Consider me a convert. Our corp has been experimenting with EVE voice since trinity was released. We have NEVER considered this an option prior to now, but I have to say......I'm DAMN impressed. There was a bit of stuttering reported at times, but overall this is the cleanest smoothest and EASIEST system (as well as secure) that I've used.
Under linux, ALSA +ubuntu 7.10 is failing with onboard nforce4 sound....but OSS works perfectly (Bug report, with screen of error given + debug log sent to ccp already). Voice quality both outbound and inbound impressed the hell out of me, and the new fleet channel configuration is nothing short of THANK YOU CCP!
Crashing is still an issue as you are out of the voice channel....obviously, but our corp is set up with a TS backup server for that, so we are looking at this hard now as our main communication tool.
Just an fyi/report, and a thank you all rolled up in one.

This is good to hear that someone is managing to get EVE Voice working under Linux. I am having a little trouble, it seems to be related to my audio card rather than EVE, because I can't get input to work in native software such as Audacity.
I'm excited with this feature and hoping that I can get it to work, but first I have to get the microphone working full stop.

Hi
Please send us more bug reports on EVE Voice issues under Linux. We want to fix this and we need some help to pinpoint the problem.

Actually, I did bug report the alsa issue.
I'm not really sure how I would bug report more of this. Voice isn't crashing. (Well the client crashes a LOT, but that's a known deal with or without voice.)
Should I just run the debug tool WHILE using it? I HAVE noticed that sometimes joining multiple channels will lag the hell out of the client but this isn't a unique problem to the operating system, as it was corp mates on XP that were reporting the voice channel lagging before I got it. (They were closing EVE and restarting thinking that they were locked up. I had the same issue, but let the client sit, and after a full minute and a half, it unfroze and began working normally....while in that state, voice comms continued to work but were garbled and unintelligible.
The bad BAD BAD thing about eve voice is fleet ops. Any lag in the client produces lag for the voice tools, which means that it would be pretty useless for larger engagements.
As for eve voice under linux, if you have a working mic via oss, "oss" will show up as a choice for input in eve.) It "just worked" under oss. Alsa, otoh, errors as I mentioned in the OP.
This is not good though, as OSS is the one standard that I wish would go away. I'm going to try to run the client with alsa-oss wrapper, but if EVE has OSS, then the rest of the system will have no sound. ALSA is the 'choice' and the standard at the moment.
I may also try to load pulse audio as an alternative and test with it as well. (Heard some very good stuff about this audio solution.)

The weird thing is I get the reverse of the standard ALSA problem. Most people freeze on startup with ALSA, so they need to switch to OSS, I on the other hand find that EVE freezes on startup with OSS, and works with ALSA. I am okay with running EVE on OSS, as I don't run any programs in background while running EVE. If I could get it to run with OSS I could probably get Voice working.

See my post in the info portal to zulupark for more info on this
Zulupark blog feedback thread
For all of the cool 'bling', no standalone client is forcing our corp to abandon this as a noble experiment with nice sound and features but ultimately useless when stressed during combat and larger operations that cause UI lag/stutter/locking/crashing.
No voice outside of the client, especially in 0.0 operations can be fatal under many circumstances.
I'll keep testing for bug report purposes, but until there is a standalone eve tool for this, its a no go, at least for Meridian.
For small thing like a meeting of the board, or diplomatic stuff...its handy, but for critical ops? noway.

I would like to use this, but my problem at this point is that I use two different sound cards: one for sound effects on my speakers and another which is only connected to my headset. The eve config only really seems to have a way to pick one sound card and sound system. I tried adding a second one to the config file in my .cedega directory but that didn't work either. Does anyone know how to set this up?

I can hear in alsa. But I can't talk . When I use with plain wine. It gives a "bad"input sound but it gives something. With the wrapped client with alsa in "default" "default" I can hear ok but can't talk(but didn't kill my mind trying yet)

What type of soundcard do you have? I have a Intel High Definition Audio.
nightkhaos@voyager ~ $ sudo lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
CPU: Intel Core2 T5500 @ 1.66 RAM: 1024 GPU: nVidia GeForce Go 7300 GPU Drivers: 2.1.1 NVIDIA 100.14.19 Sound Card: HDA Intel Sound Card Driver: ALSA Version 1.0.14 Kernel: 2.6.23-gentoo-r3

Is the whole Windows API just not set up for multiple sound cards or am I the only one that uses 2 for 2 different things? Has anybody had any success doing this? Any ideas at all?

WOOT! I got it working! It turns out I need OSS enabled WITHOUT MMap to get Voice.

If OSS seems to be working perhaps it should be the standard setting. Even if it doesn't work for my SBLive! CT4670. Sound output works with ALSA and OSS so there would be no disadvantage?!

OSS is working fine here with dmap selected. ALSA is the odd one out on my rig, but you can LISTEN with it...just no voice. The input/output selections via alsa indicate dsnoop and dmix, AND you can see the microphone audio moving by speaking into the microphone in the escape menu, but it doesn't work in game or when using the testing feature in escape menu. It also usually reports no errors when clicking the troubleshooter.
I've already bug reported this, so we shall see.
