I spent the past 4-5 hours doing nothing. A good two hours was spent organizing everything, scouting, and getting the fleet all set up. That was fine. Then we headed out, it was fine. Spent a amount of time at each gate before jumping. Then at one point the squads split and I felt it all went down hill. My squad stayed behind, and we ended up almost right back where we started, and a couple of times we'd orbit a gate, go through it, and go back through it.
I still had school work left, and was getting tired, and just left at this point.

Sometimes yes you won't find any war targets. Depends really on how many of them are there and how many of you and what's their prime time zone and what's your time zone.
If you see that your gang isn't finding anything and getting nowhere then just leave. Not all runs are successful. In ideal when both parties are willing to fight and have same time zone and equal numbers they will get into a lot encounters leading to fights. But this doesn't always happen, so just treat these runs as practice.

Most of the time nothing happens but when it does you know about it.
You just got a couple of hours tuition on fleet composition and manouvering without having to put your ship a risk so it's not all bad.
This is exactly the kind of stuff I applied to join Eve Unibersity for untill the Wardec got in the way

Wardecs are fun, at least when you're in a corp that knows what it's doing and is helping you to get to grips with it. I understand it's a big hurdle to take but as with most things in EVE, you're best off experiencing/learning it sooner rather than later.
NOT joining EVE-Uni (or any other corp setup to actually help newer players) is potentially the dumbest decision you can make. Regardless of a wardec.
