EVE Voice has some really neat features, and the stuff described in this blog has the potential to make it a far superior service to Vent/TS based on tight integration with the fleet system alone.
However, like everyone's saying, until it has the ability to seamlessly continue to work in the event of an EVE crash or some other reason preventing you from logging on (login trap? Heh.) most people will continue to use alternatives.
Zulu et al, I don't know if a standalone client fits with your image of what you want EVE Voice to be, I like the idea of making it seem more "realistic", like it's actually voice comms between pods, but without standalone capability, it's just a neat toy.

I am stunned to see ppl actually use EV. Sure I played around with it for a bit but found it to be impossible to be functional ingame. I do not see the purpose of multiple channels etc in large fleet ops. I think the best improvement would be to simply remove EV completely, use the bandwith to reduce lag and fix the game first. Once there is no more lag in 300-300 fleetbattles we can think about EV. For now, and in the forseeable future I do not see TS/Vent being replaced in largescale ops. TS/Vent are simple, standalone and do all that is required. 'nuff said.

Quote: Now that Trinity has been released we've been monitoring the usage numbers of EVE Voice. We have to say that we're pleasantly surprised with the large number of players that have embraced this latest addition to EVE.
How do these player statistics break down? If you are counting those that right clicked a tab and activated it once, you will always have high usage as people want to try the features available to them. The real question is, how many are using it consistently.
As for additional features, you know what your player base wants...they have been asking for it since you announced it, a way to communicate even if Eve crashes. Either develop that aspect or shelf it because no one is going to take it seriously otherwise.

When in a fleet battle it is important to be able to communicate very quickly to different channels. Currently, a fleet commander only has the ability to speak to 1 channel at a time and to speak on another channel requires minimum of around 5 seconds to make the switch. I would love to be able to set a push to talk key per channel so that I can click only 1 button to give out orders to whoever I wish.
Otherwise with only a few minor issues that I have experienced, eve voice kicks butt!
Thanks CCP for all your hard work on this component and making it FREE!

Eve Voice needs
1. Ability to remove annoying warp sounds etc 2. Ability to work if eve crashes. People use teamspeak so if eve crashes, then they can at least work out if it is a node crash and not just 1 person. You cannot really do that in Eve-Voice

Well guys, I've gone through the thread and am going to address what I think are the hot topics:
Quote:
Multiple push-to-talk buttons for seperate channels
Good idea, it's going in the to-do pile :)
Quote:
Active speakers list
You can already see who's speaking and a history of speakers in the Fleet Broadcast window - under the Voice tab
Quote:
More keybind buttons/free input for keybind
We're still discussing which way to go, but we'll implement either more options or have an input field.
Quote:
Locational identifiers when people speak
You should get location identifiers for people speaking on EVE Voice if they're in your solar system (on the solar system map) but regarding world location if they aren't in your system I don't see that happening as it would likely put too much strain on the server, constantly querying peoples locations, for the benefit it gives.
Quote:
Audio notifications when you press and de-press the push-to-talk key
Good point, might look into that
Quote:
All client side mixing - volume controls on individual players etc
We're looking into this and it will hopefully be implemented in a future iteration of EVE Voice.
Quote:
G15/G5 support for active speaker
Not something we've talked about, but a possibility for future iterations.
Quote:
Muting people - channels
You can already moderate the fleet channel by muting everyone in it, and then excluding people like scouts and FC's from the mute.
Quote:
I won't use it because it lags EVE
EVE Voice has no effect on the EVE client itself when it comes to latency. The EVE Voice servers are not connected to Tranquility in any way (except when you log in you initialize against Tranquility) so they do not affect the client/server connection and communication. If your computer or network connection is pushed to the max just by running EVE and nothing else then using EVE Voice could (just like MSN, ICQ, mail programs and other voice communications software) be too much to handle, there isn't really much we can do about that.
Quote:
Stand alone client!
I know this is important to many of you so I'll say again what I said in the lecture on FanFest: A stand alone client is on our roadmap for EVE Voice. There is no particular timeframe for it and we haven't gone into any design work for it, but it's something we realize many people want and we of course want to give our players what they want :)

Drones still mess about shooting whatever they like whenever they like and you want to make EVE voice better?
Improving a function that eveyone already has (vent, TS) in the hope you can charge for it sucks when other things could be fixed with the resources used.
What you gonna do when the isk farming haulers sell their characters on the eve forums, start new accounts, and sell the isk they made on the net?
Still, I love the game and you did ask.

There are separate programming resources for EVE Voice and Drones. If you have an issue with drones please file a bugreport.

I have one single Issue for Eve-Voice:
Voice modulation. I have activated the feature way back, noticed that it's there, but will not plug in a Microphone to the system in anyway before I have voice modulation. I Role Play alot here, and if I need to carry throug with my real voice. I'd rather simply shut up, and use the keyboard. I did register with our Corp TS, and been thinking to swicth to Alliance Vent too, simply becouse I have a voice modulation program, but that simply doesn't work with Eve-online, as I can't figure where the sound input goes.
I'm not taking about fancy modulation, just a few Pitching and stuff like that, really nothing much, even think my M$ free sound recording device has this feature.... (pitch control). Of course more is better, but that's fragging basic. Give me, and I won't shut up, leave me and I'll never talk....
Still waiting for ingame voice, with voice mods. |

Quote:
1. Please fix the binding of the mouse buttons 3, 4, and 5 as talk keys. I have a Logitech M510 mouse and those don't work (and I've seen people with newer mouses also complain about this in the forums). TeamSpeak and other software have no issues recognizing those buttons, so should Eve.
Like realy, realy bad !! And while you'r at it cat you add an option to disable the bloody radial menu totaly :p

Don't you think it's insane that the thing that pretty much everyone in this thread wants, the thing that will make them actually use Eve Voice over teamspeak/vent, is the thing that has "no particular timeframe"?
imo ignore the rest of the functions you want to implement and add this first, then maybe people will actually use it for something like the inteneded (fleet) role you want it to fulfill. __________________

It isn't free.
It may not be separately billed but that just means it is included in the monthly subs.
In effect not enough people signed up for it as a payable extra - so now they are making everyone sign up for it without having any choice in the matter.

actually i know a lot of ppl with good computers that says their clients lag as soon as they try and use eve voice.
A friend of mine also encounterd a weird bug last night were there were some ppl in the channel he couldnt hear, and the only way to fix it was to reboot. but the bug seemed to come back from time to time with him.

thats good to hear. it bears repeating that eve voice will never be able to fully replace 3rd party comms clients until there is a stand-alone client; and as long as it cannot fully replace the 3rd party stuff its not worth bothering with it at all for the majority of players.

You could have the best computer on earth, but if the network connection between it and eve has issues, then it doesn't really matter.
I think that the most important thing that needs to be added is a dedicated channel for freighter captains, along with the appropriate lingo:
"10-4 good buddy, we have two bird-dogs and a baby bear two jumps out of Big J."

Im sitting here on the forums and eating as I type this, with headset on listening to Vent. Until I can do that with voice, I really dont care if an avatar pops up and smiles at me when someone talks, Im not going to use it.
Pretty much for the reasons said, and because alliances with hundreds of people already have setups that are stable, work through any kind of server loss, and give lots of options including overlay?
Voice has nothing on an external client until it works no matter the status of the game. Maybe not downtime, but anytime else, it should work.
Oh, and regardless of how different it is, Voice lagged my game; and I run a top tier laptop on a top tier connection. It affects something, and it is a critical point that keeps me using Vent.
With release of Client-side Ill take a look at it again.

It's disapointing that you're spending time and resources investigating and working on ANYTHING other than the stand alone client at this point, as far as eve-voice goes.
Its pretty obvious that, if you were to prioritise your development work as your customers would like, you would pack in any work on bells and whistles and bring the stand alone client out as soon as humanly possible.
After all, even if you fix all the bugs, add multi push to talk buttons and all the fancy rewind and replay stuff, its blatantly obvious most of the people who have expressed an interest in eve-voice in this thread wont be using it consistently until you get a stand alone client out.
So why waste time working on anything else?

exactly as above: working on code you don't know if you're going to (probably won't) keep is a waste of your (and our) time. If you're going to make a stand-alone client, start today. In any case, _you_ asked. If you don't like the answers...

i d love to hear teamates like fighters in battlestar galactica. I mean, some kind of noisy parasites and technologic voices when talking, for small ships for exemple.or get really noisy if you go really far from commander.
It should be awesome to hear noise when someone die.
Really easy to do with a voice modifier and can really be a way to immerge players during fights.

Main thing for me is that my Reaper mouse buttons arent recognized by Eve-Voice, Vent used them without issue.
Secondary issue is the lack of audio feedback - so you dont know when you press the button if you are broadcasting.

A bit off the wall, but perhaps an answer phone service for while you're offline.
"Hello this is Vyktor Abyss, I'm sorry I can't take your message right now I'm out of the area hunting the great white space whale...
Please leave your space whale blubber orders after the beep..."
And how about an option for a relatively quiet personally recordable identifier for when you're speaking in a fleet.
ie: Cov. ops player hits talk key "Intel - Vyk" (quietly) > "<Player's words>" - Everyone knows quickly who was talking without looking at last speaker.
Or: Cov. Ops player hits talk key "MOOON RIIVERR yadda yadda yadda" (quietly) "<player's words>" - everyone in fleet dies rolling about the floor with laughter as their ships get torn to shreds coz they can't get up off the floor.
Just some thoughts.
- Ideas are my business...maybe thats why I'm always skint! Please read my ideas |
