It was an interesting thing to be watching from the sidelines, as it were, while at Trion. To see CCP react, to see Hilmar and others own up to a sense that the community has something to say, and that against a backdrop of Arab uprisings in the Middle East, weGÇÖve got Occupy Wall Street, and weGÇÖve got EVE Online. Where else does this happen in the online world?

I don't care how many people you have on WoD as long as CCP does things right and fast. They did Crucible right.
But people are expecting other things in the future. CCP has yet to rebuild the trust they lost with Incarna.
So, don't forget, because we don't. |

CCP Hellmar... stop running your company into the ground. If you want success today, you MUST specialize in something. Stick with what you know, and do it better than anyone else.
Eve is what made you. NEVER forget that.
My recommendation to you is give CCP one focus, one goal.
Sell off WoD NOW.

Comparing our online 'protests' to the Occupy or Middle East movements tells me what a naive person David Reid is.
We are a consumer base that needed to correct the faulty path of the product in which we all invested. They are fighting for their rights of life.
And, I'm sorry but DUST is only going to be selling so many copies because most people have refused to buy a PS3 or has already gotten rid of theirs. Again, a statement suggesting DUST may be the biggest game of 2012 based on naive hopes. It simply CAN'T be the biggest game because Sony is your developer. PC Gaming != Console Gaming.
I haven't even enlisted in the military and I'd say my outsider expectations are more grounded than CCP's new CMO. |

The players of Eve are NOT making Eve the biggest game in the world. Seems to me many are quite content to settle for stagnation purely out of self-interest using a business acumen learned by swapping bubble-gum cards.
On topic: WoD isn't about Eve - but vampires would be really funny if they were unleashed in Goon space - Vampires v Zombies Bring back Eve. OUR Eve.

I have to agree with the above sentiment.
Using the same principals and tech that EVE has to create another MMO universe is smart... always has been. It's simply the same tech and methodology applied to a different genre.
They are sticking with what they do best in this case... DUST is much more of a reach for them than WOD will ever be. Even on that front, you'll notice that DUST uses many mechanics that are virtually (pun intended) identical to EVE.. just translated into something that will work on a console.
There is wisdom in diversifying your offers while still working from a well tested base... and while troll speak calls it "using EVE as a beta for WOD" in truth sharing common tech for all of their offerings is simply efficient use of resources. When I check troll in the dictionary, it has a photo shopped picture of you standing somewhere in the vicinity of a point.
Also, I can kill you with my brain. |

I would like it more that EVE is used as beta and keep that technology for its growth too then that EVE don't get anything from that development. Some ppl think that if EVE don't get WiS that there will be more DEVs for FiS... maybe few, yes, but they will build that tech regardless will it be used in EVE or not. So... lest use the best of CCP have - all of it. |

He's a marketing guy. I never said he was a bad marketing guy, in fact comparing the extremely noticeable differences in tone between Hilmar and David shows you that Hilmar should, frankly, not be doing interviews. David's job is to promote the company and all its products, and I have no doubt that he's a heavy-hitter.
That said, the warrior-worshiping culture of the US doesn't translate well elsewhere, so few are going to be impressed by his history of travelling overseas and shooting people, or more likely as an officer sending others to shoot people. Combine that with the mind-boggling decision to compare Eve players with the Occupy movement or the Arab Spring, and you start to see how skewed and naive this guy's understanding of his audience is.
I know his type, I work with them every day. They're very slick, very impressive.
They're also painfully shallow, deceitful, and disrespectful.

Quite the contrary, most of the core tech that will power WOD is what is currently running EVE. The main difference will be that the WOD engine will be tweaked from the ground up for Avatars, where as most of the tweaking we see in EVE is devoted to enabling the massive combats and less on the physical movement aspects (ships don't have a lot of visible moving parts).
Most resource developed that will benefit WOD or DUST are or will be of benefit in EVE as well.
If you'll think back, that has always been the plan. CCP has never been secretive on this subject.

With respect, I think you totally missed the point he was making... that being the vast differences between the things listed... he was not comparing them to each other.
By the way, military accomplishments and training don't impress the American people (or anyone else for that matter) simply because he may have fired a weapon at someone. Everything else that type of experience will have given him (training, discipline, leadership, perspective) however does. But apparently his military back ground is sufficient to cause you to interpret everything he said from a very, very skewed perspective.

CCP can do what they want with their money. As far as I'm concerned.. I pay for what I have access to now, I don't pay for a future I have no control over. Thinking I should control CCP's actions with money that is no longer mine is a bit.. strange. Either pleased with current product, or you're not.. why make something more complicated than what it isn't. Some of you fabricate way too much mental drama on yourselves.
If either one takes off even reasonably well.. more revenue towards resources for EVE's dev team. |
