Originally by: Meili Qiuyue Still in my class for the evening, and happy to have my laptop, I wonder - how did most of you get your start in this corner of the EVE Universe? I've heard it said that to be an effective trader one needs hundreds of millions - after trying my hand at it for about two weeks, I understand why. But for most of us, the money had to come from somewhere EULA-friendly =D Mining? Ransoms? Missions? GTC?
For me, and to kick off discussion, my investment capital came in the form of just under 200 Million, lent to me by an RL friend who found his wonderfully-insured Abaddon on the wrong end of a Rokh. After his defeat, he explained to me that he would be taking a break from EVE for awhile. I asked him if I could have his insurance pay to try out this 'trading' thing I'd read about, and to my pleasant surprise he agreed. (Of course, I'm gonna have to pay him back someday, but I intend on making his money count).
I wonder, if given enough time could I turn one battleship into three or four? (or more?) Does anyone have an interesting story about how they got their start? Or, was it all through hard work, flying to the State War Academy in the snow, uphill both ways?
Meili
started by watching Jerikia, chatting with him, and following his example somewhat.
edit: oh yeah, and a few strategically placed jump clones in various 0.0 regions, some social skills for quicker mission bonuses, research agents, a little mining and shopping around to build goodies for some really good BPC/BPO deals, and a crap load of buy orders in out of the way areas which i'd check on occasionally (normally alt toons), and of course, taking advantage of "bring me X" missions, by stockpiling the needed goods at the agents' stations.

I lurked this forum for ages before I properly started anything.
When I first got my Iteron I would borrow funds from my corp mates to buy minerals and move them to hubs for sale.
My "break" came from when I realised I could make proper money out of trading and sold shares to get me some capital to start trading. Of course that's also when I found out trading brought insane amounts of brain meltdowns as well :D

I remember the first time I hit 1/2 Bill in assets, this was back in late 2003 when 1/2 Bill was a decent amount of isk.
Made that isk the hard (er.....not exactly) way spending 2 hrs each day right after downtime trading Electronic Parts in The Forge. Back then you could make an easy 20M in less than two hours if you were fast enough to buy up the orders right after downtime.
Those were the good old days

Edited by: Mai Mailynn on 16/12/2007 02:14:52 I took a gamble and spent 90% of my isk on 5 million hydrogen isotopes at under 150 isk each, loaded them into a freighter, and solo snuck it out to 0.0 and sold it on the market in a highly populated logistically-challenged 0.0 alliance area, for 500 each. Sold out in 2 weeks for just under a 2 billion isk profit, more than doubling my net worth. Repeated that process twice more over the next 2 months for similar effects.
That's what got me the capital to do more passive isk earning.
A few months later I won a Wolf bpo near the end of the lottery, and promptly sold it for just under 8 billion, which put my net worth at the time to around 15 billion.
Now I have around 10 billion isk worth of invention / manufacturing assets. I do my invention out in 0.0, and once a week run the bpcs to empire and set manufacturing jobs, and put the previous week's finishing jobs on the market, so only deal with the whole thing once a week.
During slow times for my alliance I do various PvE things to occupy myself, generally exploration because it's more entertaining, but as soon as people are logging on and it's pvp time, I'm off to have some fun, with the comfort of knowing I can fly whatever I feel like flying, and it's no big deal if I lose it. For pretty minimal maintainance, I have about a 5 billion a month income.

Here's how much and from whom I made ISK between 21st of July 2006 and 4th of February 2007. Most of these required little more than a short conversation. Values for items are based on market value at the time of scam.

I have always know that stupidity is overwhelming in this world. But that much, inside just a few days(See the picture for reference) is disturbing.

Well, unless buying up heavy water and then convincing CCP to change the Rorqual industrial core to use heavy water counts...
(not that the price jumped by anything like I expected, oh well)
Anyways, to answer the OP...
I started with a "Stupidity Farm".
I put up very low price buy orders in Amarr newbie space for shield hardeners, and they sold them to me buy the hundred. Then I would scoop them up and haul them to Jita to sell to the recyclers.
It wouldn't be worth doing it now for me in newbie space, but in certain 0.0 areas a Stupidity Farm still works great, especially in areas where a new alliance has just invaded and stupidity is rife.

This is just Riethe trying to assuage his conscience, if he feels everyone is a scammer then he will feel much better about himself being one. If he were to think most people had high morals then he'd have to accept that his were far below most people's.

Hmn interesting topic brings back good memorys time to share my story;
It all started after I reactivated my account, (50days earlier playtime), and had virtually zer= assets, (gave all my stuff away). Anyhow, some old corp buddies helped me back on the road by giving me 20m in stuff. And started trading with that on high value items, t2 stuff most of it was still worth more then 5m a piece back then + no invention taking place, so there where bigger price differences between places. I netted a couple of 100's millions of isk, to much to use for the basic sell order to buy order I did.
I decided that I would concentrate on the 3 main trade hubs of eve, Jita, Rens and Ours, compiled a list of 80 items to trade with and made a very complex excell sheet to compute the best trades, and volume to be bought so I only needed to fill it with the hubs prices.
Within 3 months my wallet was sitting at 4bil isk, but due to reseeded t2 prints prices on t2 modules and the profit margins on them where dropping, so it was time to change bis. ,took a 3 month break living a bit of my wealth while I figured out how to make my riches bigger. I decided to step into the t2 component market big time, with the mission to take over one of the races t2 component markets.
So it began and I started the first 10 production lines last year march and upped that to 50 production lines within 3 months. And still extending that now, Which yieled to a 15 member big alt corp which has currently a weekly turnover of 6bil isk and a production rate of 50.000 components a day.
I think key issue to make keep expanding and growing is to evolve on time to market more suited to your ammount of capital and regulary searching for more profitable ventures. I think that upto 90% of my playtime goes to finding long term uppertunitys. And always have the next project going to trow isk into.

I had spent years running missions as my main source of income - mostly level 3's. In the later months I had enough skills to start soloing level 4 missions which brought in a steady income.
About 6 months ago I started trading seriously and made my first Billion shortly there after. I was lucky enough to find a nice level 4 mission hub and supplied it with a constant supply of drones and modules. It really surprised me how much more profitable trading was, particularly that a lot of it was passive income.
I now run missions only for fun or standing - trading being my main source of income. I also get some income from a few select IPO shares, and my own corp shares (production and mining) - enough so that I can afford to pay my account buying GTCs and afford any ship and most fittings when I want them.
As has been said a few times above by Shad and Ric (and others) - I began making real ISK when I stopped running missions :)
I have never owned a T2 Blueprint.
I have never run a scam of any kind.
I've just learnt how to play the game and enjoyed trading.

I made my first 5 million mining. That took a while. I traded up from there and have made about 75% of my ISK from trading.

I was returning from a couple of level 2 missions in a Caracel when I noticed an unusual amount of pilots outside the station. It turns out to be two warring corporations, and as missiles, drones and other means of destruction started flying about all around me, I realized the opportunity that had landed right on my doorstep. I quickly docked, purchased a frigate, fitted it with a cargo expander and an afterburner and started stealing loot. I got about 50-60m worth of t2 and various named modules, most of which I sold. The ISK I got from this became my starting capital as I took up trading.
