One rule I have failed to see in all these boards is one I recently broke, and paid dearly for.
Never Drink and Fly.
When out in space, a few seconds can mean walking away with millions in loot, or flying back to your home station in a small grey egg, or worse, waking up in a vat of goo, and wondering why you can no longer remember how to pilot your ship.
I recently ran into a situation that I would like to share in hopes you don't make the same mistake I did.
The girlfriend left for the weekend giving me the freedom to do whatever I wanted with my time. Given the circumstances, I chose to spend one particular night a the bar that is conveniently located at the bottom of my hill, a 2 minute walk at most. Some wine, and few beers and a glass of scotch or two later saw me hunting small ships around 0.4 systems. Now my character is not that well equipped, but I've got my fully fitted rifter out on the prowl. As I'm jumping from system to system, I don't notice that I've entered a 0.8. A directional scan shows a small ship sitting a few AU's away. ( cannot recall what kind of ship for obvious reasons) It was the only ship in the area and would've made a great target for a beginner such as myself to get his feet wet. Well I jumped to the stargate he was sitting by and saw the little bugger, targeted and hit the warp scrambler. Then I heard 2 pew pew's and my rifter was dust.
Had I not been drunk I would have realized that I was in 0.8 space, and on top of that, there were sentry guns and CONCORD ships behind me. There goes over a million ISK worth of guns and pirating equipment... ( I know a million ISK isn't that much in the grand scheme of things but its a lot when your barely 2 weeks in.)
LESSON: Never get drunk and try to pirate. It works in the movies (pirates, rum, you know the drill) but it only aids in making bad decisions. If you are drunk, stay in your station and chat, train skills manufacture stuff etc... One wrong move can cost you your ship and maybe even your clone.

And always keep your clone up to date. Accidents happen, even when sober.
To upgrade your clone, find a station with Medical services and hit "Upgrade Clone". Select a clone grade that keeps a few more SP than you will have in the next month or so. (Don't buy the most expensive clone unless you need it, they're expensive) Any time you die, you'll need to buy a new upgraded clone. _______________________________

This is a violation of CONCORD regulations. Violations will result in prosecution (and ship destruction) to the fullest extent allowed by law.
My condolences I could spot you a rifter and ISK if you really are that broke

Haha thanks but no big deal. A few sober missions and some ratting and I was back in business. It also forced me to re-tool my setup and actually my current is more combat versatile and actually cheaper than that one was.

Drinking and flying is the most fun when you use faction battleships.

You're in the wrong alliance?
In all seriousness, it is important to understand that booze enhances the chances for ship-loss. But also, even stone-sober players sometimes mistakenly CONCORD themselves in the heat of a chase. It happens

HA! I was out flying while smoking a fat hoober in the midst of war.
I packed my ship with as much T2 stuff I could cram in it to fly to the corp's HQ. I was doing well W'ing TZ when I fell asleep at the wheel. Woke up (literally) about 5 minutes later in my clone. Full set of +3 implants lost and (insert diety of choice) knows how much worth of T2 stuff gone.
Funny funny shtuff happens.

I've had some BAD Inevebriation-Online experiences. Bankrupted myself multiple times when I was a newb by falling asleep at the controls or making very poor decisions in cruisers without insurance. Lost some good stuff more recently too but at least I had the isk to replace it.

I've managed to stay off Eve while plastered, but I did once get podded by rats when I left my mining laser on while I went to take a leak and the rats decided to spawn JUST then. Super.

Adjusted some orders last weekend after a bar trip and accidentally put couple of extra zeros in one order. I ended up paying 57million of broker fees. ---

As to it working in the movies ...
That may be ... but IRL ... there were a number of pirates who met their end - because their last prize was carrying a lot of booze and they all got drunk. The Real Dread Pirate Roberts comes to mind. British Frigate showed up while the crew was drunk and ... they couldn't get the ship moving ... much less fight back ...
Oops.
Their are numerous historical incidences where people got drunk before a battle - specifically to psych themselves up ... but often with poor results ... The usual result was an excess of courage and a lack of common sense.
The one tactic that did seem to benefit from intoxicated warriors - was getting the Berserker's at the tip of the wedge drunk. A number of Berserker's were helped along into their Berserk state via alcohol. Of course the Berserker's all died ... but they broke the enemies lines ... and the rest of the Viking's who may or may not have been drunk benefited.
*shrug* . . .

On the bright side, at least you didn't lose a fully-faction fit Navy Raven like my CEO did, just because he went for a smoke .

I have known a mothership to be lost to drunkeness, although to be fair it was being used crazily even when the pilot was sober - You know who you are!
Fleet ops are quite fun when drunk though as you don't need to think that much if youre part of the main group. Last one that I was on I was drunk before the gang was even formed up because invites took so long. It didnt really harm my performance though - I went on to survive a doomsday attack, travel ~45 jumps, flip an outpost and put 2 POSs into reinforced all before I passed out .
Flying about solo while inebriated is not good though. I fell asleep once because of booze and time and woke up with my cov-ops uncloaked in hostile space on a gate.

Maybe we can petition CCP to introduce a breathalyser module which will prevent you from undocking if drunk ;-)
Something like this.
