Jita is obviously a very populated system, so to me it made logical sense that I should try and do some trading there. More people meant more to fulfill my buy orders, and more people to fulfill my marked up sell orders.
Apparently this was obvious to tons of other traders as well
The competition at Jita is pretty intense, and it seems to me that surely there are greener pastures elsewhere that I can trade and be confronted with a little less competition.
I would preface my question by saying that I realize no one is going to outright say "I trade in the X system, buying and selling Y"
I am merely wondering what kind of qualities you might like in a good base of operations?
Or is Jita as good as it gets
Thanks for your help =]

A highway system is nice, e.g. a system that connects to a lot of other systems, so it's likely that people will be nearby due to stargate configuration.
A high natural population, e.g. a lot of miners, ratters or mission runners that hang out in that system of their own accord generating loot and minerals instead of just passing through.
Far from another hub system.
Maybe in lowsec (0.4-0.0) or lower sec (0.7-0.5) if that's your thing, thereby capitalizing on the market of people who can't go into the higher security hub systems like Jita or Oursulaert.
Nearby lowsec so that you're nearby people who do a lot of PvP and high end missions.
That's about all I can think of. Don't get your hopes up too high about fulfilling your buy orders unless they're mineral buy orders. Most people aren't going to bother selling anything to you that they wouldn't normally just haul to a hub for a better profit, except minerals (which they can't or won't haul). You'll get some good sell orders, though. As much as you may love me, your signature must pertain to your in-game persona, and thus I must remove it. -Conuion Meow |

Ok, great, thanks for the advice.
Just to clarify, I always hear people commenting that they don't haul, they trade. This is what I am trying to accomplish myself.
Also, to get some clarification on what you said about getting my hopes up on buy orders. When you say good sell orders you are suggesting that I fulfill a sell order (buying low) and resell the item for a higher price, rather than placing a low buy order to buy low?

I just meant that people will probably buy your junk, but they won't sell you much of theirs (loot and whatnot). As much as you may love me, your signature must pertain to your in-game persona, and thus I must remove it. -Conuion Meow |

With the trading that I do, I find the opposite to be true. I suppose you can find places where either was true.

Jita system still works great even though margins can be slim at times.
Even if the sharks are in Jita, there are even more idiots floating their boats in the system. This translates to opportunity in my book.

Look around a map for bright spots with not too much market presence. Nonni has a lot of untapped potential. 70-150 pilots in local, high volume items short supply or not available, Aunenen next door is 1 cyno jump to Pure Blind/Deklein/Venal.
