Me and a friend are looking to try some pvp in low sec and we've been testing different combinations of cruisers (can't afford to lose 100m a day unfortunately :|) and I would like to hear suggestions for a gang with 2-3 people... I hear thorax is good for pvp? Combine with ewar? interceptors? Just now we're using cruisers but anything upto the price class of BC should be affordable. Cheers

T1 cruisers have the huge drawback that they can't really engage a target around a gate or station because the sentries will really hurt you bad if you're not tanked well.
I'd use a HAC or BS or only engage stuff at belts or 150km off the gate.
Maybe you could also try a BC... a myrm can tank the sentries for a little while (should be enough to take out most single targets with a few buddies before you gotta warp out).

If you're talking about killing targets at the gate, then listen to this guy. If you're more interested in belt PvP...
Hands down you'll need a tackler. If you have enough cash, have your best tackler fly an interceptor, the tackling variant. (NOT the "damage" variant)
When I tackling, I always fit an MWD, disruptor, sensor boosters (for near insta-lock on pods and shuttles - can make the difference between somebody warping out in time as well if you have to approach) and speed mods. With the leftover PG, a longer range gun or two in highs to scratch a little paint and kill pods.
The other two ships should probably be the best damage types you can get. Personally I'd like the other two in up close and personal tank and gank battlecruiser/cruiser (Thorax, Rupture, Hurricane, etc) with webs and MWDs who warp to zero on the tackler after you have them pinned down, double web the target, and proceed to pop.

Lazy man setup for low sec gatecamping is Drakes or Nighthawks with some passive tank, sensor booster, 24km scram and a couple BCU. Need alot of you to truely pwn everything that comes through, however.
Roaming around lowsec, usually battlecruisers and commandships again are good. Battleships usually are too slow and get caught if a bigger fish comes.

Depends on what race you're going.
Gallente: Rax or Vexor Minmatar: Rupture or Stabber Amarr: Train something else. Caldari: BB or Caracal (but ideally supporting one of the above).
If you can splash for a BC, then ... well, basically all the tier 2s are pretty nice. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 31/12/2007 16:20:18 If you want to roam around and belt hunt the best you can do are a couple of cruisers (plate+gank if possible) - Thorax and Rupture do this very well and a interceptor would be nice. Of course, gatecamping is not going to happen, but you will still be able to fight at gates when you see someone flashing red (someone with -5.0 or worse sec status) or if people attack you first.
I think the last five kills in my Rifter were all at gates, in fact
BCs you have to be more careful with; they're much slower and less agile then cruisers and you won't be able to fight at gates for very long in one (unless you're using a Drake, which will certainly die in the first gatecamp anyway).
Edit: if you have four people, make one of them fly a blackbird. You won't regret it.

Choose any cruisers you want. Personally you're going to need one with a MWD, scrambler, and webifier. Thorax should work good for that. Omen works as well. Stabber or Rupture too. Pretty much any cruiser can do it but avoid the Augoror, Exequror, and Scythe. Only use those if you really need to bait someone. Since you're in T1 cruisers you shouldn't have much trouble "baiting" or making people feel comfortable anyways =P
I would personally have a scrambler on every ship in the gang if you're limiting yourself to cruisers. Maybe a 2nd webifier somewhere. You should be able to engage a majority of ships barring GOOD battleship pilots and GOOD battlecruiser pilots. I engaged a myrmidon in my omen and killed him (someone stole the kill mail when he was at 5% structure) so don't be afraid to engage a pilot if he is in a big ship. Just click show-info on everyone in local and take note of their age and employment history.
This also works a lot better if all 3 of you are in *different* corporations as people will be less afraid of you. Avoid ships you know to be by default "dps monsters" in comparison to your ships.
If you use an interceptor prepare for it to be useless if you engage a larger target. If you use a blackbird as support be prepared to make many people angry in the area =P
If you are planning on roaming I would say use standard scout practices. If you are camping a system that you want to live in setup safespots where you can reach all the belts or a majority with 1 scan on 360 max range. You should setup safespots in any systems you want to do this from too. But that's if you're planning on living somewhere =P ---

Thanks for replys.. on another note though: you're talking about roaming belts in low sec, but I very rarely come across miners or even ratters in low sec belts. Ive even used cov ops to scan the systems and there are most pos's. Am I doing something wrong? lol

People rat in 0.2 - 0.1 (even in 0.4 - 0.3 but not as good of players). Also pick systems with complexes in them and you should be good to go.
Otherwise you will need a ship that can tank sentry guns to get kills. ---

broadsword, huginn, rook.
is a pretty nasty little gang.
however I am guessing that is gonna be out of your skill/price range so go with the t1 versions, blackbird, Hyena(tech 2 but cheaper then bc and easy to train for), hurricane. the idea being use heavy tackle and ecm and kill things

i prefer frig gangs, 2-3 af`s with a few noobs in their best races t1 frigs as extra dps.
usually one of em might wanna bring his cruiser or bc which is good for extra dps but im happy in just frigs.
i dont bother with gate killing unless a flashy red shows up
just have a decent scanner user in a reasonable tacklin setup jump through ahead and hopefully he can find, tackle, and hold out till the gang gets there.
intys are good in this respect but they shout `im a tackler` even louder than frigs do.
thats how i do it anyway
