IĈve just had my first ship loss trying to complete the Worlds Collide mission. This came as a bit of a shock as the quests leading up to it were easy to the point of dull. As soon as I warped through the second gate I was in the thick of the action and by the time I realised I was in trouble my ship was beyond saving or warping out of there.
Ok so I need to up-skill and up-equip before attempting it again. Are there any other level 1 missions to watch out for which are similarly tricky? I donĈt mind taking a few risks, but IĈd prefer to avoid any more close combat until IĈm ready for it.

Worlds Collide is special, its widely known as the hardest lvl 1 mission to do when your starting out, best bet is to get a friend, and the two of you in destroyers do it together or something.

Fit an afterburner and you should be fine. You miss all the good loot though...

Edited by: Vivian Porter on 21/12/2007 13:03:37 The most important piece of equipment you have for a mission like this - is your afterburner. Get a Cold Gas Arc Jet. It's the best.
Have your Navigation skills buffed.
Maybe install a injector.
Use long range weapons, run away from the rats and kill them as they try to close with you.
Rats use mostly short range weapons. Equipping Rail guns I've completed this mission with barely getting my shields dented.
I intentionally didn't complete the mission, though I stored the completion object away in the nearest base, until I'd flown around and destroyed all the rats for both sides - then salvaged all their wrecks.
If you use the right tactics these missions are easy ... they just take a long time to complete if you want to salvage all their wrecks.
Only aggro one group at at time. Pick out a group. Get at an angle to them so that you are as distant as you can be from the other groups. Then approach your target group of rats. Once they start targeting you, turn away from them - but not towards another group, off into space somewhere. Let these rats follow you until you kill them all. Turn your afterburner on and off to control the distance they are from you. Let them close a little, shoot them up and if to many start getting in range, turn the after burner back on and increase it.
It helps to have a level III Frigate for this as they'll be tougher for the rats to hurt - but make sure you've got a good afterburner and you should be able to run away from any of the rats.
Before you take on the next bunch of rats ... wait until your shield and armor are back at full strength if they've dropped.
Yeah. If you've got a buddy and you've both got destroyers - this will all go a lot faster. Carry 4 salvagers and you can clean up pretty fast. Make darn sure you're navigation is up to snuff with destroyers though as they aren't normally as fast as frigates and if you put some armor on them it can slow them down. That's where that injector comes in handy. It will take up some of your cargo space though.
Whatever you are doing, just watch your speed. If it looks like the rats are outrunning you - instead of you outrunning them - warp out and fit a faster ship one way or the other.

Reading and understanding the mission requirements and details up to the last click to warp are very important.
"Gates are not locked" (e.g. Worlds Collide) = Don't shoot unless you have to reduce damage. Encounter not a deadspace (e.g. Blockade) = You can bookmark and re-warp Investigate (e.g. Recon) = Fly to it as fast as possible, then get out Blow up this thing (e.g. Break their will) = Blow up that thing then go home
For shield tankers, if you cannot regenerate fast enough to stay above 20%, you should warp out asap. The armor is for absorbing the damage during warp aligning, not for staying.
Also, this link is helpful.
----- Tip #243: There is a 30 seconds cool-off timer between most state changes (dock/undock/jump/explode/die/change ship/etc.) known as "Session change". |

1) Do it in a Destroyer (they count as frigate-class ships) 2) Don't shoot all of the ships at the 2nd "room", otherwise a load more will spawn and they fire missiles which hurt like hell
The 3rd room (where you actually have to recover the stuff from the damaged ship) is pretty much like a regular Level 1 mission.
