how does this overloading module thing work, exactly?
for example, a heavy missile launcher tech 2 has a 15% RoF if overloaded, but it does 1.8hp damage. but how much hp total does it have? how long will the overload feature run for?

Stats generally aren't very informative for heat , try it yourself (on sisi if you're really greedy) Mods like webs and scrams are damaged very fast , so overload is only good for a first tackle. Heat damage spreads to the slot rack also (overloading MWD for too long will fry web , scram , injector - not good)
Overloading guns would be very situational - mods do take damage when you're low on structure , too. It's best used when lending backup to a teammate that might die before his opponent.
Overloading tank is only useful when you can't tank incoming damage , obviously.

yeah but you CAN check module hp.
you have to go to repair station and it shos moduels hp there.
why isn't this easier?

I find overloading very handy to both get the first tackle (overloading your mids to grab someone you would've missed otherwise) and when you're in one of those hard fights where you play the 'lets see whos structure lasts longer' game, overloading the guns and reps can make a world of difference.
That said, the only real way to asses how much you can overload for is by trying it a lot, since the numbers are not very informative.
