Buying a char is unfair but having to wait possibly years for the SP for the ships you wanna fly isnt?
Pfft ignore that kinda attitude and just be thankful that what stupid people on the forums say dosent make a difference anyway

Originally by: Mara Mrtyu In eve, to play as well as the character I bought, I'd have to wait TWO years. This is immutable, no matter how well I understand tactics or game mechanics. No matter how well I learn them, I'd have to wait. I'm not that patient.
Says it all.
I don't mind character trades much, as others have pointed out, the harsh nature of the game tends to, eh, even things out rapidly. Not to mention that it has huge potential for lulz. Does say something about the player though, when they want to evade such a fundamental aspect of the game. -

My recommendation:
Start off with your own character - and train your character until you have some minimum level of understanding the game. And more than just a minimum level of understanding "the game", you need to understand the play style that you're trying to "inherit".
Then you need to understand that the game changes drastically for each style of ship. For example, flying a Vagabond is nothing at all like flying a Raven - they're very much playing a "different game".
Thus, when you buy a character (and ship!) such as a carrier without the basics of understanding how the game is played, and why various things are silly to do - you're just wasting ISK (and money).
In the end, the only thing that is really lasting in this game is your reputation and skillpoints (and you can lose your skillpoints if you're not careful!).
Now, since you've already gone ahead and bought this character (and lost your first carrier!), I'm going to recommend going "down" on the food chain a bit. Stop flying capitals until you *really* understand them.
Fly a cruiser for a little while... go shooty shooty in lowsec. Lose a ship... or a pod! Kill a few things too!
Then fly a battlecruiser a few times too... and then a battleship or a HAC. Fly a battleship for a while before even looking to a carrier again. ;-)

Thank you for your advice.

I helped kill a carrier, not lose one. (The character I bought doesn't have capital skills. I'm not getting into one until I'm ready. )

I lost a few vexors off Old Man Star. I've been flying a myrm for a while now in my own character.
In the new character, I've been flying a covops ship for probing down targets and getting warp-in point just within scrambling range, my old character's myrm for tackling them, then my new character's raven for killing them.
My new character can also fly interceptors and AF, and I've really wanted to understand the tactics of taking on a battleship with frigs, but those frigs are not as handy in front of the sentries, with their perfect tracking. I've been doing mostly battlecruisers and bigger, as they tank the sentries rather well.
My hope is to get into a blaster hyperion pretty soon, but I need to make more ISK before I do. For the moment, it's a torp raven for me.
I really am trying to do this rationally. I just like being in over my head. I prefer playing a game where there is so much to learn about so many ships. I like jumping into the deep end without swimming lessons.
I like having to learn and adapt quickly. With a character that doesn't limit me by making me wait weeks or months for each new tactical option, It's easier to feel like I'm forced to learn fast.

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 24/12/2007 19:58:32 OP, your mistake is in caring.
It's a MMORPG. If you need social validation here of all places then you have real self esteem issues. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

First advice, is to lose the address for the forums. You'll save yourself a lot of stress and heartache. You really shouldn't care what any of us self-righteous hypocritical bastards think.
My first reaction is to say "Bringing real life money into an MMO gives you an unfair advantage, and is lame." Then I realize this is EVE. Then I also realize that I pay for three accounts, which gives me an unfair advantage and is lame. Then I realize that most of the people who complain about it would do it in a heartbeat if they had the means themselves.
So long as you buy your characters and isk from a legitimate source, it is no one's business but your own.

Originally by: Stakhanov I think you would be a fine gangmate to fly with , on Singularity.
No matter the prowess you display , I would be hard pressed to even acknowledge your existence on Tranquility.
While I think that character trade goes against the spirit of the game , ISK can be deserved in many ways. If you had scammed billions to buy that capital pilot , you could still earn my respect. But those who bought their way (legally or not) into the game have my everlasting contempt , wether or not they have the skills to use their expensive toys.
why? because they have to play exactly how you play and enjoy frigates? Trashed sig, Shark was here |
