead of typing in "cmd" like we did above, type in "notepad" and hit enter. you should now see this. input the following lines into the blank space:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="<<<SEE NOTE BELOW>>>" /fastdetect
now, VERY IMPORTANT: see where it says <<<SEE NOTE BELOW>>>? take that and replace it with what we took down in STEP 2. the quotation marks stay; depending on what you took down in STEP 2 the following pictures should help:
I got "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" in Step 2. I got "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" in Step 2.
when that's done, click on "File" in the top left corner, and on the drop-down menu, click "Save As...". you should see a standard save window; select (C:) from the "Save in:" drop-down menu on the top. at the bottom, type in "boot.ini" under "File name:", and under the "Save as type:" drop-down menu select "All Files". again, use the picture for reference if necessary. finally, hit "Save" then close notepad. you're almost there!
STEP 4
go to the start menu, "Run", type in "cmd", and hit enter (as in STEP 1). in the window that pops up, type:
cd c:\
and hit enter. a new line should display that simply says "C:\>". now type:
attrib +s +h +a boot.ini
and hit enter. another new "C:\>" should pop up again. you're done!
STEP 5
this is for verification only. go to start menu and "Run", and type in "msconfig" and hit enter. follow the instructions in this picture. if it doesn't say you're OK, post up.
last note:
- this assumes C:\ is system partition - stole some ideas from this thread. thanks to them too. - am i missing anything?

Been a while since I messed around with my grub.ini, but if it gets deleted it shouldn't matter (not to mention it isn't stored in / anyway, so it's not like a mistake like this would get it targeted.) As i recall, you load the grub.ini into the boot sector itself, or another partition, don't you (again, it's been a while)? The one in the regularly accessible directory is just the reference for you to modify, but then you have to reload it into the boot section. You're okay with grub, it's a file related to EVE called boot.ini that caused this whole mess up!

For XP Media Center Edition your boot.ini file should read exactly this:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Hope this helps.

Last time something like this happened, i had to reinstall to get my dual boot working again. As XP would not come up as an option to boot in, only Vista.
Anyone running a dual boot ?
I have Vista on one 1 HD, XP on another and all games on a sep partition to the OS's ----

this reminds me of the story from a CTO of a large company (that shall not be named and no it's not CCP).
that company had developed some linux software and were testing it out before release only to find out it completely messed up the operating system, upon further testing of the issue they found out that when the software was deleting it's temporary files it was doing a command equivalent to "rm -rf /" instead of deleting from the temp directory ^^
I'm a computer whiz and was not affected by this (always keep a backup of your important system files)

And yes my poor little machine was a victim of Mr. Murphy's sloppy typing.

ok now this is about the worst thing ive ever seen. Alot of people without the technical savy are screwed by this, it will cost money for them to get their computers back up and going. No doubt the technical people they take it too will overcharge them and screw them over or worse tell them the data is unrecoverable. CCP u should be ashamed and first of all even an apology would be a good start!
Shame on you CCP, Shame!
Do you not test things anymore? obviously not!
Shame on you CCP, Shame!
You have also dealt with it very poorly

Hi there,
i've read 4 pages and I hope that question is new. I have 2 (two) OS on my system. Both Windows XP. Don't ask why.
Should be there any problem with the boot.ini because of that two OS ? Or can I make it like written before? At this time my computer is still running (I hope) and downloading the premium upgrade. I'm at work and want to be sure that I can fix my boot.ini as explained also with my two OS.
Thanks in advance.

Have you patched it already? If not, the backup you create of boot.ini will be fine to restore after you have patched it (even though the new patch does not delete boot.ini)

its from two days ago. thank god for SOMETHING causing a restore point.
i had a customized boot.ini i made through nLite a year ago and i dont have access to the custom windows install disk right now... i would have been boned.
edit: this needs to be in the first post as an easy fix. most people with a big box brand computer will have customized boot.ini files and be screwed. they need to do this. also, its more of a non-techy friendly solution.
