The main problem with them isn't their range but the fact that they go slow. It's so awful that if you have a missile-only ship you're dead if anything faster than a Cruiser starts to fire at you due to lead-time and tracking delays(2-3 seconds to catch up is more than the fuel left(!)
Proposal: All missile launchers can fit ammunition of one size class smaller.
That is, large can't fit the other large, but a large launcher could fit heavy assaults. (note - ROF is still the slower heavy rate)
It's simple and at least gives us a chance to switch around ammo a bit to compensate. Since the launchers have no tracking or damage or range modifiers, they're just dumb tubes, so this makes logical sense as well. (not - ship bonuses would also no apply - a Raven fitted with Torpedoes or Cruises wold get NO bonus while firing heavy assaults.

This would give missile users an advantage over turret users big time. Right now they are even in terms of close range/dps/unable to hit fast/close orbiting targets.
Misses being the end all weapon is noob. it needed to be fixed. Just like all close range combat ships, fast ships pwn you.
Caldari should be no exception.
And if we took your suggestion (and the others that keep popping up), everyone would now fly a raven instead, because it can hit ALL targets, so you would solo better than any other race's bs (plus you have a 30k range, which beats out gallante blaster setups).

would be evily overpowered, then you could take out even hac's without difficulties in a bs that is set up with siege launchers.. that would be wrong.

Edited by: Plekto on 08/12/2007 00:06:53 You miss the point where they would gain ZERO bonuses and have the same firing time.
14.4 seconds plus 0% damage or range bonus, PLUS all the negatives hitting a smaller ship entails(unless you have max skills or just about)... You would be doing essentially stock newbie damage as a last resort.
It's more than fair. Large guns on a BS will hit a smaller HAC for at least *some* damage with good skills. As it is, Torpedos are so slow as to run out of fuel before they can hit(making all the skills in the world as if they didn't exist).

Ok, well first off I never said that missiles were the end all, nor did I imply it. I simply pointed out that now Torps can only be used in very close range. Every race's ships bring something different to the table, each race has bonus' for weapons, or electronics, whatever. Ships that are gunboats give bonus for Hybrid, or Projectile weapons. So the Raven; which is a fleet ship, gets what makes it a good PvE taken away. No it is not the range, I'm simply asking to have the flight time restored. My question is about how skills are aquired. You have multiple pilots (three) for a single account, why can only one (1) pilot recieve training at a time? Meaning if you start training pilot "A" and |

Torps are too slow to hit small ships. The range isn't the problem. The time to get to that maximum range is. They are currently slower than even today's cruise missiles.(3600mph/1650m/sec or so) And that's fighting its way through an atmosphere for hundreds of miles.
Evrey weapon should physically hit its target if it is in range. It should be up to skills to see if you missed or if it did any damage.(ship size and other calculations as well of course)
ie - your Rail Guns hit. It may be 0 damage, but that's skills and a bit of luck. Being able to so easily outrun torpedos is the problem. We're talking bomb slow here for the heavy t2s - 1000m/sec and a flight time of 6 seconds. That won't even hit a large drone, whatever damage it does or doesn't do aside...
