Two nights ago, I had a power failure. When I got power back and logged back in, all my settings were gone yet again. I had to position windows, reset overview settings, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseam. Also, after a patch, whether or not settings are saved (and which ones) is just a crap shoot.
Could we PLEASE have a "Save settings as..." function so all this can be saved in a file and backed up? Or save the settings on the server? Or some kind of setting to point to an EVEHOME directory for saving everything in one place? A place that's NOT in three different locations, two of which are in the stupid M$ Windows hierarchy? Something? Anything?
EVE is the coolest fscking game around, but the UI makes me want a gun, a glass of whisky and one bullet.

I agree, it'd be cool to export settings as an XML file or something. __________

What settings would you like to able to export and import (it would be more of an export since some are saved client-side while others are stored server-side).
Overview settings? Open windows, size and position? Ship fittings? Other?

All the client side stuff.
Folders in peeps and places, overview settings, window positions, drone groups (if that's client side) - all of it
If nothing else an easy thing might be to just make a backup of the client side data set on successful shutdowns, since it is just a directory and some files. Although XML or simialr would be nice so corps could share overview settings and what not for wars and such and we could import/export them.

I would really like that when I open my client my local chat window isn't nested back with all my other chat windows and it maintains its position above those windows by itself

hey hey
All my settings have been saving perfectly for a while now but today I switched to premium (to see the hyena) and now they vanished :(
Ive had premium installed already and only flicked over to specifically see the new gal colours and the hyena. No idea why they suddenly vanished

But what about server-side settings, such as ship fittings, which would allow you to re-fit a ship by importing an XML file? You could also more easily brag about your setup by posting the XML file.

overview settings and pre-sets are the most important.
Right behind that is window positions

Yes please!
Kind of something that takes modules from cargo if in space and place it on the ship, or from hangar if docked
Other from that, import/export overview settings and window-positions would be lovely.
And another thing, is it broken or are the option to have diffrent settings (window size, graphic settings) for diffrent users (same install) totally removed? Or is there any paramters that i can feed my desktop shortcut with to start with diffrent size?

This is actually a very good thing...
The most annoying issue after many many patches is the resetting of window positions to default. I have no idea why but it happens too often to me and other corp members.
So here is my prioritized list of "Export/Import settings to/from file...":
1. Window positions 2. Overview settings 3. Bookmark folders 4. Drone groups 5. Color theme (multiple themes storable in one file where you can select one) 6. General settings from the main menu 7. NavCom settings
Put these into *.xml files into a custom directory, so we could theoretically edit them without having EVE running (just in theory). Especially 1.-3. are a pain after being killed by a patch or whatever.
When importing overview settings, it would be great to get a dialog where you can un/check which of the saved presets to load or not.

Is this possible now, ie, manually? I'd think this would change game mechanics, rather than UI.

Edited by: Helison on 23/12/2007 00:35:15 What we really need is a Eve-tool (like the one for Linux setup), but a bit more expanded and polished. For some stuff there might be third-party tools available, but a tool written by CCP would be great.
Needed/wanted functions (sorted by priority): 1) Backup ALL client-side settings for the case of crash to a user-defined directory (with the option of doing this automatically each time the tool is started) 2) Delete cache and reset all settings to default 3) Compress and Purge (delete) your logfiles (combat logs and chatlogs) 4) Test system for possible problems with Eve (weak hardware, network problems, too old drivers) 5) Manage different settings for different accounts
Saving serverside-settings is in my eyes not as necessary - as they should be safe anyway. But it might be interesting to safe your mails and notes to harddisk. But I think that the mail-system needs a rework anyway.

Yes, by the use of capitals (not dread) or ship maint bays at poses. Yeah, i didnt propose a change to the game, rather an option to use xml-fitting both in stations and on the field.

Woo hoo! Dev action! Quote: What settings would you like to able to export and import?
Short answer? All of them. B-) But I definitely agree with those who have made the overview settings priority number one. A bad overview could get you killed, and the overview is also the biggest pain in the neck to re-configure. In rough order of priority from most wanted to least wanted, with much cribbing from others' posts:
- overview settings
- ESC config menu settings... definitely!!!
- market quickbar
- window position, color, transparency...
- ... including tab position left-to-right in stacked windows
- folders in buddies, bookmarks, drones, etc...
- ... and keep folder open/closed status through login, logout, jump, dock, etc
- ship fitting macros -- some way to save and reload configs quickly
- "a dialog where you can un/check which of the saved presets to load or not"
My pet theory is that you've put off discussion of UI changes until post-Trinity, which makes sense. If you guys are considering this sort of change now, then I've been griping and moaning -- er, constructively suggesting lots of UI upgrades for a while now. :-)

Edited by: Ri****ulo on 23/12/2007 01:55:04 This looks like: 101 (not really) things i hate about client side saved settings.
Definitely overview settings but most of all container configurations. Every time i lose my settings i have to reconfigure LOADS of containers not to lock items on drop. In fact, i can't see why containers cannot save their own status! Take the following example:
Giant secure log container on corporation hangar used for general loot drop. Everyone drops loot in it and although it is a global container, everyone must save their own setting rules which is recorded client-side. These containers should REALLY have a flag for their settings...
About overview settings, lets just say that i have given up saving settings as I'll probably have to do it again in a week.
BTW, *hint* *hint* These saved settings should include column configuration as well as orbit and keep distance values. My overview column/orbit/keep distance setting values are different for mission running, pvp or mining.
The rest is a nag but not really that annoying. |

this worked with the old client, but not with the new one

Kind of in this same idea, could you make it so we can import and export autopilot lists? I would like to make an external tool with a markable star/solarsystem map. Then I can make autopilot lists that bypass systems or take different routes without other people getting lost. It doesn't need to be able to create new BMs or anything. But the ability to send existing BMs between players would be nice.

I'm going to bet you get lots of answer for priorities, I'll have to give it some thought my self when there is not a bottle of beer on the desk. However à
What I suggest is, you guys start with something client side that is easily quantified like window positions. That way players can play with it and find the bugs in your parser before you allow players to start uploading god knows what to the server. I'm not trying to say your implementation will have bugs so much as all software has a bug somewhere; it's better to find them on the client than the server. I'd suggest XML as the out of the box ADO parsers from MS, as you've an MS backend, have built in buffer over run detection. I am pretty sure you do not want to suffer from the implications of such things on the first go. Additionally, there may be server side settings you do not want us players to know about that should be considered, so if you do server side exports, you will need to possibly do a transform at some layer prior to allow playing to see the export it self so that we do not get curious about interesting looking fields.
So, start with simple stuff first, get it working properly then let us mess about with more complicated data sets like the overview and then move on to server side stuff once it is safe and the implications are well understood.

Client Stuff: - all options from ESC-Menue - all window attributes including position/colors and special options (overview settings) - all local folders (bookmark folders; buddies; drones...)
data must be seperated for: - multiple accounts with multiple client version - locations not coupled to windows directory structure!
More API-Functions: - acces to assets (including corp; including container) ==> 1x per day or week - it is not time critical; maybe we could charge for it?

Actually you can.
You just need 2 installations and 3 shortcuts. For different settings for 2 chacaters, 1 installation and 2 shortcuts is enough.
One shortcut has no /end /LUA:off
One does.
Fire up one for one character, fire up the other for the other. Its not like you dont have to restart anyway.

Well the ability to export ingame toggle flags that you only hit first time. Situation is I do clean install and then have to acknowledge loads of pop-up's which I'm prevented in setting until I encounter. One example would be I'm in say 0.0 and jump into low-sec for the first time and get the pop-up saying along the lines that "ew you know this is dangerous space, you realy sure you want to do that". Along with many other less annoying ones.
A general export (XML always nice and safe and portable across platforms ;) of setting you can change ingame would be nice. Grouping into so groups like ACTION, ENVIROMENT and CUSTOMISATIONS would cover the main ones nicely.
ACTION - pop-up's and any settings that are effected by play interaction.
ENVIROMENT - My game settings (ones in esc menu)
CUSTOMISATIONS - windows size/settings, bookmark folders and anything that you can tweak at your will.
Also the ability to export/save overview settings would be darn handy - I'd like to be able to broadcast them to gang groups so can force people focusing on support to only see support. Also alows trading of such exports for the lazy ;0.
Also need to be able to import and in that respect were talking client side. Server side settings dont change when we reinstall and generaly all set how we like them. Its the client-side aspects that bite.
How many of you had the overview overlap bug (usualy when ganged and docked and you have drones - not had in while but..) were you couldn't get your overview back and had to trash all your settings to get any form of sanity,
As a whole the export and import of client-side settings is something that would be not only benificial to the players/customers but for CCP as alot of people would do fresh installs more often and be more assured there client is robust instead of having some bad cache item in system X they will hit one day.
But I would advise on a XML format as there are parses available and also nice logical format to take across platforms.

Ship fittings as in a form of re-buy previous option in counter-strike whilst would be nice and darn handy on the test server, would have a negative impact upon the actual gameplay as would offer more tactical advantage to the people who lose ships and as such slightly nerf those that didn't lose a ship in a fight.
I'd like it but looking at the whole picture I'd say it would be bad - and I fight in Jita ;0.

Please Please Please introduce this. I work part time in an internet cafe, Im a student, and have the worlds worst internet at home. So I play eve from work, very good connections machines etc. But everytime I log on I have to set all of my settings. Drone groupings is the worst. Ever have to sort our a few hundread drones in a carrier every day anyone? It would be fantastic if we could just have a file in the eve folder that I could put on a usb stick, I would pay Ç20 a month for eve, honestly I would :P
Merry xmas ccp, this is what i want from santa.
