I have only been playing this game for about a month and a half when it hit me the other day that a class of ship is missing from this game. The class that I am refering to is the Destroyer class ship. This class is between a frigate and a cruiser and it strikes me that having destroyers in the game would help out alot. I mean you go from a top of the line frigate costing about 120 - 300k (Variouse prices for Tristans that I have seen) to a cruiser, which even the lowest level cruiser will set you back 3mil easy. It just seems to me thats a big jump. I was just wondering if anyone else had thought of this or if it had been talked about before?

I recall reading a topic once where someone said that the current ship classes are a bit off and that instead of: Frigate Cruiser Battleship Titan
Its really more like: Patrol Boat Destroyer Escort (battle)Cruiser Battleship
Makes a bit more sense to me, especially when you realize that frigates have one pilot and are historically (Game fiction) just a step above fighters. (and drones are just a step below fighters)

I think that ship classes are slightly off also.
Shoud be more like: Frigate = Fighter Cruiser = Frigate Battleship = Cruiser Titan = Battleship

Wrongo....
Drones = Fighters
The Destroyer class is on the drawing board as we speak... as are elite ships that include new ship classes like point defence and bombers....
Should be cool! -------------------------------------------

As it stands now drones = drones and Frigates = fighters. Think about how a frigate "in-game" performs, the speed, agility, the insane lock times.....they look like fighters, they perform like fighters, they are fighters.
Drones by definition are un-manned vehicles. That's all. A battleship size ship can be a drone if it was fully automated and unmanned.
I equate the drones "in game" to those drones of today's forces like the hunter and predator of the US air force.

According to game fiction, frigates are frigates.
They used to require a crew before pods, rather then a single pilot like the fighters.
Drones are equivalent to fighters in game fiction, since the advancement of drone technology made fighters obsolete.
Besides, fighters should beable to hold small ships (drones) inside them, yet alot of frigs can.
I dont know where you guys get the idea that the ships are anything other then what they are. They are just what they are. _______________________________________________

Specialty (Elite) Classes: Frigate: Interceptor Escort Bomber Gunship Covert Ops
Elite cruiser and battleship classes TBA.
Only interceptors have been finalized and released, so expect some of the other elite classes to change names. ********** Everyone deserves to die. You go first.

According to the Website (cant rember where exactly) some ships are multicrew, but most are single pilot ships
Probe for example has 2 crew iirc

Missing ship class, also are Miningships, that you dont have to use Harvester BS then. I like seeing also some Miningplattforms that only can hold appx. 10 Miners with the given skill 90% less CPU usage for Mininglasers. Very slow and a big Cargo to hold lots of ore.

I still don't think you will see much more then a bunch of people waiting to get into elite battleships.
With the problems that cruisers currently face, I doubt even an elite one will fix those.
Until those problems are addressed, rest asured most people currently in battleships will probably only wait to get into a new elite battleship.
The problems are still the same, elite, normal, or otherwise.

The real problem is that you dont get any sense of scale looking at your ship... There should be a distance meter for your camera drone so you can see how far away you are from your controlling ship. That way you can estimate the true size of your ship. -------------------------------------------

Well, read the game fiction if you don't believe the pod stuff.
Windows are not necessarily for a crew. If they are indeed windows, then they could be for the passengers these starships occasionally carry. If they're not actually windows, which is possible, they could be docking points, airlocks or something of that sort.

I always thought it as this way. The windows are the interfaces of the stations that were once crewed. As for ship classes go I just look at drones as fighters. Makes sense that way.

I agree with the original post about the ''Destroyer'' class but I think the best point is perhaps being missed. The Destroyer (having started life as a Torpedo-Boat, then Torpedo-Boat Destroyer, and then just plain Destroyer) was designed and built for just one reason ... to threaten Battleships. They were designed to be very fast and their primary weapon (as regards the Battleship at least) was Torpedoes. The concept was that if a group of Destroyers attacked a Battleship they would dart in at high speed to launch their torps at close range, their small size, speed and manuverability being their main advantage. Losses would probably exceed 50% but if just one Destroyer got into range to fire its Torpedoes then the Battleship was pretty much history. The end result - shown repeatedly through both World wars - was that faced with concerted attacks by groups of Destroyers the Battleships would always be forced to turn and run.
I believe that what we need is a class of ship that has the ability to close a Battleship at high speed and, if it gets to close range, has the ability to deliver a killer blow. Okay, one-on-one the Battleship would have no major problem, but faced with 3-4 or more of these ships they would have to face the real possibility of losing their ship unless they ran.
At the moment this is not possible on several levels. Firstly, the most powerful missile weapon in the game, the torpedo, does only 450dmg. You would need 10 of them just to take down the shields on Tempest and another 10 to kill the armour. Secondly, the only ships with the speed potential to dart in close, the Frigates, can''t use Torpedoes anyway. Thirdly, with no ''to-hit'' modifier for weapons based on target size the Battleship has no disadvantage in using massive weapons to fire at a tiny opponent. That means there is almost no chance of getting in close anyway.
What we need is a class of weapon that can deliver a massive damage - enough indeed that a handful of these weapons could take out a BS - but which would need to be fired from very short range - say 5km. We then need a class of fast ship capable of swarming on the Battleship in numbers in an attempt to deliver that weapon. Perhaps the new bomber is intended to be that ship, but what of the weapon? The Battleship was eventually obsoleted by the combinations of Cruisers and Destroyers working together. I see no reason why Battleships should be all powerful here?
