In my last dev blog, I mentioned the ISD program was undergoing changes and an increase in the size of the Community group. In recent e-mails and forum posts I have stated we are planning on a number of changes concerning the forums, both in rules and improvements, but have not been able to specify a deployment date.
At the end of tomorrow's (Thursday, 20 December) maintenance period for Tranquility, we will be deploying a number of forum improvements, a new Community Fansite page and changing our forum policies concerning warnings and bans.
The deployment of the changes also marks the last day of the volunteer forum moderation team, the Communications Relay Commission (CRC). In one form or another, they have been volunteering their time to ensure surfing the EVE forums are, for the most part, a fun and informative experience. EVE has grown tremendously under their watch and I feel they have played a role in that growth. Please join me in thanking them for their efforts.
Sorry I couldn't come up with a catchier title for the blog than Forum and Community Changes and Improvements.

Sorry to see the CRC go, thankyou for all your hard work.
One thing I would like to see addressed is the current use of stickies in various sections. Many stickied posts contain links to guides, tools, information, links, etc. Some of these threads were made by CRC members, and it is vital that these sticky threads be consistently updated or cleaned, so new players are not left with dead links and are stuck posting the same questions over and over (I know this will still happen, but when they do we can link them to the correct post instead of repeating ourselves). Please have the new community group go over all of these stickies and make sure they are updated. ------

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 19/12/2007 21:38:26 Regarding the new rules - especially if there's a player report feature coming, I'd like to know the team's stance on "clever" trolls/countertrolls.
For example, some threads may contain a viable topic or previously unknown information, but are created and worded for the express purpose of baiting a flamewar. These threads usually don't get locked, but there's a lot of bad blood flowing between the posters in there, and often some moderator will be "cleaning up" replies, yet not the more or less offending original post. How would you handle the case if a player reported such a topic? If you do consider it worth a warning, will you be actively looking out for such threads in the future? CAOD in particular could greatly benefit from this.
Also, sometimes people post pretty ridiculous things that make the average forum user slap their palm to their face and groan. Not because the poster is stupid, or because he's looking to bait flames, but just because of sheer laziness or prejudice towards a certain opinion. This will sometimes result in very sarcastic replies that are for all intents and purposes trolls and flames, but the average reader might feel that "they had it coming for miles". What if someone reported such a reply?
These are the finer details of forum behavior which cannot be clearly predicted by consulting the written rules, especially since the forum moderation goes case-by-case and thus shows little consistency.

First and foremost - why the bans are not linked to the game?
Right now everyone can 'burn' their forum privileges without any consequences. After those changes you will be able to burn for mere 6 months instead of indefinitely. It's not inviting, it's begging to be threadnaughted and as the effect of this everyone and everything of importance is already on SHC.
Since you have the unique advantage of linking forum accounts with actual players, why not use it further? For example, you could institute role based posting privileges, where people with certain role in game would be able show on forums as corporation spokesman. You could ease moderation burdens by giving corp directors option to edit posts and limit posting privileges on certain forums (read: CAOD). There is a lot fo potential here.
Alternatively, are you planning to embrace community hosting forums like Arena.Net (of Guild Wars fame) did? I'm talking about dev posts and maybe mini devblogs on those forums. They already handle moderation way better than than CRC ever did and you don't have to pay them a dime.

I would consider removing that "No posting if you're in an NPC corp" rule from CAOD, since all it does is make alt posters make 1-man gimmick corps for their alts and people who leave player corps temporarily get their posts moderated, even if they're only between corps momentarily. The rule really doesn't do much.
Other than that, there wasn't a single thing in that dev blog that I didn't like. Nice work. |

Quote: The Role Play and Corporation forums will see a relaxing of the enforcement of minor flaming, but a post with contents of a harmful, racial or inflammatory nature will not be tolerated.
Am I reading that incorrectly, or are you reducing the level of moderation on CAOD? That place is is an intolerable mess, a joke, and a pit of dreck (and actually stronger words would be appropriate, but banned). It desperately needs to be better moderated, doing everything from scrubbing 1-man alt corp posts to cutting out threadnaughts and off-topic spam posts before they gain momentum.

Yeah I view these changes as too little way too late.
CRC inept at best performance and lack of ability has allowed CCP forums to rot. All the good information and discussions aren't even on CCP controlled forums at this point. I don't fore see with people being told in their alliances to go to other forums CCP even being able to get back in control of the EVE community. Most links I see these day's are posted on non CCP forums. Where news and info is a lot more accurate without the propaganda Goon racist noise. Noise that has gone on for far longer then most respectable companies would tolerate.

Does this mean that notable posters, such as Jade Constantine, will be able to return to the e-o forums?
My scroll wheel might not thank you but the forums would be a better place especially if Halseth Durn could be tempted back to put a few under a Jade post again.

CRC, you will be missed!
@Community team: How about an introduction of you guys and lads? Who and how many are you? It seems like CCP Saint is one of them, but is she the only one?
How about enforcing real strict rules in CAOD? The signal to noise ratio is still quite bad.
Will members of the community team be marked in another way than "real" devs? I really wonŠt like to check hundreds of posts with a golden bar because a mod wrote something.

Racial slur banning is all fine, no problems there.
Regarding IC forums (not that I necessarily use 'em much) but I take it, that in character racism and inflammation remain all fine and dandy?

I have edited the blog to clarify the section in question. Yes, CAOD will see heavier moderation, the RP forums will see a relaxation as long as post content is kept in character and directly related to EVE. Updated text below:
Quote: The Role Play and Corporation Corporations and Alliances Summit and Intergalactic Summit Role Play forums will see a relaxing of the enforcement of minor flaming as long as post content is in character, but a post with contents of a harmful, racial or inflammatory nature will not be tolerated.

I'm really looking forward to more codified rules, and to a more even-handed application of them.
"Trolling" is listed as being against the rules, but exactly what constitutes trolling has varied wildly according to the whims of whatever moderator happened to be dealing with it--and according to some people, whatever that moderator's in-game politics were.
As an example for how wildly the punishments varied, banning Captaingordon from the game was utterly unexpected and is not, so far as I can determine, a listed penalty under the forum rules. It was also unprecedented, as (quite a few) other people have committed very similar offenses and only had their forum privileges removed --no in-game consequences. Maybe he was being made an example of, whatever.
I dunno, it will just be nice to feel less at the whim of anonymous and possibly partisan volunteers, I'm really optimistic about the changes discussed in this blog.
