As the game gets bigger, more and more people join the player community, more devs get hired by CCP. The price of progress is losing touch between player community and CCP, things simply become less personal and more generic, "mainstream".
I have thought of a simple but somewhat radical (from mainstream pov) idea:
CCP can create a new job - "community interest group analyst".
Job description: Spend most of the time on official CCP forum and keep up with all the topics and trends. Gain understanding of the different interest groups that exist within the community, identify their agenda and rank their size and influence within the community. Create and manage a list of issues that players seem to be most concerned about. Identify groups that oppose and support those issues. On weekly basis, update other CCP developers with a summery of current trends and demands in the player base.
For the community: let the player community know how CCP understands the current issues. This will give players a chance to correct the list and clear out any major misunderstandings that may exist between CCP and most of community.
The job is likely to be highly controversial among the different player interest groups, accusations of favoritism and ignoring of issues are likely to be common place. Try to present the case in most neutral manner and assure the community that this is done to improve the relations and get better understanding of customer needs.

Who'd want CCP to have such a person? can you handle the inevitable accusations?

I would point out that since no one is 100% happy, CCP is doing a damn fine job on compromise to please as much of everyone as possible

You're assuming that forums are a representative sample of the playerbase and that the things people whinge about on here are the bigger priorities.
They might be or they might not be. It's a bit hard to gauge isn't it?
That "player council" idea I've heard mooted is probably a decent enough idea though provided they get a good cross section of players. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Personally, I'd rather CCP prohibit the people who deal with balancing the game from reading these forums, to be perfectly honest.

I could agree with that only under condition that people in charge of making balancing decision are active players in EVE, not just part time solo-players, but active participants in major alliances and wars.
That is basically what most people don't want CCP to do.
And if CCP is not fully immersed in the game, they cannot in good judgement make key balancing decisions.

I agree, but CCP has already publically said (back when the whole t20 thing came out) that its developers will allways play Eve.

SoftRevolution already said what I would say. I know 3 yo players (active ones, play every day and more than a couple of minutes) that never come to the forum, and are not few.
But I agree that some type of "more personal" (if that exist in a virtual world like this) contact would be nice... But there are some jobs out there, including a Director of CCP (Kieron - Director of Community Relations) that, IMHO, must be working on what you said right now.
The said "personal" contact would occur only in the Fanfest, and we lost that one, once more...

I got an idea for this too, people need to stop their complaining about every little thing. Stuff happens, life moves on. If you dont like the game after a change then you might want to think about moving on too.
Otherwise its an ok idea but kinda ......... shakey.
