Seems like a silly question but how do you actually do it, so when a fleet commander says "Mine here align to the BLAH BLAH gate please"
How do I align I usually attempt to warp to the gate and just when I have aligned I cancel the warp? But I am sure there must be a better way
Any help appreciated

find the gate or station's icon in space that you have been told to align with then double click just above the icon this will get you heading in the right direction then when the ship has finished turning hit ctrl space bar to stop the ship, you are now aligned.

That can be a bit problematic, if in a very small & fast aligning ship.
What to to is, locate the alignment destination manually. (A lot easier if you have a waypoint set (or a Fleet Broadcast) that passes through it, as there will be a yellow square box around the stargate/station/whatever.
Finding that destination, double-click to the side/top/bottom of that destination-point to start moving your ship in that general direction. You will not be 100% faced... but close enough.
Familiarty with the area will make it a lot easier, too. Knowing where to spin the camera is a great help; especially in those systems that have destination gates "up" or "down".

Just doubleclick near (not on) the icon in space for it, that'll make yoru ship turn towarsd the target and start accelerating. If you want to passively align you stop your ship once it's turned towards the target.
If you have trouble finding the target in space select it from your overview, that will highlight it on your screen and add names+info to it, if you then pan around you can find it more easily.

Aligning:
1. make sure you don't have any windows up against the edge of your screen. 2. select the relevant gate on the overview - this will put a square around the gate in space and add a caption. 3. look on the screen for the gate - it's most likely up against one of the screen edges. 4. manipulate the screen to put the highlighted gate in the centre 5. double click just above the highlighted gate. 6. Wait until aligned and reduce speed accordingly (try not to stop completely - this may result in you drifting off alignment).
With practice, you can do this very quickly.
Cheers Falka
